imo kinda unfortunate you are missing out on the night trains, IMO they are one of the best bit of the italian train network
we are one of the few european countries which mostly kept their night trains

my personal tip is look for an availble seat on the app by trying to buy a ticket for your own train that's on the side of the sea (this does change after the ferry so if you have limited options and the train will get full later stick on the side of the hills in sicily, you will get really good views of mt. etna and the towns around Messina)

I bought the seat reservations at the station, where you can actually specify the exact seat you want so be sure to ask which place they're putting you on and if you can see the seat map Chris, and then loaded them in the Trenitalia app so that I couldn't lose them. And if you need to refund or change them I think you can also use the app for that then.
