#Ragins Train Sets
1 messages · Page 18 of 1
It wouldn’t really. You can do terrain detection and place them over a single tile elevation but you’re not gonna get an open underside like that
Shops and buildings etc work
Basically replace the foundation sprites
(I used to be royalexamination9410, just changed my name to Brentwood person after my name in another transportation related server)
We had a nickname theme of combining a route name+ person
I think I've got the tri-lights looking good, now I just need to do the rest of the variants
yee, that's probably what I'll end up doing, but that's a future problem
🤔
kinda look big and goofy in game, but this is really the best I can do tbh
also the aspects aren't necessarily accurate, but I've done them this way more for consistency
altogether it's a good mix

be really useful if I could put badges or something in the selection menu
it'd make it clearer at a glance
i'd kill for dwarf position lights, but normal ones are a godsend
they're on the todo list, but I wanna work on other things for the time being
Comet III's :3
might make the front more orange tbh
darkening it up makes it look a lot better
neat
Comet 3, 4 and 5s done
gonna need some more tweaking, but we'll see
rn the Comet III/IV non-driving coaches are identical, so I might change that, or just remove the Comet IV non-driving coaches, but we'll see
but yh, that also means most of the commuter coaches I plan on doing are complete
today's coaches done
ploughed my way through a bunch of 1930s/1940s era intercity coaches, and now I've got a few most post war ones I wanna do and then that roster is mostly complete too
stert with PRR coaches maybe?
These were mostly standardised
Most of the PRR specific coaches are lumped in with other stuff
but the only ones that are in game atm are the P70s
I do also want to do the P85s, but they're a future focus
Mmm position lights
Maybe if you scrunch the lights together by 1 pixel?
Are all the separate colors your previewing different companies?
you can set colours per group within the same company
I tried it, but I wasn't a fan
Its another one where 2x2 looks too big, but 1x1 is too small
extrazoom but only to mess around with where you put the bigger blocks :3
Same company, with different groups
Tbh that would be an option, but I'm lazy, and idek if that would look good
Future me problem then
gonna need Amtrak/Via liveries, but the Amtrka Heritage fleet cars are good to go
and they're visually distinct enough to work for me
they are rather different arent they, now that mine is coded in
(i will redraw it one day)
Tbf ours are different scales
But yours is really good
Tbh i forgot I drew rhe ef class
Canada seems so cool, I wish it was real 🙁
but yh, making my way through intercity cars
rn I've got three single deckers left, those being the Horizons, Viewliners, and Ventures
The roster is growing well imo 🙂
style is nice
well your work is the largest influence 🙂
Would you ever do the nightstar coaches they have
You could also add these
They are British Rail Mark 4 coaches VIA Rail acquired from a cancelled rail service
We call these the Renaissance fleet
rapidos done, now maybe type M500?
these are not the only european rolling stock that ended up in Canada
BR628 MU
Talbot Talent MU
LINT MU
Some other passenger coaches
They're on the list (albeit low priority) 🙂
horizon driving trailer? 🤔
horizons done, they go hard imo
I wonder why the Charger in 2cc trains is this weird HHP-8 thing?
That was drawn before the real Charger even existed lol
it's a total guess to what it would look like
I didn't even know there was a GRF that had a Charger
Tbf if the Charger was dual cab it would be really close
dual cab is superior compared to single cab
Imo, I think dual cab only works for electric locomotives. I don't really like the look of dual cab diesels
Well, except for the Class 66 and 68
Ah fair, its still interesting
Only in some circumstances
"I forsee an entertaining debate"
In Poland, yes
Viewliners done 🙂
Going to love using them with amfleets
you can be so amtrak pilled
Ooo wagons
What’s the rapido based off of?
I’ll need someone to see how my stuff looks like with ragin wagons
They are American wagons tbf
I’m not at my pc to check
Yeah but some stuff may look good
CN's rapido coaches
they're pretty cool tbh
They remind me of sbb ones
The livery i mean
What’s your goal with this set now?
I know before you were doing like a generic thing like horse
But it’s giving more realistic vibes now
basically a NARS replacement now
so real trains, but with company colour liveries
So what I’m doing but for ANZAC?
well for Australian/New zealand and North America
ANZAC is the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp
OH
I thought it meant Australia New Zealand America and Canada
no 🙂
lmao
if it does, that's the first time I've heard of it
You’re probably right
tbf, my north american stuff also covers mexico too, I've just not done a lot of mexican stuff so far
ANZAC absolutely has nothing to do with US and Canada
Except maybe us being used as cannon fodder for them 😔
But mostly as cannon fodder for the British
The pacer prototype also went to North America
I kinda wonder
If you do your thing
And i do mine
Will this scratch andys itch for moose and ibex?
We’re both taking a more real approach but i think a lot of what is good about horse will be in both sets
tbf there's an XPT in the set
Ahh true
Amtrak did enquire about buying them from Comeng, alongside CT22 bogies to replace their Pioneer IIIs under Amfleets, but it never happened
idk if I wanna include the pacer tbh, I suppose I should, but also it'd feel super out of place
No worries
Here’s my photos of them
Might be the same unit I’m not sure
Says LEV 1
but that’s not a maglev
the SEPTA one seems to be only a single unit?
