the old times were harder in the sense dying was a real possibility and safety was much worse, and the cars often had manual transmissions
but modern F1 is harder imo because the field is closer than ever
both in terms of cars and drivers
they are bigger with poorer visibility from the cockpit and have much more downforce therefore more G forces in the corners
80s and 90s were harder due to many reasons
Engine blows were more common
It was more dangerous so the drivers mentally had to go through more
