it first off isn't the current choice. people are on death row for years and decades before their executions, and the legal proceedings are incredibly expensive. it's between paying for their room and board and legal fees to justify their lack of right to life for a decade or two, or only paying for board for life. what you present aren't the two options

the long expensive legal proceedings before executions are necessary to reduce the likelihood of innocent people being executed, and innocent people have been executed. minimising those costs and time taken would increase likelihood of innocent executions, and once someone's dead you can't undo it

you can say some people deserve death and we shouldn't pay for them to live out their lives

I won't focus on money since it's a quite inhuman proxy, but our society can put time and work and resources towards those behaviours not happening. something happens between birth and harm committed which leads to it. the vast majority of focus should be on this, reducing the likelihood of crime in the first instance. this could be through reducing peoples' ability/opportunity to commit harm (more systemic), or inclination to (mental health services, education). jumping to focus on dealing with criminals, rather than focusing on harm prevention, is itself a waste of resources when what we really want is people not to be hurt.

If you follow the money in a society to see where it goes you can learn alot about the interests of different groups and their intentions.
