you can't get a stainless steel sports lange? 😄
that’s the Odysseus
which is actually made of stainless steel
their CEO called it “shocking” when the proposal first came to him lol
lmao
the only ones i've seen that are like, even half decent is maybe Rolex and Tudor
and they're the richest watch company so that makes sense
but like, most of them are so badly organised
wow it finally loaded
uh
where springbars
why integrated 😠
ew look at the leather and the rubber
yeah I don’t know why they sell the straps in leather/rubber
this is a stainless steel watch, stick with the traditional wristband
do you think that it's compatible with Swatch straps?
I don’t think Lange would appreciate that but I think you’ll be able to fit them on
oh these ones, nope
shame
Lange’s edge pins are wider
even with Lange’s attempts to make this a “sports watch” it just doesn’t feel right if you label it as one
I mean compare it to like, the least tool-y sports watch Rolex make, which I'd argue is the OP
it’s another high-end one from Lange, which they’ve decided to label as a sports watch to cater to a larger crowd
as a consequence Lange wasn’t able to sell many of these
yep
I think Lange have carved out their place in the market
they should stick in there
yeah it's not exactly jeans and a teeshirt is it
yeeeep
more polo, chino shorts
it’s a rich sportsman’s watch
even then, still feels wrong to classify that as a sports watch
traditional tennis on a grass court with wooden rackets and white everywhere
those types of vibes
have him chauffeured
you have your own court at home
or yeah that
but yeah, you won’t see Lange bragging too much about their Odysseus
mainly because they weren’t able to sell many of them
It's the kind of watch you would wear to Wimbledon but facts are Wimbledon is in London and you don't want to get mugged
like I’ve said, Lange have carved out their niche in the watchmaking community and in the market
trying to sell old rich watch collectors a sports watch is pretty out of place, and it’s in that price range where it does cater to old rich watch collectors only
despite their “accessibility” goals and stuff
not necessarily a fan but damn that's an intricate dial

Welcome
If I were to get the opportunity to own a Rolex (lol)
The only ones I think I'd actually want to own are the OP41, No Date Sub, Milgauss, or Explorer I
I like having a date on my watches but I hate the cyclops
I'm a huge Day-Date II guy
Very cliché, I know
ah the Milgauss with its iconic arrow seconds hand
You know, I've always loved the orange second-hand on the Milgauss
Yeah
ironically a) not the best watch for anti-magnetism by a long way and b) pretty sure it's the same case and movement as the Air-King so not even special in how anti-magnetic it is in the Rolex line lol
But it's just cool
The green glass, the fact no one's ever really heard of it
And it's got just enough character to feel special, but it's still very wearable like the OP and the Ex1
I've always wanted a Cellini as well
whenever I see the Milgauss I’m reminded of this ornament on WW2 planes
You definitely like the absolute opposite end of the Rolex catalogue to me lmao
You're like, full dress watch
I'm like, full tool watch lmao
Lol
Even now, I only have dress watches
The closest thing to a utilitarian watch that I have is my Bremont
I own three divers and a pilots watch
I own a Seiko diver
it's a dressy pilots watch but it's still a pilots watch lmao
and i wear it on a nato just to like, dress it down even more
This absolute beauty
I'm tryna get a chain strap for it
Because obviously, BRIGHT orange doesn't really go with everything
Wonder what your Hamilton would look like on one
That is hot
tbh it doesn't work as well as the nato
you don't see pilots watches on meshes, it's just not the done thing
Since it's a narrow bezel as well, I think it looks solid
plus i think the mesh i got is a little too, blingy
if it were a brushed finish i think it'd help a lot
Kinda reminds me of an IWC ngl
like uh idk if you've seen the james bond speedmaster in person?
but the mesh that comes with that is great, i think it's Ti
Prolly for sale on eBay if you look hard enough
I bought this for a pretty good price, it was around 250€ and it’s never failed me in 4/5 years
but obviously I might need to buy another/upgrade soon
btw sorry i meant seamaster obviously lol
not because the watch is bad, because I kinda want some change
Whatcha thinking
wouldn't wanna put a Ti strap on a steel watch anyway tbh
I mean if I had a choice right now I’d go with a Dornblüth
but obviously they’re a little out of range
uh yeah lmao
one of these
I love cut off numbers
it’s like a Lange but considerably less expensive
although, in no way affordable
of course yeah they’re still quite expensive
What about a Junghans
i looked up the Quintus 2010.9, it's like €12,000
the one I showed above, the 99.4 is around 6k €
okay that's a lot closer to reality
i mean still obviously a shit tonne of money, like, literally more than i'm about to spend on a car
not affordable, but if I had to choose a watch right now I’d choose that
like 6k is in the Grand Seiko/Omega price range
somehow I find myself finding this watch more appealing than those
My favourite German brand the the moment has got to be Moritz Grossmann
The Atum GMT to be specific
MG is nice
oh man I really don’t like that dial lol
it’s a nice dial, but I’ll always prefer white and black dials
or salmon, if done right
It costs as much as my tuition for two years of pre-U (college), but if I could buy one, I definitely would without hesitation lol
tbh i bet Dornblüth hold value like a sieve
bet you can get some decent deals used
yeah you don’t really buy a Dornblüth to resell it xd
but if someone is, I’ll keep a lookout
yeah, that's the flipside though really
I absolute love Lang & Heyne as well, they make one of my favourite quadrilateral dial watches at the moment, the Georg (hehehe @ebon peak )
I mean at this point I think Dornblüth isn’t really making too many of their watches
Dresden watch company based