The one i showed is
This is though
I know a website about the pacer prototypes
I’ll find it when I’m next on my pc
easy
thanks!
Ragin is among the best active artists rn xd
Ah cool
Did you know the infamous Class 142 Pacer once made a transatlantic journey? In this episode, we dive into the story of 142049’s trip to Canada for Expo 86. Discover how this iconic British train was showcased at the World Fair, tested on BC Rail, and why its time in Canada was short lived. Join us on this international rail adventure!
A set was demonstrated in Vancouver for expo 86
Found on Google from x.com
At Pacific central station
I was referring to the prototype, didn’t know an actual railbus went there
Did you just paint those as CC1 and CC2?
Yee, thats what it looks like with CC1: Blue and CC2:Red
Noice
Dual cabs are beautiful
Gave out rides to locals
But it wasn’t really accessible so didn’t take off
Hi-levels done
Ooh, does it include the transition car?
Neat!
Should be a fairly simple switch to detect the ID of the vehicle in front of it
If it's a single decker car, make it a transition car
I suppose, but then I'd need to make a list of all other single deck cars and put it in that switch
and tbh I don't think it's that noticeable or neccesary
it's not that noticeable here tbh
Badges
Badge for double deck
Test for the badge in the switch
okay I might look into that in future then
Literally one of the main use cases of badges
well I'll keep that in mind for future then :3
I forget about badges, haven't used them yet 😛
badger badger badger
I honestly think Badges stand to be truly transformational to OTTD once fully utilised
I have utilised them unfully
some badgers
no more big hole?
yes I've holed enough today
i think I might go ride around on a lime scooter
nyoom
I want to ride on a pacer... to get why british people hate pacer
TL;DR bouncy, low quality interior, noisy
equivalent to a local bus for short journeys
much worse than a coach for long journeys
The reason they’re so cheap is what saved a bunch of branch lines from closing
maybe
it's not clear that they were wildly cheaper than e.g. class 150 sprinters
but they were percieved politically as cheaper, so the investment was authorised
a lot of the use was in relatively intensive (frequency, not loading) urban service
Soupliner done
California Car done
so aaaaaaa
that's all the passenger cars I wanna do
I wanna do the Ventures, but I'll need to sus out how to do them first
oh yh, that's the plan, but it's more the driving trailers/Amtrak midwest versions
most have two doors, while the Amtrak midwest versions only have a single, but it's easy enough to do them all with two doors
I vote for all two doors, making two separate versions seems a bit faffy
but there's also three different versions of the driving trailer...
but that's a lot of work, so I might leave it for later
but when i get to do it, I'll do the chargers and ventures altogether
I think what I might do a ctually, is code the Via and brightline chargers/ventures as push-pull train sets, so they'll go in the MU set
while the Amtrak ones will just be conventional locomotive hauled stock?
idea, 1980s NE corridor double decker?
rn all the double deck intercity stuff is very much west of the missippi
so it'd be cool to have something more suited to the eastern US
only doing a basic draft, but it's not exactly screaming "80s Budd"
but it's a draft to come back to at a later date
might make the roof flatter tbh, otherwise it looks too much like a multilevel
Amtrak doesn’t have double decker equipment in the eastern us?
Surprised they don’t since more of their ridership is based there
nope, it's all single deck
Hmm
Wonder if it’s because of low overpasses on older tracks or electric wires limiting overall height?
I think it's because there weren't any offerings tbh
when NJT and the LIRR went to buy new cars in the late 80s, there weren't any on the market, and the only considered them because Comeng suggested them
the NE loading gauge can do double deck stock, it's just no one really considered it prior to the 90s
Australian made double decker cars by comeng?
yee, that was the plan, but it fell through for a variety of reasons
Would be fun to recreate in game
well the C1 comeng cars are in the set atm
Like how I Ioad your Oceania set alongside the North American sets in games
yee, although where applicable, I'll include Americanised versions
there really aren't many tbh
the only ones are the C1s (which actually got built), XPTs (Which Amtrak enquired about, but never bought any), and the V-Sets (which the LIRR enquired about buying to test, but the SRA said no)
I know, that You are not making subways now
But Toroto Subway had some nice units
and maintanaince stock made in Japan
All the Toronto revenue stock is already in the most rapid transit pack release
Uh, clearance is definitely the reason, the issue is the tunnels in NYC. The NJT multilevel completely fills the clearance envelope — even the similar-looking MBTA bilevels wouldn’t fit.
Oh interesting, i thought they were identical
Mostly because of clearances
NJT's MLV cars are specifically designed to fit in the hundred year old Hudson Tunnels into Penn Station (iirc MARC also has a few of these)
The MBTA have a different bilevel coach, but they don't have to worry about tunnel clearances so they're taller
And there's exo in Montreal that uses the same models of rolling stock as NJT lol
SD9 done
still a bit iffy with doing hood units in this style, but I think this is a good first attempt
gonna work through some more hood units in the coming days
that's pretty much the plan :)))))
I've got a bunch of different parts I can cobble together now, so I could easily smash through most of the EMD line
also I might include a toggle to remove some of the extra locomotives
rn, most hood locomotives have all the cab variants, but that might be a lot for some people
also I know the GP7/SD7 were originally delivered to operate long hood forward, so I could include some code to have them be long hood for a year or two, then switch to short hood? 🤔
spell 'completionist' for me?
look, getting addicted to drawing trains is probably not the worst thing ever
Just Ctrl+Click reverse? That way you can play as the railroads that kept running long hood first for years, or put some backwards in a multi-unit consist, or run a single engine backwards on a local train?
