only 2 votes for moss is crazy, it should be wayyy closer and imo moss did better but lost out thanks to reliability
I'm obviously a bit too young to remember that season very well, but I feel like the gap is this much because Fangio is just such an iconic driver, and everyone knows he was one of the best
I won't put Fangio's German GP performance against him, but at almost all other races Moss was arguably the better driver
in Argentina, Moss qualified on pole by over a second but his throttle link broke at the start, he recovered to 8th with the fastest lap
in Monaco he took the lead at the start but crashed into the barrier, race reports are split on whether it was a suspension issue or driver error so I'll give Fangio that one
he missed the French GP due to injury sustained in an accident from a different race, not of F1
by now Fangio had won all 3 main races(im not including the 500 here obviously)and Moss hadn't scored a single point, but he won the British GP by sharing a car with Tony Brooks when his own one failed, without that failure of his own car he would have had max points from the win
he struggled with gearbox issues in the German GP, I doubt he would have won without them considering Fangio's performance
then he dominated the final 2 races of the season, beating fangio, but it was too late to catch him
The fact remains that the reason why the poll is this much of a gap is that Fangio is just a much better known name than Moss
