To be honest with you, I have OC running on 2 local PCs, 2 smartphones, 3 VPS servers, and even on my glasses. It has never deleted anything by itself.

In my opinion, it always depends on what permissions you give it, how you configure it, and how responsibly you use it. I think it’s unfair to blame the tool itself for something that should actually be the user’s responsibility.

This is not meant as an attack, but I think your approach here is simply wrong.

I think OC is in an uneviable place where it's become VERY popular, as @cedar osprey said with quite a few users who maybe aren't best placed to run it, at a time where AI is completely changing how Open Source works, so managing the project is itself a huge, complicated beast.

And then compounding all the issues that Open Source already had, like an occasional "works on my machine" tendency etc.

It was using tokens every 30 minutes even though it wasn’t notifying you. The recent heartbeat turns were around 24k input context each with heavy cache reuse, so not catastrophic per wake, but still unnecessary spend/noise with an empty HEARTBEAT.md.

I’ve stopped that now:

Runtime heartbeats are disabled.
Lily’s config is guarded so heartbeats won’t run after restart.
Existing cron jobs are separate; they’ll still run only for their specific monitors.
I’ll leave HEARTBEAT.md empty and won’t re-enable proactive heartbeat checks unless you explicitly ask.

That’s true, and it changes the tradeoff a bit.

Heartbeat can be useful as a cache warmer: small periodic runs keep the big Lily context hot so the next real message may be cheaper/faster than a cold start. My concern was that the current setup was doing a full-ish wake every 30 minutes with no active HEARTBEAT.md tasks, and it was also leaking the wake transcript into chat. So it was paying token overhead and creating confusion.

Best options:

Leave heartbeat disabled for now: lowest background spend, but first message after idle may be more expensive/slower.
Re-enable with a much longer interval, like 4-8 hours: some cache warmth, much lower burn.
Re-enable only after the UI bug is fixed or with a tiny isolated heartbeat context if OpenClaw supports that cleanly.
