I think what made guild politics more interesting back then is that within mega alliances there were individual guilds as well as smaller alliances, like Valkyrie and Aesir, which protected in a way their own interests (that being said, also the mega alliances for their own sake) but there were various factions within a mega alliances and independents all brewing for a very interesting time.
