scrolls and food are buffs inaccessible without proffing and can make getting loot and xp easier or can give you pretty serious stat gains
specifically optimized armor and rings also can be specially designed around your weapon, which in some cases beats out loot gear

gather materials from ore/tree/crop/fish and ingredients from mobs. then craft with them
make sure you use ingredients!
it makes the xp WAY better.
youll be down there for AGES without them.
and keep an eye out for ingredients that increase Gathering XP - it'll let you improve at material collecting faster, which means less chance of accidentally ruining the material when you finish harvesting it, and a faster rate of harvest

Your life will be easier if you choose to socialize or trade but it is not necessary and frankly isnāt optimal a lot of the time until later levels
