There are some real nice mods available. Modders regularly post screenshots and videos in #nms-modding and they do an excellent job.
I haven't played with any mods for a LONG time.

@sweet cave Probably best to just search nexus and pick the ones you want, but there are quite a few very subtle mods, for example one called cleaner space which has optionsfor clearing in-space dust or removing/reducing the blazing streaks that appear during pulse boosting

I think that had to do with like, turning the quality up? I've noticed a lot of trees aren't around anymore, but it's just the ones that had follow-me sprite leaves. Actually, I think ALL of the follow me sprite flora is gone? (like the grass in the screen above)
I always thought it got the job done, but I can see why some don't like it.
This might just be me but I feel like the grass doesn't shine like this anymore? Also, even the green grass just pops so much more
Either way, I don't hate NEXT, and my low-framerate Pathfinder does the job for the time being. I'm gonna drop one more and then probably play NMS on my PS4 for a bit. Gonna go on a hunt for the square grass! 🕵

My 2 cents -- Hello Games overreacted to complaints that the original color palette was too "wild." Personally, that made is seem more SciFi and weird to me. The toned down and limited planet palettes now kind of bum me out. And cave surface textures are more "realistic" than I'd like. Bring back the 60's SciFi book cover look, I say!

landing on a planet I wish to have that feeling, having very little idea of what to expect except a rough color guess based on what I saw from space
Is it going to be a vibrant, powerfully lit wonderland of blazing color? Or is it as far out as pluto, where midday looks like dusk and the grass is grey/brown ?

I agree. Many of the complaints are not just that colors have been dramatically toned down, it's that the color variety has been dramatically reduced. For instance, pre-Next had 36 sky palettes, Next reduced that to 4. Same with lush grass colors, pre-Next had about a dozen, again Next had just 4. And this reduction is seen throughout Next. Visions' only improved on this very slightly, I think both the above examples are now up to a whopping 6 (?).
I, and I think most returning players, would be fine with the addition of some of the newer muted colors. But it's the replacement of them, and severe reduction in variety that's getting so much (IMHO deserved) flak.
Many pre-Next biomes did restrict palettes to thematic color schemes (warmer colors on scorched worlds, cooler on frozen ones, etc), but they did it very successfully. They still generated a wide variety, so the same biome would look very different on different worlds. In Next every desert world I land on seems to be the exact same color tan, with the same dull-colored plants. In Atlas Rises my desert screenshots show a huge range of earthy colors: tans, oranges, browns, yellows, blacks, greys. Combined with more varied flora and sky-light colors, they each look very unique.

I built my base on the surface of the planet and when i came back to it it was in the middle of the planet. I had to use the terrain destroyer thing to get to it and its inside the damn planet?
