When I hear that game is an RPG I expect it will play in a certain way

• System:

  • levels and perks are not in an RPG game just bc, they allow player to pick a certain playstyle to specialise in
  • In tabletop games, and sometimes but not always in video games, systems are also there to aid roleplay. You don't have to be smart and knowledgeable about a large amount of subjects to roleplay a high-intelligence character, and you don't need to lift twice your weight in the gym to play as a barbarian.
  • Impact of the system on other parts. E.g., Speech skill should impact your options when interacting with NPCs, opening new paths.
  • Of course, there are games that are more system-oriented than others. In some, the system is more complex, and in others, it's simpler, but the system, in general, is an important part of the genre. You are not in the game; your character is, and it's not the same.

• Player character and player agency

  • The player character doesn't have to be a blank canvas like in Elder Scrolls games; Shepard was an established character. However, it's important that you are able to shape that character in some way as they interact with the world around them.
  • You should be able to express the character you are playing. It doesn't always have to be something big. Simple options that don't impact progression too much, such as agreeing to help a quest giver because you want to help, or agreeing because you will be compensated, are options with the same end result but with different characters. Renegade Shepard and Paragon Shepard from Mass Effect both try to save the day but in very different ways.
  • in general being able to define your character, their history, their personality, attitude etc.

• And yeah, story, world-building, and interaction with said elements.

  • Good RPG allow you to walk around and not only learn of the story the world around you and characters in it, but also impact it in different ways. Again, it doesn't necessarily have to always be huge.
  • Plot doesn't need to be grand with gazylion endings, but completely linear story with no changes isn't really good for an RPG game.

What makes RPG game is interaction between those elements imo.

Hogwarts Legacy has main character with no backstory, we are never allowed to ask about it or state it ourselves bc no one asks. Even characters who seem to care about purity of blood never inquire about it. Most times when you are given dialogue options you get two and it doesn't matter what you pick bc before it and after the line your character will always act the same. The only defining moments your character can get is whether you want to learn bad spells or not and impact is that you will not know them. Events afterwards play out the same. Game pretends to have build verity when it doesn't, bc save for a handful of perks they don't matter and don't have any impact on your ability to progress or solve problems the game presents.

On the other hand in a game like pillars of eternity you pick your background and a character in the prologue will ask you about it. Why did you chose it? How your character ended up the way they are? Why did you came to this place? It doesn't really change much, but you can define who your character is. You aren't random nobody. People complained a lot about Fallout 4 dialogue system bc options you picked didn't correspond well to what your character was saying. You could pick something that sounded nice and your character would say something mean. Breaking the immersion.

Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous has a full alignment system, and often the options you get sound similar and have similar outcomes but correspond to different alignments and effectively characters with different personalities

There are also innumerable RPG games where your choices and actions leave an impact on the world and characters after you end your playthrough, and if you were a different character, their stories would end differently.

I love RPG and the fact that a lot of games which could simply be action adventure call themselves RPG is sort of my personal issue.

I can open action-adventure and RPG tabs on any store front and most of big new action adventure games will be in RPG category whether they belong there or not.

When I see RPG tag I expect certain type of experience from the game which I wouldn't if it was simply an adventure game without that tag.

I don't have a problem with just following a linear story of a fully establish character if it's what the game is about, but it infuriates me when game has lvl and xp and is automatically called RPG.

RPG elements can be great, they are an additional content, can give more meaningful progression but by the nine hells they don't make any game an RPG.

I mean, Action RPG always were sort of light on many more classical RPG elements. They are more focused on action, but those elements are still there

I didn't play fallout 1 myself, but I watched some videos about and yeah. Never played or had much exposure to ESO.

Some time ago term cRPG was coined to use for RPG games following the more classical formula. "Computer RPG" used to refer to any RPG game played on a computer, but eventually with how watered down term RPG became cRPG started being used. Even if game has port to console.

More modern cRPG would be

• Pillars of Eternity
• Pathfinder games by Owlcat
• Rogue trader by Owlcat

There are also a lot of other games some consider cRPG but others dont. They still reflect very well elements I mentioned

• Baldurs Gate 3
• Divinity original sin I & II
• Disco Elysium
• Dragon Age Origins

But even with more action oriented RPG you can have very good examples

• Mass Effect trilogy
• The Wither series

And I could probably go on

Like I mentioned above it started as "Computer Roleplaying Games" bc before RPG would be played on the table top in form of systems such as D&D, Pathfinder but also Cyberpunk or different subsystems of the world of darkness like Vampire the Masquerade and the list goes on. Table top games were defined by their system as well as a group of players and their Game Master who wrote the story and adjusted it based on random events and players decision.

