The one game that really done it for me was Werewolves Within on VR.
You're playing a mafia style "hidden role" game with 7 other people. And it's AMAZING. Playerbase is down so I haven't played in a long time but it ups the comfort levels in those kind of things

If you don't have sufficient PvE content, but multi, you want players to run into each other, so you need to scale back the map enough to ensure frequent engagements to make the world more...Well, more lively. If the map is smaller, you may also reduce blockading to some degree, particularly since you can better know the blockade points and set up some NPC encampments to push them away.
However, with a larger map and a low number of players, you need more AI activity to stir things up, I feel. This in turn can also serve to reduce blockading, as other AI pirates would serve to disrupt the blockades.

RuneScape is unique in the manner that you can pay for anything and everything via ingame play. Earn gold ingame, and buy an item called a 'Bond' on the Grand Exchange. The Bond can be used to purchase anything; from membership, to plane tickets and a Hotel room for the Irl RuneFest in Cambridge, England.
Idk of any other game that does that.
I know EVE and WoW let you buy membership ingame, but not Irl stuff or mtx stuff.

I tried it out today, didn‘t have much time sadly. I only finished the tutorial and then I had to leave. It plays nice, the combat is awful but I expected that after what you said @teal trench I really liked some of the other stuff though, I‘ll try to play it some more the next couple of days
Although I don‘t really like that a lot of skill stuff and map parts are apparently restricted behind membership

And yeah, the combat is awful. The tick system makes it even worse, so that's why I stick with the 'replica' of the original combat system, called Legacy.

Sure, there are lots of grindy things, but there's also lots of semi-afk stuff.

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking Rs1, Rs2, and Rs3 are different games. It's an understandable mistake, too lol. In reality, the number is just a number - the game is still exactly the same, with exactly the same account data, and exactly the same game content/gameworld as it had in previous iterations. All they did, was tack on new content and graphics to the pre-existing stuff.

They add a number when a large update or whatever has been hit. The move from Rs1 to Rs2 in 2004, was a rewritten game engine to give better graphics and less clunky gameplay. The move from Rs2 to Rs3 in 2013, was a new combat system and a new interface system.
In all though, the game is still the same as its always been. If you remember your login info, you can log in and your character's stats and everything will still be there.

Personally, I think it's neat that Jagex (the developer's name) acknowledges their long-time players, and created "Veteran capes" for accounts that have attained certain 5-year milestones. There's a 5, 10, and 15 year cape.
