#spell combo telegraphing

enemies in wynn have a concept of a spell combo, where they cast spells in a specific order.

in theory this is great and should mean that wynn enemies can be "read" just like enemies in a soulslike game.

unfortunately this isnt the case for 2 reasons.

  1. there is not much differentiation between the casting of different spells
  2. there is no indicator for the start of a combo.

now to clarify, i dont think the issue stems from combos not having a unique telegraph from one another. I think the issue is that in combat, it is very hard to tell when a combo starts and ends, which means that even though on paper you can tell by which spells they have casted, in practice that is difficult without already knowing the combos first.

basically, i think that if spell combos had an (identical) telegraph before they started, it would make it easier for players to learn to recognise and differentiate the combos.

tldr: an identical particle/sound telegraph at the start of every spell combo will lower the barrier for entry to learning mob spell combos, without lowering the skill requirement to recognise and react to said combos

there is no indicator for the start of a combo.
A bit of a correction but: Aren't combos usually "initiated" by casting a non leathal spell

#

Like normal charge, push, pull, etc.

#

Its not necessarily the best indicator but I do remember that the spell combo tutorial teaches you this

are you referring to some in-game spell combo tutorial, or a video/post? last i played there was no such thing in-game

There's a quest for it, albiet I can't remember which one

huh, i played that but didnt notice any mention of spell combos

I think it was elemental excercise from what I remember
It was a fight just outside Detlas

maybe each spell could just have a different color circle, or different particle circle as they are about to be cast

either way i think that to account for how busy some fights can be, there needs to be a telegraph for the start of spell combos, so that the start can be identified more easily for players still learning the sequence

there is, in fact, an indicator for combos

#

We're aware of this though, yeah.

#

Mob spells are a bit silly.

that's good to know then. i really want wynn pve to be good because it has basically all the workings of a proper combat system, except for the telegraphing.

i know clear telegraphing in minecraft is just generally difficult to do, but it would be so nice if we did have it

oh yk what would be cool, if instead, it was like 1 spell you get the 1 white circle at the head/floor, but for combos, it'd be concentric circles for each spell in the combo

the current telegraph for single spells or the start of a combo is the same- a loud sort of booming magicky noise. further spells in the combo have that noise very softly and a sharp pinging noise

The only way is to completely tear down the current hardcoded system for mob spells and develop a more flexible one that is far more customizable on the CT’s end

#

Something that obviously won’t be done in two seconds but still an ideal scenario nonetheless

#

Replace the current spells with the bare possible actions and watch as creative ways are found to combine several of them into unique attacks