You can't really port that experience to a video game someone will be playing alone, certain compromises have to be made. E.g. bc there is no game master to adjust the game on the go you have to account for what a player can do ahead of time.

But in general that's what RPG should be about with Devs being the Game Master planning ahead of time, designing story and environments, interesting characters to talk to the player, the world, creating opportunities.

I think you would have to define what you mean by "replayability". The way I'm familiar with the term means that game has some incentive to play it again from the start.

Games focused on choices like Detroit: Become Human encourage more than one playthrough to see how the stories they present can play out differently.

Even Skyrim as a game has so much different small things spread around that you can find different things you previously missed when you play it again.

I don't think No Man’s Sky offers anything, you even have to complete the maon story again to access some content which is a complaint I hear very often.

Minecraft I guess offers you a new world on a new save, bit idk how much that counts. I don't play Minecraft.

I think it's influenced by the books. While it's not the focus books didn't really avoid the topic.

Geralt, and witchers in general, have a rather dangerous profession that pays well and requires them to move a lot so they partake in drinking and company.

Sorceresses like Yenefer or Triss have lives full of intrigue and politics so using their looks as a tool isn't something beyond them and they aren't afraid to display their feminine sides.

I think if you prioritise things like story it's well worth it. If memory serves right game starts in Kaer Morhen but then you are sent to White Orchard, a village serving as starting location and get to explore what that world and the game have to offer.

Side quests explore things like soldiers from different sides dragging each other from the battlefield after they were forgotten, racial prejudice non-humans face in this world, occupation by a foreign nation etc

hmmm... So I wanted to try out Phoenix point bc it is on Game Pass. Game doesn't have AZERTY keyboard layout option and by default uses QWERTY... Annoying, but no biggie, I'll remap the keybinds... Can't assign "Z" to camera up bc it is used somewhere else... even tho other keys give you an option to rebind anyway except for this one... no biggie I'll just unbind Z and assign it to camera up... WTF? Reserved for nothing and can't be used?

Found a thread on steam complaining about it... in 2020...

The file that has the settings in it is a jopt file. Maybe can open in notepad++ to change the settings manually.

In fact the suggestion to get around this issue is basically do that.

1. In game options, bind MOVE CAMERA UP to U key (as Z is forbidden), then quit the game.
2. Go to folder C:\Users[You]\AppData\LocalLow\Snapshot Games Inc\Phoenix Point\GOG\Saves,
3. open/edit Bindings.jopt file with Notepad++
4. Go arround the two lines 280, and 295: in both [ "Name": "u", ] change 'u' to 'z'
5. Save the file and go launch the game to verifye in options that MOVE CAMERA UP has now Z key.

So, I installed it again. I don't have "Snapshot Games Inc" folder in my AppData, not just LocalLow, I checked the whole AppData, but that's not where weird crap ends. Xbox app refuses to create a desktop shortcut and normally every game gives you an option to browse files except for this one which doesn't have that option (screenshots of NMS vs Phoenix Point). I can't even find installation folder in the folder where it installs all games. Game works though, I can't find a single file, but it launches... Idk, I give up

How do most switch era nintendo games feel the same?

But i am intrigued because like games like mario kart and splatoon (seemingly made by different devs through the branches of nintendo) both feel similar design and visual wise. Its really weird and hard to explain

i was troubleshooting for like 5 hours yesterday and discovered which mod was causing a conflict all because of ONE setting, not even cuz of the mod iteself per'se

cyan overhaul has "mission vfx and Lobby vfx" and idk what those are, but after disabling them, my sentry audio mods work again.

the mod creator themself as well as a comment on nexus that was referring to a post i left about the issue, all helped solved it but, i just dont know why it happens

youd never think a visual mod would even touch or affect audio mods, yet, there we were finding out that thats exactly what it was doing

In my experience, it's possible to turn the tide but it's very down to positioning. Had a 2v2 last night with a duo that had an LMG and some sort of green tier rifle

We somehow beat them with free loadout gear 😂

Yea I’m pretty sure there death explosion may only be just an animation not a physically damaging one. Unless I got lucky. But I was right ontop when it blew up, perfectly fine 100% hp
