i think i can handle making the art assets for the chatacters tbh, i think the heaviest part of creating these characters for me is the coding
the unfortunate truth, and i hate to say it considering all the work youve put in, is that some of the designs for the mutants im not quite happy with and id like to revise them
and i mean this on my own accord, i need to bring some of these guys back to the lab and turn them into something i can be more proud of π¦

i think in terms of how they play, as long as they follow the idea of the character and theyre simple enough, ill be fine with it
though if anyone has ideas for the many characters who dont have much yet (a ton of these mutants dont have actives) id say check up with me first and we can brainstorm it

as for the artistic direction for the characters, i feel like i have a better idea of what i want for these guys, so itd probably be best to let me handle it

i think whats best to discuss right now is how we'd like these characters to work mechanically
ill be honest, im not a super-dedicated throne modder, i just really like the game and can do 1 loop at best
so getting advice and full-on ideas from people whove probably done a lot more is fun
not to mention you guys are masters at coding, its insane
12 (14?) characters is kind of a tall order so good luck
generally just make what you think would be fun. some characters being 'bad' is fine
I just would aim for not being stronger than crystal

ive got a good understanding of how the characters work, its just about testing and re-testing on how they feel to play and what would be best
i dont really plan on going all in on this project atm anyway, i have a lot more than this to work on π
if i were primed and ready to go id be doing coding for this too

and for the people who want to see this complete, id love to discuss potential aspects of the characters and see what you guys manage to code w/ what we come up with

despite my lack of activity im still thinking about how to make statue feel fun while keeping the central gimmick of not being able to move in a traditional sense
being fair i only came up with a rads = teleport mechanic to prevent teleportation abuse, but maybe a cooldown would be better? im not sure
with a cooldown new issues begin to arise too, like fluidity of gameplay and such
maybe i should take a page from the recent edith mod for isaac? maybe statue could just hop around?? Idk!!
(by this i mean tping everywhere would be Slow and against the point of fast-paced bullet hell throne is known for)
statue IS heavily inspired by edith, guess it makes sense that this sort of balance is difficult given she was a scrapped character

In other news most of statue's a-skin sprites/anims are done
all she really needs are loadout icons, big and small portraits, and a campfire anim
but all her in-game anims are complete
i think before i tackle all that big stuff i'm going to try to complete the in-game sprites for the characters I'm happy with, and come up with spiffy new designs for the ones im unhappy with
namely bird, mouths, fungus, and shark
mouths and shark probably only need a little adjustment
their designs are fine, i just want to make their colors more appealing
bird i feel isnt Asshole-like enough. like, he needs to be a jerk. bird is supposed to give off Fancy Prick vibes
and fungus... well, i feel like i could lean more into the mushroomy side of it. make them look mystical n all that
in terms of actual code development i still need to iron out what i want the abilities for these characters to be specifically
whats most important to me is that they:
- feel fun
- feel vanilla
- work in multiplayer
feeling vanilla is probably the most important
the only character with some kind of "complex" mechanic or meter will be punk
yknow, rogue alt n all that. gotta have a meter
any other abilities should be diagetic and easy to pick up and understand
lowest priority is currently b-skins
i have a few ideas and designs already, but im not gonna get to spriting them until everything else is done (or at least, everything that requires some foresight)

the one for corpse is a joke i just think itd be funny to be playing as a floating crucified corpse
of course for any skins after these ones (c-skins, etc) id say its fair game and whatever people care to make ill include as little bonuses
everything ive said though hinges on if i am actually motivated enough to get this mod done! muahahhaa!!

i think people may be a bit misguided since this thread got randomly revived
this project isnt necessarily "cancelled" but I haven't worked on it in over a year
so i want to say to anyone just discovering this thread to not get your hopes up
the original plan was to add a whole new set of characters that take the theming of the original cast and attempt to reverse their (part of) idea/gameplay style in a way that makes them interesting to play
for example, frog being a character that always moves being "replaced" with statue, a character who can't move traditionally
there wouldnt be any removal of characters idk why i used the word replaced but you get what i mean
and after that, if i was feeling up to it id've probably added an alternate route that can be accessed via the main one
with new areas n all that

i never really made an alternate character for Y.V. cause i felt like making an alternate character for him would be kinda strange considering he's more of a character for a different game, but eventually warmed up to the idea
this was the concept i came up with
undecided, but something obviously focused on melee weapons
i love melee weapons
simplest thing would just be pop pop but for melee swings
but it seems a bit niche
what if instead
maybe the ability to swing all weapons like melee for an active? it wouldnt be an ideal choice but always having a melee weapon is p helpful

for a melee focused character i think itd be neat to lean into melee rather than just give her melee attacks more range

for your answer currently its looking a bit better than it was before in terms of motivation but tbh w the new update and upcoming fixes, im gonna hold off on continuing until things are settled again
theres a lot of stuff thats been put on the table but not a lot im entirely satisfied with
id like to rework some characters, designs and concepts
some characters are perfectly fine though
in honesty its a lot of stuff to tackle, i was considering making one character to upload to itch just to get something done and get my feet wet
unrelated to this project, i mean
who knows, maybe ill abandon the "alternate character" idea altogether! coming up with passives and actives is hard enough already
