I made a post about this like 5 months ago and I wanted to expand on the topic and really flesh out the kind of execution and level of detail I'm imagining here.

Housing instruments are entertaining for about 5 minutes for someone who doesn't know music, but for anyone with experience it sucks trying to play songs with a huge range in notes. If you need to press notes on the two different octave ranges, or trying to play notes from major and minor back to back... You're cooked. You can't even play the songs that are present in Wynncraft's OST because some of the notes literally don't exist. This might niche, as most players aren't even aware the drums or harp exist in the game at all, but I propose a major rework to how players engage with musical instruments:

#

Player made music

1.) Make a craftable item called a "Music Sheet". Scroll recipes are now a 1:2 ratio of Ink to Paper, while music sheets are a 2:1 ratio of ink to paper. This makes sense because music sheets are denser in ink usage than standard writing is. Fits perfectly with Scribing Station
2.) Activating the Music Sheet brings up a GUI that lets you select notes at varying ranges and lets you manipulate the timing and space between them, along with a Preview option that plays your music with Noteblocks (just like the music maker mod)
3.) Higher tier Music Sheets have more pages to work with. I'm against note range being limited by the tier of the product, cause I don't think you should need Gylian oil to play Mary had a Little Lamb, but I think "You need Dernic paper to write a half hour musical composition" makes sense
4.) While in front of an instrument, activating the Music Sheet gives 2 extra option called "Play" and "Join band" that let you either play the sheet immediately, or bring up a menu that allows you to invite nearby players to join your "band". Similar to a Raid ready menu, it shows you their name, the instrument they are using with their sheet, and whether they are "ready" or not. If everyone hits the ready, you all begin to play your sheets at the same time.

Changes to the world and player engagement

1.) Traveling bands and/or stages and podiums with example instruments that players can interact with and experiment with outside of their housing. This one has a lot of flexibility in it, and CT has tons of leeway with how they might implement it, but my favorite interpretations are stuff like:
a.) Traveling band NPCs that only appear during a certain time of day within the game, and depending on the day of the week go to different cities. Monday Detlas, Tuesday Llevigar, etc etc. They only play a few songs, and they are dependent on location. (you can buy the music sheet for one of the songs that you like but only if they are still there and you are within the correct location)
b.) Band NPCs that exist in multiple cities (do not travel or despawn) and each have a side quest associated with fixing their particular instruments. Completing it "teaches you" to use those instruments permanently like Recovering the Past with Ability Shards. They give you a free music sheet that is already filled out that corresponds to the instrument you fixed.

2.) Continuing off of point 1, having instruments that are placed in the world accessible to players. The range would only be about 4-5 block radius, but anyone within range can listen to you play (only one person per instrument) so that way you don't have to invite people to housing every single time you want to show them a song
3.) Portable instruments so that you can play custom songs on the go, and play songs for your party or random people you meet if you really want to. This would add an entirely new level of player engagement and creativity!

Controls overhaul

This one is only a singular point, but I want to add a "professional" mode in controls when playing instruments. Instead of having 1-8 with 9 being the octave switch, you can press 1-9 for all notes and moving your mouse to hover over a different block changes the octave. Just like how you can see Keyboard Mode in the screenshot, it would function exactly like that except there would be multiple blocks for you to hover over not just the one. Ideally, your keyboard hand would stay on the numbers (or even the Numberpad if you're a psychopath) while your other hand remains on the mouse for quick switching between ranges. This way, instead of being limited to just 16 notes, you have 9x however many ranges you want to add. With enough dedication, anyone would be able to play their favorite songs. In this mode, the game gives complete freedom to play anything, as long as you have enough skill to pull it off!

Additional Notes:

  • Ideally, you would be able to sell music sheets on the trade market, but it would be very easy for people to mislabel their sheets and trick people on TM. Adding a way to preview the music before you buy it or something like that would be really helpful but how to go about it is beyond my expertise
  • Shadow makes a point of it being bad to tie it into profs. Could also make a music scribing station 🤷‍♂️

@final crown btw this is the post I spent an hour making lol

putting this into profs is just

👎

i hope you reconsider your suggestion

yeah I don't think this should be part of the scribing profession, but otherwise I can see using the scribing materials for this

#

also this feels like it would require a lot of dev time, maybe equivalent to a major update or rework for a system that would need it more

this could be nice for a socialization update though ngl

#

cuz Wynn isn't really that good with in-game player interactions. it's just vanilla jumping around your base with extra steps

#

having entire npcs all over the map for this system does feel a bit overkill

sure

side quest that introduces you to the instruments and gives you an example song would be non-intrusive and cool

quick nymph
#

perhaps not a mini quest but more similar to like afelis or silverbull hq npcs
because at the end of the day, Wynn as a game isn't centered around music making, so tying it in like a must do for 100% quest completion or something or flooding the map with it feels like it would detract from its core. professions already spread themselves like the plague, we don't need another thing to be everywhere constantly looming over the player

Fair enough

#

I'm not suggesting this entire post with the intention of integrating every minute detail, it's just my personal take on trying to make music a more meaningful way for players to hangout and make friends in Wynncraft

#

tbh if nothing else happens the thing I want more than anything is the "professional" mode

Any and all music suggestions are so hella. I made one last year asking for NPC dialogue to pull a Don’t Starve and use instrumental leitmotifs (or general themes) depending on the area they’re in. My example was to have Lari incorporate bits of Aldorei’s progression in places like the Olux Swamp’s key/score as dialogue

Complete Music overhaul and more

Renamed since music maker is only referenced in a single point and the rest is original ideas

@sour swift idk if you remember the old post but this one is significantly expanded from that original idea
