#Ragins Train Sets
1 messages · Page 14 of 1
it really is
Shame they got rid of their left-hand-door trolleybuses, “temporarily” using diesel buses until the battery bus magic bullet never comes along
Two-aspect distant signals for the ORP - Signals pack?
Probably not, I don't know what purpose they'd serve
Oooh, neat
Hey, is there any preview/beta version of this train set?
Which one? I have quite a few train sets atm
I tought it was just one train set which ones are there?
The main ones that are released are the Oceanian Rail Pack series
But other the North American Rail Pack - Rapid Transit recently got updated
mentioned it in #add-on-development, but I wanted to add the ability to toggle certain trains on and off
Thankfully, JP+ Private companies has a pretty simple system where I can just add a tag in the climate section of trains, so it should be pretty easy to retrofit that into my sets :3
I do wonder with this string, if it would be possible to have multiple parameters that do teh same thing
ie one that disables 3rd rail suburban trains, and then another to disable fictional/real/prototype trains
I think you can do it with || or operator
Oh? Do you have an example I could look at?
I don't use it but I think something like
(param1 == 0 || param2 == 0) ? ...
Could work
Aight, I'll give it a go when I'm home
If it does I'll post here
so that seems to work, kinda...
probably is I need it so if it's disabled by just one paramter, the train isn't available
but rn if it's disabled by one parameter, the other parameter makes it so it's still available
Ah then you need to use && instead of ||
works flawlessly :3
Nice
now I just need to retrofit that into all my other sets 💀
Time for basic booleans: || is ‘OR’ && is ‘AND’. If one OR the other is true return true. If one AND the other is true, return true.
Get it right and you can chain things and do some cool stuff.
neat 🙂
I'll try and keep it in mind, but I'm a coding idiot 😦
I'm gonna have to make so many parameters 💀
Parameters are good, you should use it more 🙂
hmmm so that's the reason Horse does not have an running cost setting
and I must say that the Horse is perfectly balanced
While running costs are higher than on most other sets, thay still are no challange in low running cost setting
Grf cost params are for balancing with other grfs, that you never used 🙃
Unsinkable Sam for example could not be balanced with shark
yeah, but I'm trying to keep them basic
also, now that I know how to do the disable parameters I could probably just integrate the 3rd rail addon into the base passenger set
You could merge all of them and only need one MU car! ducks
I don't have that many Ids 😦
I could probably do it, but I'd lose all flexibility, and adding anything more in future would just be a massive hassle
also classifying some trains as real, proposed, and fictional and there are some edge cases
the X2000 technichally entered service in Australia, so they're real, but a full train set never made it here
but I guess it should go in the real category?
but on the other hand, the VFT sprite is based on all the information I can get on the proposals, so it's technically proposed, but at the same time, it's only pieced together from information, and not a single proposal
so I guess it's technichally fictional too?
operational, prototype, proposed, fictional
your x2000 example would go under prototype
Proposed and fictional I think overlap too much. Prototype if at least one actually got built and trials got ran on it.
If the paperwork floated around but it never got built then yeah, proposed.
I guess you could say straight up fictional if it was only ever a pretty painting and never even got entertained for a formal proposal
aight, I'll think that's the criteria I'll use then
I'm using fictional for stuff that I designed tbh
Well yeah that makes sense too
the criteria for proposed is that in an alternate universe, it is reasonable for it to have been built
Ragins Originals
so stuff like the XPT-DM which was only mentioned in the VFT proposal would go into the proposed category, because while a design wasn't made, we can reasonably assume what it would have looked like
altough the issue is then what about the VR Interurban Comeng trains? They were proposed, but I haven't got a blueprint for them, so my sprite was entirely based on assumptions
so I guess that's more fictional?
also I guess these are technchally proposed and fictional? because they're based on actual car plans, just with different equipment and in a different era
AAAAA
I'm overthinking this
See how the numbers per each category look. If it’s too stacked in any one area then default to the more optimistic or more cynical of the two choices.
Until it evens out
tbh I'm fine if they don't work out fully
Yeah, sort the list and then do a gut check
it's more to give people who wanna play realistic games the ability to disable anything that isn't 100% real
oops, all parameters
I might change the text colour to make it more clear what is what
I suppose that makes it clearer
I don’t understand the point of these parameters. Players who don’t want specific vehicles can just…not buy them. 🙂
Make GRFs for yourself 🙂
I know, I'm just including them for scenario makers and the like who may want to restrict certain vehicles
or players who want a way to reduce buy menu clutter
Honestly I don’t see any point beyond the real/prototype/proposed/fictional
You’re creating a tangled mess of nested conditions that’s gonna drive you up the wall.
well it's pretty straigth forward, most trains only have two disable conditions, and in testing it seems to not have any issues
but worse case, the way it's setup means a basic find and replace can get rid of it
What GRF are these in?
CNAPS
iirc there's two versions on bananas, but that's because I stuffed up when posting, so ones a locomotive set while the other is a passenger set
Not sure if you've had a look at it yet, but a lot of the diesels have misaligned smoke effects
presumably electrics too but it's less noticable with the sparks
Which track set is recommended with your train sets?