speaking of quad watches, the Reverso Hybris Mechanica
I can make it leather
Wow...
yep that’s the i/SA on most watches you’ll see
That is absolutely mesmerising
not sure leather would suit it but you do you, whatever floats your boat, horses for courses, etc
Leather would absolutely not fit a 15 year old
Probably retailed for like five times the cost of my car lol
I'm happy with the plastic
how much is the price of your car
Never too young for leather
111,000 rm (24,000 €)
Nato?
Fabric
try 66.6x the price of your car
It's not the alliance right
yes it is
NATO straps were invented by the British military and made standard throughout NATO
They're an easy to fit form of strap which means if one of your spring bars fail, the watch doesn't fall off
Wait I'm actually gonna Google this
And that was retail? @normal cave
that’s what it sold for
so the NATO requires both spring bars or two layers of fabric to fail before your watch falls off
however, I wear a NATO because a) they're stupid cheap and b) they look cool
Oh it's that strap
...yes
The uhh
^
it’s absolutely beautiful from JLC
talk about coming back with a bang
They're like the backpack straps
like for years they introduced nothing great, everyone starting rating them lowly, and they come back with that
broke my watch strap today lollers :DDDDDDD
Oofers

nice watch

nice watch
nice watch

Would be for most 14 year olds. It’s a nice timepiece 🙂
now I'm 18, 200e is huge but not that huge
Lange Zeitwerk Perpetual
hot
Why it go to 31
because a month can have 31 days
Does it know when theres a leap year
of course
Mad
ye, perpetual calander
my g shock has one too
but obviously a mechanical watch doin it is more impressive
since each day has 1440 minutes, so does the Zeitwerk move that amount each day
1440 times each day, for years
damn impressive
also are those pushers at the bottom?
what do they do
yep
Adjust the zeitwerk display ?
or is it a minute repeater
unlikely ig
pushers for adjusting the date
no that’s a separate watch
Zeitwerk Minute Repeater
ahhh i see
the one on the right is for hours, one on the left is for the day iirc
and then you can use the crown to just adjust minutes as you wish
that’s a rather large moon phase
I love it though
I absolutely love the hand-crafted details on the dial
Your mother has a rather large moon phase
my watch's display changes 518,400 times a day
give or take
What’s the watch?
any watch with a 6bps second hand
Vacheron Constantin Métiers D'art Mécaniques Gravées — Tourbillon
Well then you'll love this
Vacheron Constantin Métiers D'art Les Aérostiers — Bagnols
@normal cave look at my invention
ultimate practicality
Epic growl
oh yeah its big brain time
.av @thorn spindle
was gonna say buddy 🤣
I don’t think a dog can count as a watch
kinda is... they wake up at the same time... eat at the same time... poop at the same time...
I mean I get what you mean
obviously they’re not capable of actually telling time to a degree of precision
it’s one of Lange’s most complex watches
you’ve got the perpetual calendar, moonphase, tourbillon, chain and fusée, rattrapante chrono
like I said before, 1319 parts
Definitely looks like it
sooo two second hands
they can catch up to one another right
Lange describes it as “a basic rattrapante chronograph”
imagine being so god-tier you describe rattrapante chronographs as “basic”
b a s i c
yeah that's just flexing at this rate

