You know what would make a compelling evil good guy? - A devil of omission. His super power? He can possess people, but it must be welcomed. Downside is, they're always worse off for it. That is to say, if the possession was for any reason or purpose, his powers would backfire and they'd be worse for the wear.
The upside is of course that they'd have super powers, like strength, endurance and invulnerability but if they were hoping that this meant they'd be better at anything - nope.
If they were a bad guy hoping to capitalize on this power to defeat a foe with their expert combat skills, they'd suddenly forget how to fight and be a super powered idiot.
If they were falling from a great height hoping to capitalize on this super power to survive the landing, they'd survive but it would still hurt a lot and that pain would persist and manifest in other unexpected ways like explosive diarrhea
Every use of his powers would come with a caveat, because the devil is in the details and nothing is free.