I know, but it might be nice to have that represented too
but it's just an idea anyway
yoooooo looks good
SD7 done, basically the same as the SD9, but with a different ass end
I think that's meant to be a maine boxcar?
but I'm fine with representing the LGBTS community
I found another oddball for future consideration https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingalls_4-S
The Ingalls 4-S was an experimental American locomotive built by Ingalls Shipbuilding immediately after World War II. Intended as the first of many Ingalls-built locomotives, it was the only one the company built. It served on the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad (GM&O) until it was retired in 1966; it was scrapped the following year.
oh yh
I've already got all of Ingalls roster on the list 🙂
including the proposed passegner and switcher locomotives, they didn't even get a prototype
damn, you're always two steps ahead 😅
I do my research 🙂
SD35 done, shamelessly stealing another NARS livery
Great progress!
yessssss
thanks!
gonna write the lit review for my thesis, and try and do the SD40s afterwards
Sounds like a good reward (for you and us)
:)
also tangentially, I need to do more baldwin locomotives
they all had inline engines with giant bores/strokes
and I think that's funny
I had dinner tonight on the site of the old Baldwin locomotive works. It’s all expensive apartments, bars, and offices nowadays
that's how it is unfortunatley
I live near the old Comeng and Clyde engineering factories, and both are just boring industrial parks now
at least they're still making things there
Their diesels are so… square
yeah, but that makes them easy to draw 🙂
the guys at Baldwin would have loved minecrafts create mod
oooh
also it's wild that there was another Norfolk southern, before the current one
and it then got merged into the modern NS lmao
Shame they didn't go back to that livery, NS black is so boring
Don’t worry, they’ll all be yellow soon 😛
Heheh I designed the interpretive panel in this photo when I worked there
I think it has its charm, but yh, it's boring
ooooh, neat
is that an AS616 or something btw?
Er, I forget
The BLH AS-416 was a diesel-electric locomotive of the road switcher type rated at 1,625 hp (1,212 kW), that rode on three-axle trucks, having an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement.
Used in much the same manner as its four-axle counterpart, the AS-16, though the wheel arrangement spread out the axle load for operation on light rail such as are found on b...
4 powered axles
so yh, slightly different model
I was wondering why I couldn't find it in my list
Huh they did have a four-axle version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_AS-16
The BLH AS-16 was a diesel-electric locomotive rated at 1,625 hp (1,212 kW), that rode on two-axle trucks, having a B-B wheel arrangement. It was the successor to Baldwin's DRS-4-4-1500 model, and remained in production until Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton quit the locomotive manufacturing business in 1956.
Nine railroads bought 127 locomotives, with fi...
I put most stuff like this in the light freght roster
ooooh
thankfully it's in the list too
Are you doing the Centipede?
yee, but it's not an immediate priority
yeah, maybe that's why they died
also, I wonder why in NARS they gave the DT 6-6-2000 a pointy EMD style nose?
the irl locomotives aren't flat?
It's NARS Addon, not NARS
most NARS Addon graphics were kitbashed or scrounged together from other sets
SD40s done aaaaaaaaaaa
retweaking my dual-mode SD40 code was a hassle, but it's good to go for other stuff in future
also this technichally means I have all the locomotives in the original version I posted to bananas
still haven't got more than the base liveries done, but that's a future problem
god JP+ roads look so good
I should steal some of these sprites for an American or Australian road set maybe 🤔
fyi the bottom heads never displayed a "stop" aspect.
Yee, that was partially intentional
It allows for more variety in aspects
Although I'm open to changing it to something more accurate
Oh btw, gonna work on more locomotives tonight, so requests welcome
I'm either gonna do the SD24 or SD50 series, or move to do the GP series
Just not sure which ones tho
Could also do one of the catalogued, but not built EMDs
SD30 maybe?
Would love to see you make a dual mode version of the SD40 wide cab variant
Could make a carriage
Thats yellow motorbike with a black man driving it
And a fat black man wearing green as his passenger
To be put at the end of trains
I could, but it might be a bit much
Whyyyy???
:////
Maybe a 70-ton switcher?
Maybe
I'll consider it, but I'm trying to focus on mainline stuff atm
got distracted by thesis work, so probably no new trains tonight
but I got my viability anlysis done, and you guys might find it interesting
here are the top gravity scores for SA3s in sydney, and their corresponding rail services
it's interesting how there are many areas that show high viability, but have no rail services
it's also funny, but the most viable corridor is the Northern Beaches line
which was in the back of my head, I was thinking might be up there, but I didn't realise it'd be that viable lmao
it doesn't have one 🙁
I'm only doing it for my masters of planning anyway, so it's not gonna get published
Aw
but it's on creating a gravity model to assess potential transport corridors
and I'm comparing it against the existing rail network, and proposed rail network under future transport 2056
Are you taking civil engineering?
nope, urban planning
Fantastic work there
thanks!