independently stoppable second hands, and yes they can catch up to each other
well it’s not a double split
but yeah they move in sync until you press the chronograph stopping button for one of them, and then one stops, and then you can stop the other one
hence the term “separately stoppable”
they move in sync until you stop one of them
getting them to move in sync isn’t that hard, even getting them to stop independently isn’t too tough
the real complication of a rattrapante mechanism comes with the catch-up part
well no
kinda
a flyback just means it “flies back” to 60 when you reset it
the main challenge with rattrapante chronos are knowing where the 2nd seconds hand has to catch up with the other seconds hand
it’s really tough to make that mechanism and also really tough to make it reliable
true
because it’s almost like you have to give the 2nd seconds hand its own consciousness
it should know where the other hand is, and then catch up and move in sync
we do this through levers and cams
and some interesting gear ratio stuff
and then slap a tourbillon and perpetual calander on it cos why the fuck not
don’t forget the chain and fusée
the chain and fusée is one of the oldest mechanisms to make a watch more reliable
oh
it’s essentially a chain wound around a barrel which unwinds at a specific rate, hence limiting the amount the mainspring can unwind
when a spring is fully wound of course, it just wants to spring open
oh yeahhh
but as it loses energy, it unwinds less
yes this leads to uneven distribution of power to the escapement
and so by making the mainspring unwind at a specific rate, you’re essentially always ensuring the same amount of power goes to the escapement
much the same way a tourbillon exposes the escapement mechanism to the forces of gravity to regulate it all the time, the chain and fusée lets the mainspring unwind at a specific rate
ooooo
yeah, that’s the chain and fusée
it’s just that Lange didn’t bother to show you the chain and fusée mechanism
Bruh
tbf the dial is already pretty busy
Makes sense
anyways its bed time now
i sleep
have a great rest of your day
and thanks for the info
in fact, something interesting about the chain and fusée mechanism is that it’s essentially an infinitely variable gearbox
similar to the one Williams used
oh yeah it actually does look similar to a cvt
it is essentially a CVT
and something epic just for you rocket, is that “fusée” is French for “rocket”
oh what
well in that case

so about that g shock i accidentally broke
its back! And its probably never getting repaired
because to repair it costs half as much as the watch itself
indeed
here it is
it looks more beat up that it should have
yeah true
o7
well at least i can say i broke a G-shock

don't smash your apple watch on your desk challenge
1969 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Paul Newman "John Player Special"
wow
One of the rarest Daytonas ever produced
can't wait for the Swatchtona
On auction for an estimated bid of €1.4 million
waiting lists for a Cosmoswatch, now that would be funny
The Daytona was originally gonna be called the Le Mans, I do wonder if Big Bill France had anything to do with that not happening
Like the story afaik is just... "Rolex decided to not call it the Le Mans"
swatch x omega moonswatch
omega x swatch metal mecha swatch
Couldn't have anything to do with idk, one of the greatest marketers on earth at the time wanting it named after his race event?
Naaah
I remember...i think it was a watchfinder video mentioning this
Petronas watch

mind blown
I always puted my watch on my right hand
As if I write with my right hand

idk
meh you might just get used to it
no more awkward than on your left really
oh
Little flea market grab

