Why should i message them or wait till they are online?? I wish there was a button i could click and the chat would appear for me so i could send a message. The chat would not display an offline friend's chat unless you press the button. I can't see any downside to this.

Is not closing chat window not an option? if you pop out chat, you will see all people what you have chated and had not closed chat window with them
as there is limit of 50 friends ingame, list will not be long, so keeping chat windows not closed (pressed x mark) is not hard and you can send message at any point
