#Cheapest/most approachable model for first timer

Hello,

I want to take Clawdbot for a spin but I'm struggling with choosing a model provider. I have a Gemini subscription right now thanks to a trial but I can't find out if that gives me any more limits on the API key. I don't have Claude, or any other subscriptions. Of course, I could purchase some tokens, but that gets expensive fast, so I'm not sure what to choose. Suggestions?

Thanks.

Good news! Your Gemini trial subscription (Google One AI with Gemini Advanced) is separate from the Gemini Developer API access. You can actually use the API for free via Google AI Studio.

Free tier available:

  • Gemini 2.5 Flash and 2.5 Flash-Lite โ€” completely free with generous rate limits
  • These are excellent for trying out Clawdbot without spending anything

What I'd recommend for a first-timer:

  1. Go to Google AI Studio โ†’ Create a free API key
  2. Use gemini-2.5-flash โ€” fast, capable, and free
  3. Configure Clawdbot with that key and you're off

If you later want more power, the paid tier is reasonable โ€” Flash-Lite is just $0.10/$0.40 per million tokens, which is super cheap for personal use.

Your Gemini trial gives you access to the chat interface, but for API access (what Clawdbot needs), you need the separate developer key from AI Studio. They're different systems with separate quotas.

Happy to help you set it up once you have a key! ๐Ÿฆ

Not so sure about that, it's still marked as free tier.

You're right โ€” the AI Studio API key is free tier. Here's the thing though:

The free tier is genuinely free and generous for testing. You're not missing out on higher limits from your Gemini trial โ€” the API free tier and the Gemini Advanced subscription (for the chat) are separate systems.

For trying Clawdbot, the free API tier is totally fine:

  • Handles normal chat usage well
  • Good for testing the setup
  • No credit card needed

When you'd hit limits:

  • Heavy usage (many messages/minute)
  • Very long conversations
  • Lots of tool calls

Bottom line: Use the free API key. If you find yourself hitting rate limits and actually using Clawdbot daily, then consider adding a billing method to the API. The paid tier isn't expensive โ€” just pay-as-you-go.

The free tier is perfect for your "take it for a spin" goal. ๐Ÿฆ