Can't complain much, it has an obscure little Japanese movement and was the equivalent of barely 5 pounds
Got home and rigorously cleaned it
yeah that looks like a 6
Saw a lot of Tudor watches on display at a jewellers earlier
The Pelagos is so blue irl
Taking your watch off after a long and tiring day is an underrated pleasure
I take mine off to shower and thats it tbh
If it was waterproof it would probably stay on
Haven’t got a watch tan yet
I have
i love white dial watches at the moment
See I’ve always thought that one was a little busy
I love the white dial ofc but eh there’s something off proportionally
Dive… style… chrono??
Side note: if this watch was £500 instead of like £2000 it’d be amazing
oo that's a nice watch
Dial reminds me of the original cosmographs
except this has only 2 subdials ofc
- date window
it's apparently super thick though so it doesn't wear super well
aw :(
plus, again, two grand lol
is that due to it being an automatic movement with a chronograph module slapped on? Instead of it being integrated like Zenith did
o o f
super thick, auto doesn't have a domed crystal
ohh
manual isn't automatic and is barely thinner cuz it does have a domed crystal
oh
it's a great watch for £700
2k is quite steep
it's just... it's a £1500 - £2000 watch
legit
it's more
that's a good point
it's a lot more tbf
nearly three times the price
but yeah i mean if you're not married to a chrono
the Black Bay 41 is like £2500 or something
o
they're all like £5700
even on the cheap end they're £3000 for a used one
that's pretty good
the Black Bay 41 (unless they release a 39) is my next luxury watch
oooo
might take a couple years to save for it but hey
looks like a good all rounder
and it's like half the price of a OP 41 *at retail *
and you're never gonna get mugged for it
but any watch nerd is gonna notice it
Truee
and you can wear it with anything
yess
it's not explicitly a diver or whatever
it fits everything
suit, jeans and t shirt, whatever
yeaaa
I need to go try on one tbf, idk if the 41 actually is too big
I have skinny wrists
they released the Steel and Gold version in 39 this year so i'm pretty sure they're gonna put the steel only in 39 next year
ooo
36 is just too small for me
A Tudor will defo be my next big purchase
36 is tiny
it isn't tiny
38-39 feels like the sweet spot
i'd say 39-41 for me but yeah
39-42 for me
my hamilton's a 42 but it wears really small
My smallest is a 38 and it disappears when I wear certain shirts
I just think it depends on the watch tbh
Yeah, tbf, it is a pretty incognito timepiece so it makes sense
like the 36 mil Explorer probably isn't disappearing
but it's also not like... in the way
How thick?
Oh wow that’s thick
Been looking at white dials a lot and these two are really similar
i mean it's a no-brainer really
if that Tag's bezel rotates
look at it with the bezel not aligned at 12
it's clearly not designed to be used
It does
the real answer is wait for Tudor to make a white dial Black Bay pro though anyway
those unframed markers
I was looking at Hamilton dive watches earlier
Some are £900 and the others are £645
The difference is one has 10 bar of water resistance and the other has 30 bar
my Hamilton is 100 metres
but it's a pilots watch
even if you don't intend to go diving... 100 metres on a diver feels stingy
i mean in general i guess i just don't think of Hamilton as a dive watch brand anyway
like i tend to think either super classic, or field + pilots
44mm )_)
⌚
Oh shiz it has a. Strap
Its like the trademark emoji ™
™️
lovely
yeah 44mm somthing
hot
I do have a soft spot for this watch
its very pretty
most of the OP experience for 1% of the price or whatever it is lmao
which one is it again?
snxs?
If it’s got the 4R movement then it’s pretty good
The older one doesn’t even hack and hand wind so you gotta do the ol Seiko shuffle
My watch loses like 10 min per day lmfao
I agree
Abstinence
The fact that the screws aren’t matched properly to create a circle pissed me off
are there actually any plans to release the MoonSwatch online?
Ah ok

