Using AI for placeholder art seems like a terrible idea since the purpose of placeholder art is to give the idea of the intended look while still obviously needing to be updated, and if you use AI then it's not as obviously unpolished meaning the assets can slip through into the full release as they did here, whereas something like a plain monochrome rectangle still works great as a placeholder while being extremely easy to catch even at a glance.

Just to clarify, I’m not defending AI, I hate it.

It was just an unfortunate coincidence that even though the AI placeholder art was pointed out a week after release (release was like Q2 of this year?), allegations only arouse around the time of The Game Awards.

AI had no stake in Clair Obscure’s writing, soundtrack, or voice acting. I love the game and it’s why I felt compelled to defend it based on a clickbaity twitter post.

Thinking about it further.

The reasoning as to why the game would have those placeholders may have been a part of the game development process.

In order for games to get people willing to fund them, they are able to showcase a minor section of the game to a potential benefactor to try and convince them to fund the project. Seeing as the AI posters were in Lumiere, the beginning of the game, it may have happened due to a dev needing to place something in that spot that wasn’t a grey square placeholder. The posters were unintelligible anyway but it would have made a bad impression on any investor at seeing a grey splotch. I understand why they would use AI in that case and why they forgot about it until someone pointed it out.
