Lag in all online services has been a constant thorn in the side for server hosters and people using said services, and can never fully be removed due its very nature. Wynncraft is no exception to lag either, with players alike having to deal with drops in playability due to their hardware, or the server’s hardware, this does not include ping either, with players having different ISP’s and varying distances to where the servers are being hosted, so it does not surprise me to realize some have it better than others, but those time frames where people have the least ping are often the times where the server has the most problems, due to those hours being prime time for the most traffic, causing a kind of balance that makes no one truly at peak performance, outside of a few exceptions.
Now, these issues are vary in frequency, but typically players with lower end systems get the short end of the stick, unless high optimizations are made to make fps more consistent, but that sometimes doesn’t work and can only go as far as the server can handle. For example, I used a mod pack that allowed me to have consistently high dps and performance(outside of shaders but even then it was only bad with a large amount of particles), but it would only let me go so far with the server I’m on, as if the server lags, you don’t have a say in when it stops.
Now, I use a different mod pack(the other would cause my game to randomly close out which became far too hindering), but now I’m using a mod pack that doesn’t have the same luxurious performance, so when my performance slows I typically turn off particles(yes, even with /pq low setting), which helps counteract it when in laggy areas, but again I can’t stop the server lag, which goes into the main point of discussion, the prelude to annihilation major world event(this will not be discussing what happened today as it’s kicking a dead horse at this point).
Annie is meant to be an event type boss fight, gathering people together for a special 2 a week battle with the chance of getting exclusive rewards and even mythics, but it’s rarity causes its biggest issue, performance. When Annie was just starting when 2.1 released, it caused a lot of performance issues; however, due to its prevalence it could be fought quite a lot as it got rarer and rarer giving players the freedom to pick and choose when to put on the punching gloves and take a swing, this is no longer the case. Annie being rarer causes players from many timezones to try and fight them to get the rewards due to the wait time being detrimental, so some people stay up late, some people wake up early, some people play the game far longer than they would normally, just to fight Annie. This causes worlds to be filled with players all crammed in one spot, each having spells that produce many particles and models that slow servers drastically depending on how many players and what class they play, resulting in massive lag spikes or freezing. This gets worse when you realize that even though you don’t see other parties playing Annie, the server does, causing it to stack lag on lag.
I can continue, but I think this gives the gist of performance problems, but what can be done to mitigate these issues, well more performance toggles would be nice, maybe only being able to see your particles and raid particles(wing circle and watched for example), maybe make Annie have extra appearances(like 1 to 3 hours within its original appearance) so players have more opportunities to fight Annie so overall there are less massive congregations of particles and models that need to be rendered each time due to the extra leniency, but that’s up to the ct, devs, and server hoster / managers.
Sorry for this being so long, I typically have alot to say in as many words as possible, so I understand if you only skimmed through it, I’ll probably make a tldr in the comments soon.