I actually like the color a bit darker
Is Timex good
S-tier
A. Lange & Söhne
S tier: VC, Patek Phillipe, Rolex, A Lange and Söhne
jaeger-lecoultre
Didn't put Casio in S+
why is mont Blanc in b, and why the fuck is grand seiko on d
Otherwise pretty gud ig
I'd put tag lower
Wouldn't change much besides that
Why?
I agree with all of that apart from GS being in D
i just dont like tag a lot
True
Mont Blanc is in B because they make some good shit and some really awful shit, very inconsistent. It's also not primarily a watch brand, it's a luxury goods conglomerate that makes watches here and there
GS is in D because I find it overpriced BS
cries
I respect Seiko much more than GS
I'd take my money to JLC instead
If I had 5 grand I wouldn’t buy a GS
I don’t think you’d find a JLC for the price of a GS
They have stuff from upwards of 9k and GS has been charging upwards of 10 for some of it's stuff, which I find relatively uninspiring. So if given 10k, I would most certainly take it to JLC
If I was given 10K to spend on a watch I genuinely don’t know what I would buy
if I was given 10K to spend on a watch I wouldn’t
I'd get a seiko for around 600
I’d save it and buy a Lange
then use the rest on somthing else lmao
for me it’s either a cheap-ish watch or a Lange
Actually I would just go to tag and tudor
I’m very clear on what I want
Based
I dont think I could pull off a Lange tho
too big
my wrists are skinny
I'd go for a Tudor and a Cartier. A Black Bay and a two-tone Santos
okay now that's class
o
which do you pick
It’s so hard
t r i p l e s p l i t 🙏
I’d love a Lange, VC, Patek etc
But I also want a functional watch I can wear daily
I’d have to decide between the Lange Triple Split or the Richard Lange Handwerkskunst
So tag, Tudor etc
A g-shock to tell the time, a triple split to just stare at
If I could get two watches for free it would be slightly easier
I have that already
Anything from the VC Metiers d'Art collection
I really like my citizen but I would take a Tudor or a tag over it any day
VC definitely my first pick
in terms of complex watches
These beauties
🤌
🫦
Moon phase
GMT and world timer for me
the tourbillon
yes its practically useless
but look at it
As for a functional complication its the chronograph for me
The tourbillion is useless but it’s really fucking cool
I also really like perpetual calendars
unless you’re F. P. Journe
because then you’ll invent a problem that doesn’t exist to sell a solution to the problem you just made and price it ridiculously
What does a tourbillion do
so, do you know what an escapement is?
No
oh boy, explaining a tourbillon without knowing what an escapement is
alright I’ll explain both
so, in a mechanical watch, we use the mainspring to provide power for something called the escapement assembly
the job of the escapement assembly is to provide an equal distribution of power to the geartrain which tells the time, starting at the very bottom with the seconds hand. the escapement assembly works by a perpetually back-and-forth rotation of the balance wheel, which then flicks the palette fork back and forth at regular intervals, causing the seconds gear to rotate
it’s also why you hear the classic “tick tick tick” sound in a mechanical watch
now since the escapement assembly has this incredibly important job of keeping the time constant and accurate, any disturbing forces have to be counteracted so that the timekeeping stays constant and reliable
following?
Yes
before we had wristwatches, we had pocket watches
now the trouble with pocket watches is that gravity exists, and that means the escapement assembly is pulled downward to the earth. it also means if you change altitude or if you go over some particularly bumpy roads — as was common back then — or, if you took it out and changed its orientation, you changed the spread of gravity acting on the escapement assembly
this means that the escapement assembly would get thrown off, as the balance wheel is a very delicate piece of the watch
and because the escapement is thrown off, the accuracy of the watch is thrown off too
so, to counteract this, Louis Breguet, a French watchmaker, devised the following. by constantly exposing all sides of the escapement to the forces of gravity, the negative effects of changing a watch’s orientation or altitude could be negated
to do this, he thought of the tourbillon. what that tourbillon does is exactly what I’ve described above. it does this by constantly rotating the entire escapement mechanism on a fixed axis, so that all parts of the escapement mechanism are exposed to the effects of gravity
now this did improve the accuracy of watches. however, soon we got wristwatches. the thing with wristwatches is that humans are constantly exposing them to the forces of gravity all the time; swinging our arms, turning our wrists, etc
