The penalty wasn't for the 'not taking the escape road properly' though, it was for 'leaving the track and gaining an advantage'.

you can’t let everything on lap one happen, then let verstappen barge into the side of lewis, overtake him off track, and then give a penalty when lewis does anything remotely similar
