we were also able to take day trips no issues as long as we fully charged the batteries the night before

Idk about your American state. But in my Canadian province, if it has a rebuild title and gets in any kind of accident; automatic write off

Here if the insurance company deems the car totaled they usually give you three options
1: they pay you and you get a new car
2: they pay you and you fix the car yourself
3: they pay you and they replace the car directly

But insurance companies here are scams so they don't want to pay for anything, so they'll total a car if the damage is anywhere near above what they want to pay so they can write you a check instead and get you to pay more to them

Manitoba has public insurance, so my insurance dollars go towards fixing my and other cars involved in a collision (but also collectively all cars), some road infrastructure, and whatnot.

The nice thing is, any medium incident can be fixed for $500 (and free if you're deemed not at fault). The problem today is that all these new cars are so complicated, that they end up writing off the car because chasing down some hidden electrical issue just isn't worth it