I only saw one, downloaded it and it's working fine
Yee, I've noticed that too, I'm just not sure how to fix it
I normally use ufibys track set
Use the visual effect and powered property, it allows you to set the offset
visual_effect_and_powered: visual_effect_and_powered(VISUAL_EFFECT_STEAM, 3, DISABLE_WAGON_POWER);
I'll play around with it then
That's what I did for the reversed tender engines
I think the number is just an offset by vehicle length in /8ths
there's another way of doing offsets with more exact coordinates and multiple emitters, which Andy's sets use
that's how he does "side by side" emitters
oooh, that's odd
I see
I had a go at this, and I just get an error whe compiling
oh hang on I know why
and that's easily done then
I'll have to retrofit every other set with this now
oh yh, finally got around to doing those Tulloch Interurban liveries
good boy
🤔
also, if people wanna know what I've been working on more broadly
it's mostly just updating misc sprites
updated the sprites of some of the early DMUs and passenger coaches
some really badly need a re-work, like these WAGR DMUs are so bad 💀
guess who just found out the sprite alignment they used is broken? 🫠
Oopsie poopsie
:////
okay fixed the template
tbh, idk how people who work with software for a living don't go crazy and stab people
either way, SX EMUs done, I was gonna code them as coaches too, but that can be tomorrow nights job
might also add more liveries to the U-sets, and code them as loco hauled carriages too, since IRL they were loco hauled for a few months before they ran under their own power
similer to hitachi
Hitachis weren't locomotive hauled?
they're hitachis
wait
these do not have an series designation?
(The numbering range can be series designation too)
no, they're just known as Hitachi trains
theorithically they were made on hitachi licence although not a single component was manufactured by hitachi thairselves
weird that thse do not have an official designation
well only the electrical components were based on Hitachi equipment
the bodies and everything else was designed and manufactured locally
they only carry the Hitach name because it was a simple nickname, and they didn't have an official name unlike other Melbourne trains
iirc when they first entered service they were just called Silver Sets
God, managing the fleet without official type designations must be an nightmare
and the numbering seems weird too
well they sitll had a name
tbh you don't really need an official designation, just something to call them
oh yh, I haven't posted about that electric pony set I was working on in a while...
largely because I haven't had the inspiration to work on it, and I've been unsure how to move forward
but what I'm thinking of doing is making the narrow gauge EMUs use the push-pull code I use for stuff like the X2000, since I know that works, it's similar to iron horse, and it means I don't have to try and reverse engineer iron horses code
as for the EMUs, I might not do them based on QR stuff since it doesn't fit the iron horse vibe tbh, but as an alternative addon I wouldn't be opposed
what I might instead do it stuff based on swiss narrow gauge
since imo that fits Horse's style, and there are already some narrow gauge equipment based on swiss narrow gauge
also they're be pretty easy to draw lmao
I mean, narrow gauge in horse already has a bit of a aussie/kiwi vibe to it so maybe not too far removed?
but eh I'm not complaining
electric pony is a fun name
True
Tbf I'll probably make them some sort of hybrid, so not fully based on them
But we'll see
Hello! Really enjoying your sets! In the Oceania set, specifically one of the livery variations of the Bombardier Vlocity, I think I found graphical bug. The first carriage does not seem to pick up the primary CC at the top. Should it have a matching yellow stripe?
Oooh, yh, thats a bug, I'll fix that this weekend
I wanna redo the vlocities anyway
Awesome! Probably one of my favourites in the set!
not gonna finish it tonight, but brain thought
Long distance version of the tait
basically a tait mixed with a VR E type coach
it's kinda cool imo?
liking the repeating windows
yeah, I try and use this where I can
but for some sprites it's annoying not able to be used due to the layout of the vehicle
also I might add a front inter-car door on these
since I feel like if these were real, they'd mix motors/trailers the same way they did with normal taits, and with longer distances it's importanted to be able to go from one car to the other
goes surpsisingly hard
goes hard
Vlocity re-done
really nice
This is for when the Oscars get cascaded into suburban service after being displaced by the new intercitys I assume
Wonder if they'll still stick around on the Wollongong locals between Waterfall and Port Kembla
yee, seemingly
it is option 2, so I'm assuming there's more
I could probably do a GIPA request to get the others, but I'm not that desperate
I think the plan is to have NIFs do that, and all OSCARs/Tangaras stick to suburban runs
That’s one of the 3 options
Oh?
Harris refurb done
and in post MTA liveries, in case your game is in the fucked up timeline where the refurb harris's make it into MTMs ownership
Cursed
Tulloch 1200 class and DRCs done :3
🤔
Push pull V-line? Interesting
well I've heard a few people mention that the H-types were meant to have driving trailers
yet to find proof, but for the time being I can make an educated guess on what they would have looked like 🙂
H-Set my beloved
re-drew my early coaches (1855-1877) and I think they look a lot better
I'm finally over my "give everything noise" arc
I still wanna try and find a way to differentiate the 4/6/8 wheel coaches tho, so I might loop back to them
yes
noise is a good way to add fake detail
but not really a supliment for real detail
regardless, you're one of the best artists around at the moment
yeah, exactly
oh god don't say that, I'm a dumbass 😦
I'll disagree but sure
there's like 5 competent artists currently active in this server and we're 2 of them
I suppose 🙂
https://www.patreon.com/davidxnewton for early videos!
Marcel Vos's great RCT channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBlXovStrlQkVA2xJEROUNg
A new venture because I've got addicted to OpenTTD again! I found myself thinking about how Transport Tycoon works underneath, and I'm looking through the code of the open source remake of it to discover...
watched this video, and now I kinda wanna do a station names grf
looking at this
it seems simple enough...
I might start noting down suffixes, so if anyone has any suggestions lmk
I'll probably do australian/kiwi names first tho
-bong has to be a suffix
not really a suffix we use for stations tho
yee
tbf, there's already an aussie town name set that includes bong as a suffix 🙂
been experimenting, and I've just been looking for anything that's relevant
currently got it set up so that road stops are named after a road, and I just grabbed whatever names I liked
railway stations are generally named after/based on IRL stations
I'll keep adding more names as I think of them
Does your newgrf differentiate between road/rail/air/water stations?
