You get 1 point per level, each point can be used to pick a designated card from the "SPECIAL" deck. These cards are level specific and only become available as you level. You can also get a pack every 5 levels that sometimes gives you cards that are over the level you're supposed to be when you get them, allowing you to spec into certain builds early - but, after 50 all decks open up and you can freely choose what cards you want, each time you level.

Keep in mind however, upto 50, as you're picking cards you're also picking skill distribution points.

The chief objective leveling up is to get those cards you need to make your basic leveling easier. A set you can use to get the set you really wanted.

...and hope along the way you luck out and get some of those you wanted, too

Once I finish this Kenshi playthrough (which is Seymour killing every faction in the game), I have an idea for an even worse one. An armorless playthrough, with the Skeleton Apocalypse mod installed (adds relatively large roaming squads of skeletons), using a Hiver (bug person with relatively low base stats). Oh, and I want to do this unarmed with no prosthetics to improve stats or HP

One of my friends suggested I do a damageless playthrough, but that’s physically impossible because taking damage is absurdly common

They'd have 11 hours warning of any serious carrington like event, so plenty of time to minimize damage.

Nothing can be done about games that require a server.
Like gloria victis shutdown a few months ago, and there's simply no way they could keep it open being an mmo without any sort of dedicated server framework developed
