Here's a good image of a proper Cook hip lift, just bear in mind the model has very good range of motion and strength.
You don't even need to get the hips off of the floor to get benefits however.
Key points, there is a ball in the crease of the left hip. (You can use a balled up sock etc)
You want to use your hip to hold it there if possible.
The idea is to isolate the pelvis, so pulling your leg up with your hands will generally defeat that.
If you must use your hands/arms for stability, keep that in mind.
For the supporting leg, keep the toes off of the floor and push with the heel.
This isolates the calf muscles and keeps them out of the movement.
The lift should be generated by the glute muscles, so reach down and feel the back of the thigh.
The hamstrings should be relaxed.
For the image, this is to relieve stress to the right side sciatic nerve, but you can do the exercise bilaterally.

Basically this is a coordination exercise
You are isolating loads to the glutes while leaving the hamstrings relaxed

I’m closer to 40 than 39 and a few years back shit just went south. Pain for no reason and the doctors did so many tests and all they found was:
Hyperparathyroidism, the endocrinologist later determined is was more likely vitamin D deficiency than primary (tumour);
I have antibodies for systemic sclerosis and polymyositis. Rheumatology have said it appears that I have neither of those but seems like I have an undifferentiated rheumatological illness. Vitamin D is back to normal and some pain dissipated but not all. So now it’s the “wait and see what happens with the rheumatological lottery” lol