I lied, SD50 done
also did a high hood variant, even though I don't think any were built?
yoooooooooo
How late do you plan on doing high hood versions? NS bought Dash 9s with low noses when everyone else was buying wide cabs. It would be fun to see a high-nose Dash 9 if GE let them buy one 😛
why would you say that >:/
I guess I'm doing it until the Dash-9 generation now
I was planning on stopping at the SD50 generation
oh wait, nvm, I thought you said they ordered high hoods
Will you do sharknoses?
last high nose locomotive on my list is the SD60 for some reason, after that it's low noses only
Those looked impractical but just asking
yee, of course :3
RF-16 is on my priority list too, so I'll do it soon
yee, an indian set would be really cool
doing more research, seems the last locomotive delivered with a high hood was the B36-7, so that frees up a fair few ids
I agree
You guys can stop me
But I know you wont
once my north american stuff is more complete, I'm gonna have to get a NA scenario for it 🤔
could tweak Nekomasters one
or... try and see if making a larger 8k one would be possible
Avro Vulcan??
Thats a plane?
you said avro
maybe lancaster?
still, i do think that the best name in the history of british aerospace industry was the WHIRLWIND
channel hijack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAoLJkiRuGY
For licensing / usage, please contact [email protected] Filmed at Weston Super Mare in Somerset, UK. June 2014 Air Festival.
The Avro Vulcan was a 'cold war' Bomber used by the RAF. The plane was the backbone of the UK's airborne nuclear deterrent during that period. Thankfully, its Nuclear capabilities were never used.
The Vulcan co...
turn it up
Arvo >:/
They're so cool
I was there
it's spine chilling
hmm none of the videos on YT are as good as the one I have 😛
spiral climb
Us yanks call it the "afternoon"
I still think our old F-111s are cooler tho 😛
And this is why Australia is better 😎
SD60s are so annoying, since they're so similar to the earlier SD50
either way, I think this cover this style of cab pretty well
hopefully this weekend I can run through and do the other locomotives with this cab too
tbh, I really wanna get to stuff like the SDP35/40/45 and the SD70MACH because imaging them with gallery cars tickles my brain for some reason
wasnt this cabine design used also in cab units for BN and CN?
SD60s done :3
:ε
You've drawn every American freight diesel since 1990
they're all Dash 9 to me 😅
Looks like You also played MSTS?
A long time ago lol
And soon I will do it too
There is a WIP sprite in the horse repo with a GE style wide cab
So I could probably copy that tbh...
is there? 😄
all the things I've drawn 😛
think you've nailed it 😛
It was on your moose test sheet iirc
I'll find it tonight
I really should start doing the F45s...
Well the code does allow you to do goofy stuff like that 🙂
Oh also, does anyone have any suggestions for how to do a BNSF livery?
The yellow/orange in Newcc doesn't contrast that well against each other, so thats a dud
Case and point
Although that one is meant to be the chessie, but its the same combo
But yh, I really wanna include a BNSF livery, I'm just a little stumped on it
I think a B unit of the F45 and FP45 would be pretty cool
I'll consider it then...
is that not in helper service? 😮
BNSF pumpkin will be quite hard in the available oranges
the orange is probably possible
but I think it will be hard to make it pop
Yeah, and thats the problem I have
I'd probably mute the main orange down to this pinky orange
then rely on the black, and some yellow for contrast
Yeah, but the problem is I have to rely on company colours which I can't really tweak myself
these are colour blends really
Maybe having a higher contrast yellow would be a good idea?
you can break any of you own rules you have about CC
you can just draw trains in fixed colours, totally permissible
I know, but I also don't wanna be too restrictive
I wanna try and use CC where possible
But I'm not opposed to it
Ie these SD40s, the wide cab ones only use CC1 for the cab, the rest is fixed
Alt history, BNSF never happened, Santa Fe forever 😛
Sure :333
Tbf both the ATSF liveries are in my list anyway
So theoretically a player could do it
Just doing some reading on my break, and turns out the Alaska railroad bought 12 SD70MACs with HEP that were delivered in 1993
Seemingly, it would be justifiable to identify them as SD70MACH, same as the metra units
So should I introduce them in 1993 (when Alaska got them) or 2023 (when metra did)
Both sprited would be identical, and they'd serve the same gameplay purpose
Also I might include a sub roster for just rebuilds? Because theres a lot of weird goofy ones
just one question
WHY the yanks are alergic to 2 cab diesels?
1 cab is cheap
and hood units don't need a second cab
also they tend to operate diesels back to back
yes, but I am talking about full-body width locos
2nd cab adds cost, and they operate them back to back regardless
still, that photo is weird
also it's just preference, sometimes it doesn't need to be logical
cultural thing, just as not having an logical numbering scheme
while some american railways number thair locos according to type or horsepower
most just slap random numbers
just look at UP roaster
no, they generally number them into blocks based on the order
e.g. UP numbering SD70MACs in the 4000-4999 range
generally yes, but not all the time
generally some types do not form uniform blocks
yh, but those are often for one offs, or a result of legacy issues (ie older locomotives being retired and the numbers being re-used)
and blocks not always starts with 00 or at least an single 0
and dont evan start to talk about locos with special paintjobs...