so in that sense, the tourbillon makes 0 sense on a wristwatch as it serves no purpose. the human is already exposing the entire escapement movement within their wristwatch to the effects of gravity; the job the tourbillon did in a pocket watch
so what did we came up with to fix the problem with wrist watches
Thanks for the explanation
which problem?
gravity, you say the tourbillon is useless.. but it seems to fix the issues of gravity
in pocket watches, yes
ot|watches
in wristwatches, it’s redundant
the purpose of the tourbillon was to expose the entire escapement assembly to the forces of gravity. this was done because the pocket watch was often left in one position for most of its use
so, if you changed its orientation or changed altitude or went over bumpy road, the forces acting on different parts of the escapement would change, causing a cumulative inaccuracy
so, by rotating the escapement constantly, we expose all sides of the escapement assembly to the forces of gravity while it remains in the same position
however, while wearing a wristwatch, we are constantly changing its orientation while walking or grabbing things, turning our wrists to check the time, etc. this means that all sides of the escapement are constantly being exposed to the forces of gravity naturally, so there’s no need for a tourbillon to do it for us
ahhh makes sense 😄
we are the tourbillon
so wristwatches with one, they have it for..?
showing off, really
just cool innit
it’s a watchmaker’s flex
tbf the word is cool
“look, I can make the most delicate and intricate part of the watch’s movement go spinny wooooo”
and yes, making a tourbillon is incredibly tough
Louis Breguet has to be commended for his genius and his innovation
here’s a basic diagram of a tourbillon
something interesting to note is also Breguet’s dream of making every side of the escapement exposed to gravity
and he envisioned a tourbillon that didn’t just rotate on the horizontal axis, but on the vertical one too
Girard-Perregaux realised this idea in their tri-axial tourbillon concept
a spring, like every mechanical watch
@ebon saffron check this out
uh no, you need to wind the spring
the spring powers the escapement assembly
the escapement assembly regulates how fast the gears spin
It’s amazing how people can think of these things
that’s how GP’s tri-axial tourbillon would rotate
truly, exposing all of the escapement assembly to the forces of gravity
thinking is one thing, constructing it is another
I’m more impressed by how they were able to construct this
yeah the construction is really impressive as well
I have quite a few ideas in my head, but no clue on how I’ll even construct them
my next watch will be an automatic
i love the idea of having a watch which has no electrical parts
idk if that's useful, but it's very pretty
oh no it’s not really useful lol
but like I said, it’s a flex
you make your escapement spin in 1 direction
I make my escapement spin in 3 directions
we are not the same.
my escapement spins in 3 directions therefore i am better than you on every single level
my escapement actually moves around the perimeter of the watch dial while spinning in 3 dials
so I’m better than you
oh the Vacheron supercompication?
yeah, the supercomplication
they don’t actually sell it
it’s another “on request” situation, which means “give us a million € or get the fuck away”
yeah insane
the Reference 57260 was commissioned by a collector in the Americas who wishes to remain anonymous. He challenged Vacheron Constantin's Atelier Cabinotiers division to create the world's most complicated watch
imagine being wealthy enough to challenge one of the most prestigious watchmakers
lol that name
Rich people things
hey Vacheron, I’m in the market for some complex watches. what do you have?
well, sir, we make many complications in watches. our watchmakers can make 57 complications for you to choose from to suit your needs. here they all are.
hm, yes, good. I’ll take it.
which ones, sir?
all.
all? all 57? but sir, that would be impossible to fit in one watch!
do it pussy
do it or no balls

i’m still looking for one
ohh this is hot, i didn't see it on the seiko website
ideally less than the price of a Hamilton, lol
which is around £500 iirc

Are smart watches ok here
Got this as a birthday gift from my uncle, only wore a gshock before this
Never had smart watch
Its really cool
Really love the bpm counter
I have alot of anxiety when it comes to my heart rate
Its nice that I can actually monitor it now
The thing that I dont like is that when I use the workout feature, it doesnt have an auto pause when I come to a stop
And because of that I get ridiculous average speeds like 6kph over the course of 30mins with a distance of 4km
Other than that, Its really useful
Awesome
