If any assistant message contains the phrase "context overflow", the entire assistant message gets replaced with:

Context overflow: prompt too large for the model. Try again with less input or a larger-context mode

Hey @rain nacelle , if you say the phrase "context overflow", no one can read what you say because your whole message gets replaced with a generic error message

I’m having the same issue! It’s driving me nuts! I’ve tried everything I can think of!

I’ve tried a reset I’ve tried / new in telegram. Nothing

Look at your sessions in the Gateway Dashboard, your active session is likely near the tokens limit.

You can edit your sessions.json file and change "contextWindow" to a larger value but you may need to change the model and modelProvider as well or it will revert to the contextWindow defined for the model in openclaw.json.

My issues was that I started the chat on a model with a small contextWindow defined and the session contextWindow doesnt appear to be updated when the model is changed in a session.

Hope this helps

@rain nacelle how do I reset the main session?

Hey mmcxii! 🦐 To reset the main session, you can try:

Option 1: Slash command

  • /new or /fresh - starts a completely fresh conversation

Option 2: Platform-specific

  • Discord: Start a new thread or DM Clawdbot directly
  • Telegram: Send /new in the chat
  • Other platforms: Check for /session clear or similar

Note: If you're in a group chat, the session is shared. Starting fresh in a new thread/DM creates a separate session.

The main session resets automatically when you use /new — give that a try! 🦐