Regular ones don’t
It does
Oh nice
Sometimes I love how a town’s second airport is automatically given a name like [town] Halt or [town] Lakeside as it uses another unused suffix
Man, I could use something like that. After all, it gets tiring and pretty hard to give original names to your different stations and stops
Btw, are there also extra names for stuff like waypoints?
no 😦
as far as I'm aware, there's not a way for me to do that
no, because we don't use those for street names in Australia or New Zealand
but I'll make a north american version at some point that includes them
Sometimes 😂
yh, but they're far more rare!
also my god numbered street names are annoying af
I have a DA at work that's on a numbered street and every time I have to refer to it I always forget which way around the numbers go
For airport: Air Force Base, New [townname] International Airport, Airpark, Sky Harbour, Jetport, Spaceport (for futuristic games)
Those work
But I'd rather not include AFB or Spaceport
Not every airport will be an AFB or space port
I wanna try and stick to names that are generic
If the player wants to call them that, they can just rename it
Baikonur Cosmodrome
Cape Canaveral Cosmodrome
They don't exist in Australia tho :3
also, if anyone wants to know what names I've included thus far, here's the lang
ones with just a number are for road stops only, U is road and rail, RC is rail near city centres, R is rail anywhere else, D is for docks, and A is for airports
also
any more names welcome
I think you could add terminal and centre as a name for road stops and train stations. Like for example, (city name/street name) Bus Terminal, (city name) Goods Terminal, (city name/street name) Transit Centre, etc.
I might save those for an American version, as they don't really feel super Australian tbh
request: please put 'ragin' in as a tag on your grfs in banananananas so I can find them easier 😛
sure, I'll do that now lmao
especially when you rename your sets 😛
Ugh
It refers to tags in game but in bananas its just regions
And you can't do searches in the web browser version
and search nolonger searches through descriptions
oh rip?
BUT, the filter inside the grf menu does search descriptions!
what a pain in the ass to use
well I include my username and real name in all my GRF descriptions
so it works in that regard
Yeah
hey, I'm going to test something
someone name a north american locomotive, preferably a passenger unit with a cowl body
Cowl body?
F40PH
a body that covers the locomotive, basically what every european locomotive is
easy, I was doing that one anyway
F59PH
It's my favourite EMD/GMDD locomotives
Other than the F40C
Might do them in the coming days
I wanna practice drawing again, and experiment with some new ideas
Just gotta re learn how to draw because I'm using a fresh gimp install and they changed some of the controls 😦
Oh yeah that GIMP change is annoying
luckily it's customisable so you can mostly put it back to how it was
Yh, but I just need to find out how
The preferences section is a maze
experimenting with less noisy graphics, and shameless ripping off some of @signal gate s early Moose sprites
I think it looks good so far, it's just difficult getting the scale/shading right
also F40PHs are stupidly tall, they're 300mm taller than a Tangara train lmao
height for NA stuff is an open question
Yeah, climbing down from an F40 cab (really any cab unit) feels like you’re descending a cliff
I'm just gonna do them the same height as a DD in my australian stuff
that way they tower over single level cars like they do IRL
I had same idea
at TTD scale, it's closer to the bi-level car than the single-level
this could also work
tbf I was literally basing my work on that test sprite sheet you did
I've been shamelessly stealing your ideas for years now 🙂
Ragin delivering us Moose before Andy does… smdh.
yes it could, hurry up.
if he's not using his ideas, I will
This is fantastic
been tweaking this F40PH again and I feel a bit meh about the cab?
idk, it's hard to try and get right
I think this works but aaa
Yeah it looks good
yeah
seems fine, but also aaaaaaa
I'm still getting back into the swing of things and I'm probably overthinking it
tbh that's the worst part of making stuff, you always end up looking at what you've made and thinking you could do better but often you're unable to be better
aaa
I think the only touch you could make is adding a small rear platform to the sprites
Although it is a small detail so you don't have to
yeah, I was kind of divided on that
I'm not gonna do it for the F40 since it's not as noticeable as on other locomotives
but on stuff like the SDP40F, where it is larger, I'll include it
Yeah that makes sense
Besides, there are some F40PHs that don't have a back platform
yeah, and that's why I don't wanna do it too
okay it kinda looks good in game
but yh, the plan is to have the IRL liveries, but the top level livery isn't going to be just CC1, or a demonstrator, it's going to be a generic "usable" livery
so for the F40 I stole this once from Bsquicklehausens City Skylines asset
Will you still make a demonstrator livery?
nah, it's easier to do a generic "usable" one since that'd be better gameplay wise
works well so far
I'm going out of my way to try and make liveries as universal as possible
I think as a base, it allows the player to do a lot of different railroad liveries, while not being too overwhelming
touching up the FL9, and I'm trying to make the third rail equipment more obvious
much better bulldog nose now too
Love the FL9
connect 2nd cab and you will have EP-5!
