I’d go with spells, ultimately they will be more useful than melee (your auto attack, I assume just clicking enemies, is called melee), and it does way less damage. There are builds designed for melee but those usually aren’t too useful till later on, melee is fine to clean things up and such, but spells are generally better

Yeah when you spam spells the cost goes up gradually, you can’t spam all the time or else you’ll run out of mana so “spam” is really short bursts, the idea is to have high mana regen (which is why effervescence is better) cause it helps offset the cost

You can do what is called spell cycle where if you are spamming a spell, and the cost goes up, you can switch to another spell to reset the cost then go back
