Anniversary of this thing. We did a banquet with guild leaders from various alliances to discuss foreign policy some years ago. Very roleplay, but with ingame implications ofc. Was a fun time. Even as “enemy” guilds we could get together to roleplay it out and create a political atmosphere. Yeah, a bit nerdy and weird I get that, but it was fun.

Me too. I was a heavy RPer I admit. I loved the simulation of tangible politics that the community created. I think RP helped to lighten the mood but still be competitive and made it all the more fun

I played a character most of the time

Not everyone is into that stuff but I think it was more popular back then

I certainly enjoyed it. It was a big reason why I got into guilds, as I saw it as the only active RP community on Wynn

It definitely provided an outlet for roleplay in a setting that was actually tangible. Sure, they were block squares, but it wasn’t entirely make belief and there were mechanics behind it. All the more better

At least for me. At the end of the day, they are just territories in-game, but the value was the RP it simulated. Hence why I never liked the “they are just block squares” argument personally. It was more about the roleplay.

Certainly, yes. That’s why I liked the RP aspect. You could definitely be competitive and play a character and have “enemies” so to speak. I feel like toxicity mainly came from when things were said or done outside of a roleplay context.

Some people were absolutely brilliant in playing a more villainous role. And they didn’t come across as a douche bag or a bad person. They were playing a character. It’s roleplay. It was only deep if you made it deep or weren’t role playing.

Someone I will shout out is Cath, absolutely brilliant in how they executed the various roles they played throughout the political climate over a good span of time.

But good roleplay constantly evolved as roles change. “Political enemies” in a mere moment became “allies” and everyone took on a new arch.

Alliances rose and fell. People fighting each other on and off for months with RP animosity were suddenly friends in an ever changing political climate.

I think RP provided a cushion where distinct enemies became rather favorable to each other politically due to changing conditions.

Of course not all guilds came at it with a roleplay perspective, which is fine (tho historically RP was what drove guild politics), lot of players played the game simply for the mechanics that existed which is normal. I do believe that in this era tho there was definitely a huge base for RP especially considering that the largest guilds at the time subscribed to this pattern and so a lot in the community followed suit and their hierarchies were also RP oriented.

Demographics changed throughout the years and RP became less prevalent. A lot of the staple RP players also left, which slowly led to my own inactivity. Wynncraft as a game itself is still very fun though and I still hop on to see the features now and then.