No, they are quite different
true, but in the pixel form the only thig that would differ (in this resolution) is the top of the nose in the sideview
Still a completely different design altogether
Maybe slightly more of angle on the nose? It seems to look right in game though to me
F40 is a bit of a brick so hard to differentiate in game but the screenshots you posted seem to nail it
Will you also add a via or go transit livery?
true, I could do that at some point
yeah, I tried that, but it's hard to do
either way, I've done the liveries now lmao, so I'll have to leave it
oh yh, they're on my list, I just got tired and wanted to work on something else
I can do them this morning
also, I changed how the livery table works (it's under the modern locomotives tab)
Tank Locomotives Suburban Tank Tender Locomotives Mixed Traffic Light Mixed Traffic Name Inspiration/References Introduction Year Notes 1850s 4-2-2 Judah https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T._D._Judah 1863 1870s 1880s 1890s 1900s 1920s ...
there's 5 livery groups, base (the top level one that will be somewhat unique to each locomotive), generic (usable generic-ish liveries that all locomotives will get), long distance (Amtrak/Via liveries that generally only passenger locomotives will have), and special (stuff that is common, but doesn't fit in other categories, ie Santa Fe, NJT, Metra liveries etc)
but I do have 3 special livery slots left if anyone has any suggestions, they need to represent either a major railway, or something that is generic enough that a play could reasonably use it for something else too
additional generic, and via liveries done :3
Just wondering, are you gonna make the VIA rail F40PH's with the rebuilt back end?
no, there's just not enough of a difference to warrant including it
british rail F40PH
BR if it were cool
god the FL9 is cool looking
I really need to do more new haven coaches to go with it lmao
The headlight looks wrong to me, have you tried moving it one pixel to the left?
(Diagonal view)
damn, you're right
I'll update them now, it looks better with it slightly to the left
much better
An alternative history where they retained passenger services
My favourite part of your sets is the ability to recreate alternative scenarios
These are awesome, so much better than the 2CC set FL9
thanks, and it's better than my original one lmao
also it has support for 3rd rail, so it gets a slight power boost on third rail trackage
I might have mentioned this before, but I did the power boost thing for a long-lost 2cc third rail addon
i spy Montana Rail Link and Burlington-Northern!
It was never released and I lost the code long ago 🥲
aw rip
I think without the platform works well
easiest part aboit the SDP40F is that it's basically just a 6 axle, longer version of the F40
so it takes like no time to do lmao
SDP40F base livery done, still have all the other liveries to do, but that's tomorrow nights problem
Looking good!
Oh hell yeah
Yeah I think you've really nailed it. Your roofs in particular are hitting the right sweet spot of detail as well
This looks great
yeah, I'm still very iffy with it, but I've been getting better imo
When you first dropped the blanket noise approach I felt like the roofs of your engines and wagons had gotten very flat and grey, but those two have nailed it.
But no, good work, I like seeing your style and skills evolve in real time
yeah, that was one of my issues too
these are excellent sprites yeah
tbh, I think the noise approach works for roofs, since they tend to be a bit more messy
I tried it when I did the Harris's and I think it looked great
I'm still really happy with these
but I'll continue to experiment, still iffy with doing roofs, but that comes with time lmao
yeah noise can work
it probably makes things easier to look good
the sbb set uses noise to do that
the actual vehicles lack a lot of detail outside of noise
yeah, it can work, it just depends how you do it
now I'm in a better middle ground, I think
something japanese?
nah, the refurbished Harris trains from Melbourne
really really nice!
An alternate history where rail electrification in North America was more widespread
its giving br class 37
Yeah
I really need to redo the JF6C
That reminds me. I remember a while back posting some images of these GF6C's
Yee, when I do them they'll have those liveries
SDP40F done :3
Should put everything in rock island
well you probably could
Moose Baby
When are you planning your next release? I'm playing in a multiplayer game that's about to restart, and we'd love to have your latest work to play with. 🙂
(We're also using NARS and wagons-only Iron Horse)
pretty much whenever, I've got list of IDs done, so future updates won't break
but I'll only post it on Bananas when I have a decent selection of locomotives done
or when I get bored/run out of time
I have to work on my thesis soon 🙁
trying to do the F40C, and it should be easy since it's very similar to the SDP40F
just the vents on the site are weird
You could make the GF6C original cab design, that virtually same as F40PH Cab
Only ordered by bc rail to serve coal mines in the northeast part of the province
However they were all withdrawn prematurely by 2000 when a drop in coal prices no longer made the mines profitable
i doubt anyone else wanted them
is there (still) another 50kV AC line in USA or Canada?
If I recall correctly there was an version (or conversion?) of E60 for 50kV
most electric railways left in US are 25kV?
https://openrailwaymap.org/ have a look yourself
Ooooooooo
All but one scrapped
The GF6C was an electric locomotive for freight duties built by General Motors Diesel in collaboration with ASEA of Sweden.
Seven of these locomotives were built in 1983 and 1984, for use on the BC Rail's electrified Tumbler Ridge subdivision.
Similar to EMD's GM6C testbed locomotive, the GF6C used a frame and running gear that was identical to...
still nice that thay have saved one of tham
Yee, I plan on just refusing it
Hey, I know you :333
What about the fictional VIA Rail liveries?
Yee, I can do them, I'm just lazy
Dumb idea, F39PH-DM, give an F40PH the FL9 treatment and cut it down
Then I'll have a 1970s era dual mode locomotive
And I guess I'll give it the 12-645 turbocharged engine from the 39 series locomotives
Cut it down? The FL9 is longer than an F unit. 🙂
L = lengthened frame
This allowed it to have a three-axle truck on the rear to spread out the weight on the Park Avenue viaduct going into Grand Central Terminal
If you want a 1970s-era equivalent, you could use the FL9. In the 80s, they used the FL9. In the 90s, they used the FL9 and finally replaced it with the P32 😛
But I see what you mean, following the SD39 and putting three-axle trucks on a standard length frame. Wouldn't that be an SDP39F-DM, though?