As thay tend to be given special numbers which smashes the system
yeah, but having a consistent numbering system isn't important
it is
I really like the idea of hertige units
but I do not like 2 things
- weird numbers
- designations of companies that do not exist anymore
thay could use thair own actual designation, but with paintjob of an defucent company
fair enough I suppose
SD70s done
gonna get onto the SD70MAC now
might do it in a BNSF livery since it'll be only one locomotive, and that makes experimenting easier
NARS Add on did the SD70ACe in a BNSF livery, and it doesn't look toooo bad
I think the issue is just with the orange in Newcc being too bright
I kinda have an idea on how to deal with it, so let's see how it goes
Thin bodies allow for ease of access to the engine
kinda works?
I think this is the best I can really do tbh
gonna retweak the cab side view since it doesn't look correct imo
indeed,
Also are great for shunting
really really nice
if only we had another orange company colour to choose (darker)
is the orange CC?
yee
I'd consider forcing the pixels for the running board
or the lowest pixel of the hood body
just create contrast between the orange body and the yellow frame
I tried that, it didnt contrast that well
the big BNSF units have silver trucks and fuel tank
I think that doesn't work in OpenTTD though
yeah, unless I do a specific silver frame, and I cbf
😛
dunno, I think your sprite works well, I just like to try and make things pop more
maybe the nose mostly
some of the BNSF schemes have a warbonnet nose
yeah, I tried that
I'm gonna experiment more
I also wanna try and get the cab to look a little better
so I'm gonna work on that before bed
tweaked it a bit, and it looks better imo (top is new)
also shortened the Spartan cab nose so they match
I think it looks nicer
gonna have to go back and fix some of the earlier generations though 🫠
I'll probably only do the SD50/SD60 generations though
SD40s and earlier had big noses
tbh I think the longer noses look better on the SD40s and the like, so I might just update the SD60s?
or I could just leave them
nah, I'll touch up the SD60s, they had the same cabs as the later SD70s
little bit better imo
but yh, bedtime now, tomorrows job is gonna be the SD70ACe (Hopefully)
also I'm probably gonna put the SD70MACH intro as 1993
litterally no mixed traffic locomotives in the 90s, so it makes sense lmao
legit there's very little difference between these two, so it'd make sense to combine them
slightly different greebles in the rear, but otherwise identical
I'm guessing that's a result of different HEP generators
What on earth is that loco at the bottom
I support the earlier MACH introduction. Makes more sense for an alt-history set than restricting it to the later rebuild.
You’ve got me thinking about an Alaska game now 👀
i think we'd need flag stops for that lol
Are you gonna do the SD60M with the triclops cab?
There's also the SD60MAC which was a demonstrator model for AC traction which shares the same triclops design
So if you do think about doing the triclops cabs, you could just have all the SD60s with this cab design be SD60MACs
Although, the triclops cab design came before the later cab design and the SD60MACs
The triclops looks cool but I'm not sure how visible it would be in a diagonal sprite
Well, since the F59PH also has the triclops cab design and theres a F59PH in the NARS add-on set, that can be used to get an idea of how to make the cab
@strange quiver Are your sprites on github? Point me at your most stereotypical US locomotive (One of those orange BNSF ones or something?)
Some fictional thing I found, probably won't include it tho
Easy
Nah, its basically the same at this scale tbh
Yee, they are, someone else might have to link you as I'm on my phone atm tho
Also I might include the SD60MAC, but we'll see...
Check out the pins on this thread for the link to the GitHub
Oh yh, I did pin it 🫠
did a sneaky today (worked on my thesis at work)
so I can spend all of this arvo on trains 🙂
smart strategy. Goofing off work so you can work on your thesis? Cheeky, but still admirable. Scholarly. Seen as respectable by old manager people. Goofing off work so you can draw tiny trains for a video game? Weird. Not respected. Gets you called into old managers office to get your ass kicked.
exactly 🙂
just don't tell sky news though
"council worker found not doing much work at work"
Just don't tell them you then go home and draw the tiny trains instead of working on your thesis more.
exactly 🙂
That might get you into strife.
tbf, the only task I had to do today was write a letter about a voluntary planning agreement we're working on
so it's not like I'm behind on anything
and I only spent like 20 mins on my thesis otherwise lmao
yeah my work today was hardly stressful
that can also be bad though, since you then have to pretend to be busy lmao
not really? work culture in a big corporation is very different from the work culture where I used to work
where I used to work absolutely
but here it's like 'i don't feel like I'm doing enough' and then people telling me to slow down and don't try and fix everything overnight
lmao
tbf I'm like that too, it's just work at council rn is slow
or at least there's not much work for a student planner
mostly because I spent the last twenty years getting the shit kicked out of me doing the work of five people
so my expectations are very skewed
when I was working in development assessment, the only feedback I got on my probation is that I need to rest more and take more leave 💀
that'd do it :/
like yesterday I sat around for two hours, replaced a power supply, drove back into town, rode an e-scooter from my house to the office in the CBD, dropped off a box of 2nd hand fibre modules for someone, rode a scooter back home, sat in aircon for the afternoon chatting on webex and did like, one video call
and got absolutely glazed by half a dozen different people for helping
sounds fun
tbh I kinda wish I had a more hands on job, I'm not suited to fixing things, but it's nice to not have to constantly think all the time lmao
also looking to do the SD60MACs, and they're slightly different to the SD60Ms >:////
SD60MACs done
now this is one really strange GO transit train...
