There is a lot of character progression, it’s by skills but those are level based, they can all be trained pretty passively, and the loot is a combination of both. The best weapons (Meitou grade) are static, and the map is static as well. Loot that isn’t tied to a specific character is mostly randomized

It is very sandbox and player-goal oriented. The only “quest” is a joke from a character attempting to demean you, but you can hunt down bounties. Random events can happen, but they’re mainly base raids.

Or if you do not have their book on you they will become hostile

I really hate the Holy Nation. Mostly because they hate me, since my character is a Skeleton (robot). Ironically, the “god” they worship is actually a robot.

The game also plays like an RTS

At first that sounds like a massive problem, but it works really well

Mods also make the experience pretty great

Every race has their trade offs and benefits

The Shek are very strong and good with combat, the Hivers are good at labor, the humans have access to the Holy Nation as well as access to all armor types, the Skeletons don’t require food and can heal faster than the others, but are just about universally shunned

The United Cities doesn’t outright hate them, but there’s a reason none of their nobility are Skeletons

Everything in Kenshi has a trade off

Heavy weapons are really good at punching through armor and dealing with large groups, but they need a high strength stat to use properly. Martial arts is absurdly powerful at high levels, but training from 0 is really difficult and it’s not great at handling groups. Crossbows can be extremely annoying to the enemy, but you better have a melee fighter to keep said enemies busy

And toughness is an incredibly important skill. It trains entirely passively, by getting the shit kicked out of you, but it dictates at what point you die and at what point you go unconscious

Lemme just list the important skills: Melee Attack, Melee Defense, Toughness, Lockpicking, Athletics (also entirely passive), Strength and whatever weapon class you choose (Katanas, Heavy Weapons, etc,)

Oh, and unarmed combat also has its own stats, dodge and martial arts, but those are functionally identical to melee defense and melee attack

Also, there are a lot of AI bugs, especially when characters move at higher speeds

Occasionally characters will get stuck in water, or target an enemy that is attempting to flee instead of one that is directly attacking them

Seymour managed to dodge his way into an area that he couldn’t navigate out of, since falling isn’t really a mechanic and he was stuck on a wall, so some poor bastard let him unstuck himself

Martial arts in particular gets buggy, because dodging occasionally ignores wall hitboxes

Oh, and sometimes towns will spawn without NPCs, there’s a really easy fix however

I’m using a mod that lets me train more skills up to lvl 100, this is what training the dodge stat looks like