I mean in terms of height, so instead of 4.7m tall it'd be ~4.4m
Well I was thinking of it just being a shorter F40 with the GP39 engine
So then it'd get the F39 resignation
Also nothing else uses that, so it'd be cool :3
Here's a new idea. Not sure if it's on your list but would love to see the GP40TC added to the set
Yeah, but I'm also thinking about a player who wants a new locomotive in the 70s/80s
It's on the list :3
Cool. Definitely would make a nice addition
Considering it's the first HEP equipped locomotive built
Yee, Although HEP isn't something I'm going to simulate
early mockup, bit it kinda goes hard
went and looked back at some of my old sprites and holy shit these are bad
I can't believe I used to think these were good 🙁
moment
was quite worried the F40C would look bad, but in game it looks fine lmao
gonna touch up the liveries now
I'm also gonna start touching up the passenger cars in a bit, because those Gallery cars need to be redone 🫠
Also the original F40C livery looks pretty good in game
F40C liveries done
Rail infrastructure?
JP+ Tracks
As in the livery
oh, nah, it's meant to be more the UP livery
Damn, I had no idea there was a class 31 in UP livery lol
As a treat, here's the GMD GF6C
I should be working on my uni work, but I got fed up so you get this instead
I know that procrastination feeling
I don't wanna do my uni work 🙁
Relatable
GF6CH base sprite done
gonna go ahead and do the other liveries now
and the other GF6C liveries
GF6CH done :3
What does the H stand for?
Head End Power
it's to differentiate it from the freight GMD GF6C
Irl if these were built, they probably would have been known as just GF6Cs
GF6C liveries done :3
Have you worked out vehicle progression (speed bands and eras)?
not too much, I just use IRL stats and then go from there
if it gets to a point where something feels off, I'll change it up
isn't the H versions nose 1 pixel longer?
and, if the goodstrain version is GF6C why not name the passenger version GP6C or GFP6C (as FP7)
that's one of the changes
because the designation IRL would have been likely just GF6C, and using GF6CH differentiates it, but is still similar
also GFP/GP would designate it as having steam heating, which it wouldn't have had
I am not an expert on thair designations
so in EMD P means stem heating and H means electric heating?
pretty much
historically P just meant passenger, but they needed a way to differentiate locomotives with steam heating and HEP, so it was then used to designate steam heating
some locomotives still got the P designation, despite not having steam heating though e.g. F40PH & F59PH
oh, no... inconsistant designations... send help...
EMD locomotive designations were like that
the AN AN class has only a single cab, but got the JT46C, despite that designation meaning a locomotive with two cabs
Looks like the stripe is the wrong height here
but yeah, these are awesome, if only we had native push-pull 😛
bugger, you're right, I'll fix that now
yeah, gotta pester one of the devs to allow it :3
in the diagonal view the loco with the black-orange set looks a lot like EF4... (Joe)
It's not, it's a GF6CH
I suppose, but mostly on this specific angle since you can't see the nose
very
I used to start coursework on the morning of the deadline afternoon
ROCK ISLAND 🔥 🔥
seeing youve done the GF6 now, perhaps an E60?
and if you ever do the bullnoses, we need the rock island special
I can't do that, I'd die 🙁
Yee, I'll look into it
Dw, they're on the list :3
Yay
now just an little question...
WHY it does have only one cab?
With 2 would be an nice general-purporse loco for lines where one loco is enough and You need to run around train
It's single cab like almost all American diesels, plus the gallery cars have cab cars so it's push-pull
but yeah I'll be happy to see those oddballs in the game
It is an really interesting cultural thing that some things just simply do not get accepted in certain countries while being great for certain applications
Like more than 2 door/side of commuter MU car in Poland
Or 2 cab diesels in US
2 cabs is more expensive
USA railroads try to be cheap
Here's a rare USA double ended diesel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_DR-6
Baldwin Locomotive Works produced several different Baldwin DR-6 models of 6-axle passenger train-hauling diesel locomotives between 1945 and 1948. The series comprised eight individual versions, all of which sold only in small numbers; across all versions, only 39 locomotives were produced. Each version was produced only for a single railroad...
There's also stuff like the aem7 and HHP8
So there's a few, they're just not as common
Double ended electrics are pretty common, but I was thinking of diesels specifically which are much harder to find
I guess this doesn't count as it's a centrecab https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_DT-6-6-2000
The Baldwin DT-6-6-2000 (Also referred to as the Baldwin DT6-6-2000) was a twin-engined diesel-electric transfer switcher, built by Baldwin Locomotive Works between 1946 and 1950.
A single prototype using a pair of 8 cylinder naturally aspirated 608NA prime movers (engines) was built in 1946 for the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway. In order to...
true
I can't really think of any double ended diesels apart from that weird baldwin you sent
Electrics... E60 whan?
When I feel like doing them
I do wanna sus out the double ended electric locomotive code first tho
yeah, it's just hard to do
Did you look at the NARS one?
and I've been looking at the original NARS sprite to see how Pikka did it
The curve in the nose profile should be higher up, above the headlight
something like this?
Better 🙂
agreed
now to do the other angles 🙁
does this nose work?
looks fine when detailed
High Speed trains are a point of fascination for many, including model railroaders. Not all models are based in reality though... Let's take a look at 3 models of High Speed trains that are painted in liveries that they never carried in reality.
The trains featured include:
Model Power Amtrak Shinkansen (HO Scale)
Piko Amtrak ICE 3 Train Set (H...
I saw that!
This reminded me of your sets
I really wanna do the Amtrak livery for the ice trains lmao
Yes
If only North America had trains like this
I think I saw a video of an ice trainset sent to the US for testing?
i love the amtrak 0 series lmao
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICE_Train_North_America_Tour
The ICE Train - A Renaissance on Rails takes you on a rail trip through time. The InterCityExpress, a high speed passenger train which has attracted numerous European travelers back to the rails, made its U.S. debut in 1993 as part of Amtrak's high speed train trials and demonstrations...