Probably because it’s Burlington northern…
SD70ACe done :3
SD89MAC, in case you want something to not buy
looks heinous, can't wait to buy one
fucked up 🙁
also looking at the roster, there's enough freight locomotives for a release imo, since there's at least basic coverage of everything
but... I do obviously want to include more content before releasing
I think this weekend, I might work on some non hood locomotives, since I want to sit on them for a bit and return with fresh eyes
so I might do the F59s?
also I might touch up some of the older locomotives I drew, now that I have more experience with american locomotives
Well, EMD locos at least
yee, GEs and ALCOs will be soon 🙂
RS3 when ❤️
it's on the priority list 🙂
especially since I have the ORP RSC-3 to use as a reference
Yea
Do plan to group these as variants? Ie, put all the cab/nose variations of the same loco together?
Probably not
when I did the SD40s originally, I had them grouped as: Parent > Cab Variant > Livery
and I found it just too clunky
I think having them separate is probably the better way to do it, but I'm open to suggestions
I liked the way you did it before 🙂
I'll think about changing it then, but I'm already pretty set on this way tbh
all good
if it gets overwhelming with lots of locomotives, it's not a big deal to change it
ya know
variants are good
but if you haven't tried Horse livery badges in OpenTTD beta with badge filtering ....
then you haven't seen the future
well it's something I do wanna do at some point...
yeah, I'm gonna need to do that tbh
LIRR DE/DM30ACs done
🤔
i can go to montauk with this
.... Downeaster Alexa
nicked a locomotive from Cities skylines :3
basically it's a more powerful/expensive version of this
or at least, that's how I'm balancing this, since it's fictional
Isn’t that just a PL42AC in C:S?
@strange quiver about the North American roads you mentioned earlier, would be cool to see stroads like these represented as well as freeways with North American style markings
Many roads in suburban areas are like this, the area between the yellow lines allows for turns and separates opposing traffic
Usually a 60 km/h speed limit
Typical freeway scene in North America
Yellow line on the left, white line on the right
Basically an American reskin of JP+ Roads 😅
The suburban stroads almost always have overhead power lines following them, providing power to the businesses along them
That's a common sight in Australia too
I use the ultimate constructor for JP+ roads, so repaint should be actually very easy
So steal it and make "international" roads as I won't do those 😛
Yeah, but with a pantograph :3
Can do :3
also, thesis update, it's 34 pages 💀
gotta write the reference list and she's done
then one more assignment and I can dedicate more time to openttd 🙂
oh yh, wanted to spend today vibing, but a friend made to go to the model show down the road, and I spent too much money 💀
I suppose I've got more info when I loop back to Australian stuff tho
oh actually, that reminds me, I should mark the american stuff that can go in the australian set as priority
update your github farkin' 😛
lol, all good, I'm about to get spanked by a massive thunderstorm here, trying to work out whether I need to stick the car under the house before the hail hits lol
hopefully it's not too bad lmao
probably a good idea tbh...
yeah this ones pretty crunchy, first 'big' storm since moving up here. Can hear some absolute corker hale stones hitting the roof and the walls
definitely glad I got the car under cover
lmao
yeah, I could imagine it'd cause some damage lmao
yeah theres fist sized chunks of hale in my front and back yards lmao
show us
eh they've melted now
aww
more like golf ball sized
ive never seen hale bigger than like pea size tbh
well, I live in the tropics now lmao
I don't have a transition
but the F59PHs are done
I had a goober moment and originally drew them on the 8 template so aaaa
I suppose if I ever need a big F59, I've got that now
also new commit @turbid bronze
go have fun 🙂
yeah, but we need some DMUs 🙂
Are there any in US?
not many recent ones
but there were the colorado railcar ones, which these were based on
otherwise there really aren't many MUs in the US at all
Don't know much about Canada
Same with the rest of the Americas
Brazil used to have an okish railway network
now mostly freight
Cuba has a good network
I believe Mexico is decent as well
yee, they have lots
but for this set, I'm only covering the US, Canada and Mexico
those other countries will be in another, future set
Great.
I will stick to India in my set
though I might draw stuff for PK/BD later on
Burma is ex JP stuff afaik
same ish situation like Indonesia
....unless I get contributors for the other two aforementioned countries
Afghanistan,Nepal and Bhutan don't have railways afaik
yee, at least not modern ones
yee, it'd be cool to have an indian set
it's on my radar to, but as a long, long term project
It's in perennial development hell
I have a lot of trains I want to do before then first
Yep, mine too
I will make time for dev work
Was very busy ( frankly lost interest in the game for a while)
I have drawn two trains till now
Will finish the diesel roster
well best of luck
and if you ever need any advice/help, feel free to ask
I've drawn too many trains, so I know a thing or two lmao
tbf, its the same principles tho
I know that it is not strictly american
But the nipphon shayro MU operating in Califormia and Canada?
there is also an walk-through version
wait an moment, thay did this too
and this
and a lot of other things
Big in Japan plays in the background
that one is already in NARS so there's precedent to include it.
