- encode_pa6r is longer and more tangled: 147 lines versus 100 in the 27B version.

The 27B version has a more coherent internal model:
- Size classes are stored as header IDs directly.
- CLI resolves names to IDs correctly.
- Parser explicitly validates exact frame-record multiples.
- Bit unpacking stops at exactly the expected pixel count.
- Decode is shorter and more direct.

Caveat: 27B is still not production-clean. Its palette generation uses set(), so color ordering is nondeterministic, and its “too many colors” handling is just truncation. But between the two generated artifacts, 27B is the cleaner and more maintainable base.

For context, I had it implement a PNG to custom image format converter, for which I had a very clean specification.

GPT-5.5 got it in one shot, both Qwen models needed 3 turns to get it correct. 27B was the only one that got it actually correct, 35B just got it to "tests pass", which I suppose revealed a hole in my test coverage. 😅

But 35B hit 145 tok/s token generation, whereas 27B got to about 60 tok/s