Yee, and the X2000 too
But then they went with the tgv lmao
Acela is based on the tgv?
Yh, but they at least bought one of them in the end
Yee
yea
This one?
That already exists, its the avelia liberty
X995 was a SNCF locomotive used for testing, but they chose the SJ RC4 (X996) to develop into the AEM-7
Oh yeah. I remember hearing about that
Yeeee :3
Sorry I thought you were talking about making an American version of the TGV
🤔
I don't have a coach that can work with these, so it's a bunch of Comeng interurban coaches lmao
kinda wish there was a way to do the yellow lining on the EAs, but it's not super doable at this scale
looks better with the white, but now it's time for the other liveries
now I've got a cab that I like, I can run through the other E units, and then I'll do the F units
yeah 🙁
shame we never got anything like that here
also that FP10 in the back is cool looking too
the late era F unit transit locomotives go hard
Yeah, it was just a HEP generator and cab car at the end
oh? so basically just a power van?
And also a driving cab, for push-pull ops
ooooh, neat
LIRR did something similar with old FAs
oh?
Ah, standardising against horse alignments then?
Conrail colours kinda go hard too lmao
yee, I did it ages ago
ABA goes hard too
yeah
Nice. Probably better long term considering where you’ve gone stylistically as well.
Can use horse wagon only mode to fill in the roster too.
yee, that's the idea
also means if Andy does moose, it saves me having to focus on freight wagons
Nice
Liveries done
they don't work as well with the "generic" liveries, since they're all semi modern, but they still look good
I know that some Funits were converted to generator and driver cab vans but I have another question
What have thay done to the buffer beam?
to the no. 7100 on this photo
Well, give it buffers
most of these had it like this
i am 99% sure that this had to be modified
or maybe it is just an rare version?
Ig it’s just for ease as it’s a local passenger loco
I don't get it
easier to the couplar operator to ride the front of the loco whan it drives to the coach to couple it?
It’s an American thing I wouldn’t expect us Europeans to understand it
one more before bed, but more GF6CH liveries uwu
the MBTA would be so much cooler with electric locomotives
Would love to see Caltrain liveries for the GF6CH
For like an alternate timeline where Caltrain electrification was done in the 80s
Its on the list
You can already do the 2nd one
Its the same livery as BN/Montana rail link, just colour swapped
It's one of the ones here if you wanna see what it looks like
Oh. I didn't notice that one
All good
I'm trying to make liveries that are as universal as possible, since thats better for gameplay
I fucking put the NJ transit slant thing the wrong way around
it leans to the left >:/
also, decided to use the old NARS E7 livery for my E7s Liv0
I think I'll do this for a few, since it's a nice homage to it
also did the EMC E3, but like the E7, I've only done Liv0
gonna try and sort the balancing a bit before committing
Unbuild EMDs
Tpes AMT-125 and F-125
As the name suggests, these wre high speed locos for opeartion at about 200km/h. The first one was ment to wirk in twin sets (1 loco at tech rake end) with passenger trains, the 2nd one was likely ment to be an universal loco
I like it
Yee! Both are currently on my list
I wonder if the AMT-125 was inspired by the InterCity 125 for the name
German ICE train set seen in Wilmington, Delaware back in 1993
Looking forward to recreating an alternate history with more ice trainsets through your set
Or tgv
yee, I do wanna do the ICE trains soon-ish
I just wanna get through more common stuff first tho
please help i have no idea where it went

I'm griffinrails, just a guy who really likes trains and trams. And monorails. Maglevs? Yup. BRT? Sure. Hyper...
Wait an moment
these were tested outside of germany?
Yeah there were a couple in Australia, not sure if they're still around
or at the very least, they've not been seen on the mainline in years
Technically the UK uses them as well except it's for maintenance and not freight
I even started drawing this version for the 2cc set but never finished
Yeah, I am aware of the MOW service in UK
Some (de-motorised?) were used as push-pull sets with electric locos in Switzerland
Touching up the Metropolitans atm, and I think it's an improvement
Maybe needs more on the side for the LIRR livery tho
I think they look good
surprisingly, these needs very little work to get them looking good
also idk what I fucked up with the code, but for some reason save games now that I've redone these don't load if this grf was used?
works fine in a new game, but I've clearly broken something and I'm not sure lmao
I wonder if You can re-use some parts of the sprite from the OHEL version for an SPV2000?
well I can just re-use parts of the Amfleet for that
I mean the superstructure on the roof
oh, yh, I could probably modify it
Last seen used for shunting at private terminal, I read
The Horse cargo sprinter is there if anyone wants it, although it’s a windhoff euro mpv not the australian one
I could always steal it, but I also don't feel like it'd suit anything I'd make
could always just chuck it in with freight wagons when I do them
loads still operate in the uk
and have done for over 20 years now
Looks like a more streamlined F59PHI
Where's that from?
oh damn
This website is an great
Too bad that it is VERY chaotic and it is extraordinarly difficult to go to other subpages
yee, I use it for working out where to put the greebles and stuff
I have noticed that on the concept illustrations and on demonstrators the number boards often display the YEAR
yee, emd did that a bit
also I've not seen that art before
it's an early concept of the AEM-7, but it's interesting that there's mountains in the background?
maybe it's from a proposed electrification project through the rockies? I know they were considering that at the time
Apallahians?
I know that some lines through appallhians were electrified at some point
MAYBE some lasted till 70s?
Or at least the poles, so new wires and transformers could have been build
appalachia
yh, some were electrified, but they were taken down fairly quickly
also there's not much snow in appalachia, the mountains just aren't tall enough
this is too green to be the rockies, so it might be the cascades?