Isn't Tony's NAPR mostly just filled with multiple units ?
It's quite good
I need to play an American themed game soon
also i'm watching a vid on the 2foot sugarcane trains running in northern queensland. I need to get up there one day once stuff stabilises at work.
always wanted to explore more of queensland and I guess I live here now 🤣
of course, they operate in North America
I don't have a rule about country of origin
and it looks like I stuffed up that PR with the .gitignore file as you're gobbling up the nmlcache every commit you make lately. I'll try and fix that. Should make your syncs a looooooot quicker.
yeah i did when I was reading your commits and going 'this is fucking useless'
with the gitignore setup properly you should just be able to easily read a commit on github and see what changed
like at a glance
fair fair
not really a you problem but makes it hard for other people to see what you've been up to
also, tangent, but on the weekend I bought the data sheet for NSW RU and BWH wheat wagons, finally hung it up on my wall
I'm so cool 🙂
yh, fair enough, so still worthwhile sorting out
Would be cool
But when I get around to interurbans, I'm only doing them as standard gauge
Imo adding gauge complexity doesn't add too much gameplay wise (with exceptions to some narrow gauge stuff)
Tbh some of that stuff in TTD terms at least would be better coded as a tram.
That too
Although the heavier interurban stuff I wanna do as trains
Because I don't like duplication 🙁
D:
Could just wrap it in a parameter
I’m personally of the opinion a lot of that metro’ish interurban stuff should probably be coded as road vehicles.
I suppose
But for me, I think if its more railway like, it should be a railway, if its more tram like, it should be a tram
I'd like to see stuff like the Electroliner
or the interurbans that used to cross the Oakland Bay bridge
The East Bay Electric Lines were a unit of the Southern Pacific Railroad that operated electric interurban-type trains in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. Beginning in 1862, the SP and its predecessors operated local steam-drawn ferry-train passenger service in the East Bay on an expanding system of lines, but in 1902 the Key S...
Yee, they'll be in the rapid transit pack 🙂
should LA Metro light rail be classified as tram or train? we may never know
Its in the train category for me
The rule for me, is if it mostly operates on its on ROW, and is floor, probably a train
It falls into the category of "light metro" for me
The British Rail Class 399 Citylink is a type of rail vehicle built by Vossloh on its Citylink platform for operation by South Yorkshire Supertram. Primarily a low-floor tram, it is also capable of being used on the National Rail network; the Class 399 is the first such tram-train to see operational use in the United Kingdom.
In 2013, an order w...
What about this?
The RegioSprinter is a German diesel railcar built by Siemens-Duewag for rapid regional railway services. Originally the RegioSprinter was designated as a Regional Combustion-engined Railbus (Regional-Verbrennungstriebwagen or RVT) by Duewag.
Developed as prototypes for fast regional railway services on the plains, the RegioSprinter still has th...
Or this? c:
They're in that blurry area
It'd come down to the set I suppose
But I'd do probably code them as trams
I’d have them as both xd
Valid, there's no rule on how to do it anyway
For me it's mostly a matter of, if it's mostly city/urban running, in cramped places (by OTTD standards), and typically a low-floor type of vehicle, then tram would be better in OTTD terms than a full blown train. Especially if it's only one or a couple of carriages long.
and likewise I think anything 2foot gauge should probably be coded as a road vehicle rather than a train. Existing examples of 600mm/2foot narrowguage in OTTD coded as trains just look daft IMO
even grade separation I think still works well with trams
Fair fair, I just prefer them to be trains because it looks better outside of city centres imo
Although when I get around to doing narrow gauge stuff, I'm gonna keep them as trains too
Although I won't specify a gauge, it'll just be "narrow gauge"
yeah nice flowing corners aren't really possible coding them as trams I will admit that makes them a bit unappealing as soon as you get out of an urban area
yee, and my interest is mostly how stuff like metros and suburban rail interacts with a wider rail network
so it's important to have those outter suburban bits
I've got a bachelors of planning, so I might as well use it 🙂
you fancy edumacated people
I spent 50k on my degree, I gotta use it somehow 🙂
thanks, although I'm just finishing up my masters now
literally one assignment left, and then I have a masters in planning too 🙂
ooooh, fun
I failed highschool! 😄
just had to spend twenty years working my ass off lmao
tbf, I did too, I was just lucky at getting into uni lmao
I dunno man, life is a better teacher than professors
yeah I never went to uni
for some reason, I got really bad depression when I was 14/15 lmao
I was about to fail in the equivalent of my school leaving exams
yeah life can't qualify you as an engineer or a doctor though
How I passed with decent results is still a mystery
Yeah, missed out on getting into an engineering college
Twice
Gave up
Decided I am going to torment engineers later on
as a college professor
Lol
though, actually technically i met all the prerequisites at one point to go for chartered engineer but I don't work in that particular sub field anymore.
meh, I make way more money now than most engineers doing my particular weird little niche, I'm not sad.
