in the netherlands freight are always put between intercities and stoppers because
- we do not have the facilities for frequently starting and stopping freighttrains
- freight has a higher average speed than stoppers
I find I fuck them up a lot and manage to make them jam lots
me kale and zero have decided to go for a signal based slot system
the path is released based upon signal programming (time is xx)
and any train that is waiting can take that path
I have also used this occasionally with shared running
We have taken this quite far
I'm not gonna replan my stoppers
time based slots are quite easy and very reliable
its too late for that anyway
I've basically made a rule that I can't change passenger timetable
If it can't fit I'll make extra infra
you know how usually at big stations stoppers leave after ICs
freight should usually go in between because the average speed is between as well
On my map 2tph ic and 1tph stoppers is quite common
if you have lots of ruimte this is less of an issue
With the ics well spread
that leaves a nice gap
So I do them between the ICs when there's not a stopper

This happens for me, I get to the point where I split my time 50/50 between adjusting and tuning The City and everything else
I don't think I've often had massive problems with highly crowded long distance trains but I rarely do huge maps
When I get on big multiplayer games I do get highly overcrowded long distance services but I usually put that down to others just doing trains for eye candy and not bothering about demand