Thay recon that till today, at least in one tunnel which is long and on an steep incline...
Diesel fumes...
well yh, diesel fumes aren't great...
I inhaled diesel fumes since birth and I turned out fine
they do a little bit tbh
likely you live in an place with no tunnels
nah there's some pretty big tunnels under my feet about 200m away
they keep confusing google maps
I avoid those tunnels though, they cost money
also what is sarcasm
Kinda goes hard
was curious, but the F40PH makes the NSW 45 class look tiny
45/48 classes are tiny anyway tbf
also, update, but genesis hard
I feel like this is gonna be one that looks boring, until it's in game, then it looks great
cold war period train designs were so... "experimentally pioneering"
The genesis was built after the fall of the soviet union tho 🙁
front schould be less slopy, more vertical
The genesis is annoyingly hard >:/
Caesar Vegara you asshole making the hardest possible train to draw
Clearly you should just draw them in finescale instead, you lose enough detail to where the big picture stops mattering :D
haha, nice try 🙂
:3
I do have more locos I want stuff for when I get to making a tracking table I can work with, it's pain. Maybe I'll need to throw some money at some people to draw me pretty finescale trains
probably a good idea
but idk there's that many people experienced in drawing finescale?
Probably aren't, no
i like the middle (front) view
yeah...
the fiagonal looks nice too
could always learn
drawing lets you make the weird cursed ideas that randomly pop into your head
I can bodge together sideviews
same 3d modeling
it takes practice, but you get it eventually
I normally just look at what other people have done and try to bodge it though 🙂
It's bodging all the way down
I should first just concern myself with like, getting my actual sheets in order
Trying to figure out a good way to track all the data is pain
Especially in a way that's then easily fed to a program I write
yh, that can really help
but legit just have a play around with bodging sprites together
worst case, you can alyways ask for help
I'm always around lmao
The main problem is that i need like, 3 tabs. One for the actual vehicles, one for their variants, and then something for livery per variant
Easy enough to write down just not in a way that's like. Clear
yeah....
that I can't help with too much tbh
with my working document, I just list variants that I might want to do and reserve the ids for them
and then save the hard work for later
and I'm the opposite :333
although more because I don't know how to lmao
also, tangent, but it's annoying how all the genesis locomotives are identical, except for the ass
P32 has a hustlers window and nothing else, P40 has a hustlers window and rear door, but the P42 only has the rear door
Huh I never knew that
this is the kind of dumb detail I go into lmao
P32Cs getting a rear door though, because no one will see it, and it makes doing the sprite easier 🙂
They should have made it a full cab like the 44 class
Time to bodge
maybe for a fictional set at some point
but the ungodly child of a 44 class and a genesis is something I wanna do...
I need to split off my fictional trains into their own set at one point
Speaking of fictional, double-headed F units?
as in two cabs?
A units, B units and AA units
Exactly
that's just a VR B class
funnily enough, when the Clyde put the details of these into EMD, the guys at EMD basically responded with "WTF do you need two cabs for?", and were hesitant to let them do it
I remember when I used to play Trainz when I was small I used to put a B unit in between two passenger wagons to make a DMUnkind of things
well, you could just modify a 421 class
Nohab my beloved
no, it's a Clyde model
Australian built
I think this works?
I'll do the final angle and get the subvariant specific details done
Diagonal view needs a smaller windscreen I think
it does, but I tried it and nothing worked
I'll give it another go in a sec tho
okay that works I think
nah, totally nohab
:/
little iffy about the base liveries, but I think with a little tweaking these should be good
these with the window had an full fledged control panel at the end?
only for yard movements/shunting, but yes
i dont get it
If thay want to mount an 2nd control panel it schould be full-fledged
in order to make an loco that can run on the mainline 2 ways
that's just not american design practice
Are the metro north 32s not different?
they are, they're dual modes
they just for some reason ordered them with the hustlers cab
The P32s have a different exhaust/fan arrangement on the roof, and of course third-rail shoes and different innards
oh? how does that look? I couldn't find any good examples
ah, it's a larger radiator on the rear seemingly, as opposed to just a single fan
Here's another image of the roof
there we go
I'll fix that up tomorrow night then
for universality, I might just make it black, then I can just layer it on top when exporting the sprites...
I swear all p32s are?
All the P32s are dual mode, yes. Amtrak and Metro North both have them.
I believe the only difference between Amtrak and Metro North P32s is that MN has them delivered with nose escape hatches for use in the tunnel to Grand Central, while Amtrak had to cut holes and add them later so they could detour trains into Grand Central during construction.
Looking good!
Missing third rail shoes on the rear truck, side view 🙂
Looks great otherwise!
Are you doing the heritage liveries?
New haven p32 ❤️
:/
Yee, it'll get all the liveries in my table
So it'll have the old Amtrak liveries and the like
Oh, I mean the Metro-North heritage liveries 😄
https://www.mta.info/press-release/photos-metro-north-railroad-unveils-seventh-locomotive-heritage-series
Links to the others in the text of this article
MTA Central, New Haven (green), Penn Central, NYC, Conrail, Metro North (beachball), and of course New Haven (McGinnis/Matter)
In my opinion it's the nicest heritage fleet any US railroad has ever done
Oooh, unlikely
I only have 50 ids per locomotive and I wanna try and keep everything universal
Fair enough 🙂
i always find funny that on hertige units thay place the names of carriers that do not exist from loooong time
Placing THAIR own name, together with paint scheme of an predecessor would be more logical
Do thay have the rights to the names of thair predecessors?