That's nice
I think I will either turn up to be an obnoxious banker
or an obnoxious college professor
Either way, being obnoxious and generally a prick seems constant
I generally am an okish person to talk to, perennially in physical pain
don't have to be the smartest person in the room but being pleasant, and competent goes a long way
I try isolating myself because my pain keeps on flaring up
me "none out of 3 ain't bad"
Oh well
I had undiagnosed chronic pain for at least 25 years, maybe lifelong
I had to make a lot of lifestyle changes to deal with chronic pain but I'm mostly OK now.
chronic pain takes a mental effect
some pain management talks about making a friend of the pain
A friend of pain?
most of it for me was changing my expectations.
Good idea
Maybe I will stop cursing my spine
and just accept it
that I probably have to give up on sports
....which means a lot to me ironically
Yeah I had to give up on martial arts and other life goals I had. That then led to massive weight gain which compounded the physical pain. Now I've gotten that back under control a lot of the pain has been relieved. Slowly building my strength and fitness up again but I know I won't be able to do everything I used to do.
the stock photos are terrible, but 'acceptance' https://www.paintoolkit.org/pain-tools
anyway, derailed the thread 😛
Oof
oof
Nvm the chat got depressing
Didn't mean for that last one to be depressing. Life goes on, and it does for the most part get better, but you do have to change your expectations of it slightly.
I agree.
Accepting limitations in some areas also freed up other hang-ups I had in other areas of my life that I didn't even consciously realize I had. Basically, in the immortal words of Trent from Punchy, 'just fucken relax aye'
yeah that's a shitter
total thread derail, but do you have physical therapy for scoliosis?
somewhat of a test, but the U25B is done
tbh, I'm stilly iffy about my hood units, but I think I'm getting better at it
took me a while to find a groove for them
yeah, and I have the benefit of once again copying your work 🙂
I used the Rockhampton/Hinterland as a reference for these, and it really helped
but it'll still take some getting used to
also it doesn't help that these were the first ones I drew 7/8
that's why you've gotta release it so I can steal
there's a few dimensions
- running gear height
- solebar (frame) height
- how much running plate to show
- cab side windows vertical position
- cab roof curve
move those around until it looks right 😛
yeah, that's pretty much what I do
it's just gonna be tweaking until I get the right idea
when I get around to doing liveries, I'm probably not gonna do any for the hood units until I'm more comfortable tbh
Personally, the Sacramento northern units
Looks very early 20th century
U Boot?
Whan I last time seen an train called an U-boot it looked a bit diffrent 😉
DAS ist einen U-boot
No, this is a U-boat
Deltics are also called u boats sometimes since they share the same engine as the actual boats
I just call them oil spillers though 😄
Get better soon Ragin!
Whoever came up with that is an idiot
Never used in a U-Boat
Once used in a captured WW2 E-Boat for testing, but literally one engine in one boat
They were used in patrol boats and minesweepers
Never
maybe he used an U-boot as an generic noun for any sub?
just as jeep for every lightweight cross country car
u boat*
first batch of Geeps
GEEP
GEEP
That’s a jeep, not a geep
not super
also, GO transit had some F units btw
although to my knowlage thay had thair traction motors removed and acted as generator vans with driving cabs
so goodstrain loco without heating was on the 2nd train end
Yee, I know, although I'll do them in future
the ids are reserved to allow the go transit liveries
is requirement for coach heating in OTTD an BAD FEATURE?
(so you need either an passenger loco or goodstrain loco+generator van combo for passenger trains)
In this video, I tackle the challenge of custom painting cast-off locomotives from my junk box to create an unlikely GO Transit passenger train - something that might exist in a dystopia if you were forced to assemble a passenger consist based on what you could find in a railway graveyard. I rescue two F40PHs and an F7 to create a double-headed,...
interesting vid
it could be interesting, but it's not something Im including
Yes it's a bad feature, dealing with it was annoying in old versions of NARS
fair fair
and it's an extra thing to code, that can break
and it'd require me to code extra versions of locomotives that are largely freight locomotives, but still worked passenger trains (e.g. SEMTA's GP9s)
I dunno
heating could be valid
probably more so than braking types, which I've considered and rejected many times 😛
badges for heating could be really quite easy
could work like restaurant cars
either the engine provides heat (as a badge), but don't nerf the HP, just make some game world assumptions
or add a heating van
would be bizarrely easy to parameterise on/off with badges alsp
whereas brakes....brr 😛
table 2 here 🙂 https://www.ltsv.com/w_ref_codes_tops.php
head-end power is introduced in China Set affecting a BAD FEATURE recognised by Andy (cargo aging)
warmer passengers pay more?
lol cargo aging, the feature for people who can't read charts
Comfortable passengers pay more
In Chinese settings sometimes the weather get too warm or too cold
That's common I think?
no, only china has weather
Chinese trains seem a bit cleaner than ours
Lol
My meaning was “air conditioning”
Yeah I got your point
AC used to be a luxury just about everywhere
till the late 00s
in India
1st class AC coupes
india is more advanced than the uk then lmao
Does most part of India need heating, though?
Depends where you are
Delhi in winters is quite cold
The hilly North
and the Himalayan places