If you have to pick one, I think all four of the ConnDOT locos wear the Herbert Matter livery
i love that new haven livery
temu nmbs hld 55
Yh, but thaf livery is already on my list
So every locomotive gets it :3
random question, should this locomotive from Cities Skylines (that's clearly based on the PL42AC), be a electro diesel, or just an electric locomotive?
Would bi mode be overpowered in your set
well no, I already have 3 of them
I generally just give them less power on diesel, but more on electric
I’d say that’s bi mode
I always saw it as an electro diesel because pure electrics are generally double ended
yeah, true
I'll make it an electro-diesel
might step it down to the 12-710 engine, so it'd go from 4200hp to 3200-3400 on diesel
but maybe 5000 or so on electric?
I like to imagine it'd work as a primarily electric locomotive that works along the NEC, but then does last mile on diesel
Actually the APL-45DP is 3600hp on diesel and 6000hp on electric
could make this basically a slightly less powerful, but cheaper alternative, since it'd be the same era
seems to be clearly based on these that are operated by NJT
I know
I say Bi-mode too
generally 1 cab cabunit/cowl unit/boxcab electrics are rare and whan thay exist thay tend to operate in fixed sets of 2 locos
Yes this has already been explained
tbh they're pretty easy since you just cross breed a Genesis with an F40
actually, I don't think anyones done one of these before?
made it taller with a solid frame and I think it looks great so far
but the front view looks like it has anxiety
that face looks like it'd break down and cry if it was late
Face looks fine to me, honestly
it does to me too, but I think it just looks funny
A friend of mine once told me that they think trains have funny faces, so I think it's fitting. Take a look at the Deltic's face
that's a very anxious looking engine
Mouth slightly open, wide eyed stare
yeah
I wonder if there are any angry looking trains
I think most either look anxious, or neutral
ACS-64 has angry eyes
Most modern vehicles do
Is this “autistic males learn emotions from train faces”? 🫠
“Thomas is feeling sad. Look at his eyes”
no comment
There’s a test with pictures of human faces and multiple choice answers for “which emotion is this?”
I had non-standard scores
got bad news for you then 🙁
they did the autism tests on me as a kid, but they said I wasn't
anyway, here's the PL42 done
not super happy with the livery? but I'll tweak it more
I didn’t have autistic scores
Nor neurotypical
fair enough then
idk what mine were lmao
also, changed the silver and I think this looks better
matches the texture of the locomotives better
VHS Locomotive
if we had 3cc this would be a good use case (the njt stripe)
but alas we're limited to 2cc
You can always fudge it and use a dark and light shade of the same CC
that's what I did for the 2CC version of the Cassiopeia
real livery for reference
Yeah :/
I could test that out
I guess if I do CC1 darker that might be more accurate?
I suppose it works?
also, touched up the multilevels to match the new template and with darker windows
Looks good!
Thanks!
Nice
I do not know why, but it gives me NUTS vibes...
just messing around, but MARC Genesis's and Metropolitans go hard
I should really sus out how I wanna do my pantograph code for single unit locomotives tbh
trying the E60, and it looks british >:/
eh looks too brick-ish to be british
You've given it more of the appearance of hard edges
brit more round
true
maybe just because it's blue
it's just a struggle to detail it because IRL the E60Cs were so flat
I don't think it looks too bad, I'd need to see it in-game though
yeah, I'll finish it up and we'll see
the Genesis's were pretty flat too, and they look fine in game
sufficiently brick enough?
Roof looks too round now I guess?
I suppose
maybe drop a shade in that transition from each side? make it look a bit sharper?
how so? I'm not sure I follow
well in your shades from lightest to darkets
which create your contour
Your horizontal view has four shades, your vertical and diagonal views have more
this looks a little better
this creates more appearance of a curve
this just makes it seem a little plain? is this sort of thing what you were thinking?
Yeah that reads a bit better, I think once you get the pantographs etc. in it will look better.
yeah, and tbf it's currently missing a lot of the greebling
Yeah
But you see what I mean that it makes it look a little less round
and thus less british
yeah, I think I just worry too much about not putting detail everywhere lmao
Yeah, but that's how you got into the crunchy noise trap before
I think theres some power in being able to selectively and deliberately not add detail
yeah...
"omg add noise to literally everything, it looks good"
I was such an idiot lmao
I think it looks good without noise, the real thing has huge slab sides too
yeah, GE loves its bricks
also, code seems to work fine, the vehicle is randomly flipped when the player buys it, and the pantograph stays facing the right direction
based it of Andy's code for horse and it works really well
looks good in game
gonna save the liveries for the future
I think I've got a pretty decent selection of locomotives atm
I do wanna do some more freight locomotives though
move the pantos 1 or 2 px left
I tried that, it didn't look good imo
ok, just leave it as it is
AEM7 and it's variants now?
Or maybe ofhher vaariants of E60?
Double deckers is civilisation.
more than likely
we'll see what I feel like
but I'm thinking of doing either the AEM-7 or HHP-8 next
there was something similer to E40 but as end-cab hood unit and 4 axle
Operated in texas utilities
from HHP-8 sprites you can doctor acela sprites
yee, there was a few one offs like that, and they're on the list, but they're not priorities atm
main goal is mostly just passenger stock atm
yee, exactly
FL9? NH EP-5?
or maybe turboliners?
interestingly, some had (at least in the beginning) UIC-style drop-down windows
they're all on the list
and the FL9 has already been done
wow, you are quick
Looks good
Doesn’t read as too rounded, looks suitably brick like.
can't wait for the ragin sd40-2
timeless classic. Musthave for an american set
I really do...
but in the meantime
swedish meatball
I think it looks good
ah one of my favorite meat a balls
