Prost tested for Ligier during his sabbatical in 1992
He used Erik Comas’ helmet as pictured
Yeah. Senna rushed over to him and helped him
because ayrton saved him
Ayrton number 1
Guess the year
Correct!
1983
DAMNNNNN
Ya
Oh, yeah. It says cafe do brasil on the sides
Ooo true
The 183T just looks like a clone of the MP4/2, but with black wings
and a worse car
early 80s cars were cigarette boxes on wheels
The 182 was Alfa Romeo’s best car
i mean really the only distinction between them is the wing color, the slightly more white rear livery and the alfo romeo logo
Yeah
A rather overlooked Mclaren
yea
FAT
87?
ye
classic
i love the aesthetics of 1980 and 1982 cars

Nice
Ayrton Senna’s final drive by the paddock, 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, Lap 7.
sad
Me winning the 1957 German Grand Prix
In the 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix, Stirling Moss went out of his way to help Mike Hawthorn, who would go on to win the title at Moss's expense. Stirling did not think twice about an honourable act that, in a sad reflection of changing priorities and pressures, would be deemed totally ridiculous today. Imagine Lewis Hamilton going to protest a penalty Max Verstappen had or Ayrton Senna protesting a penalty Prost received.

If you're gonna do that, can you also say which car model is on the picture you're posting?
Ferrari F2004
is it now
No
1999, the front wing is black
30 year old Jim Clark, 37 year old Graham Hill, and 37 year old Stirling Moss, 1966.
and higher nose
Baby Damon Hill surrounded by his dad Graham Hill, Bruce McLaren, Stirling Moss, Jo Bonnier, Wolfgang von Trips, and Tony Brooks.
oh those, half were dead before he was 15 yo 😦
and ironically the only person to win a WDC apart from his dad was himself
all that talent yet the baby has more WDCs than most of them
Actually all but 2 were dead when he was 15
ye when i counted it was actually 2/3rds
brooks placed runner up, and is last living 50s winner, von trips died in 61, bonnier died in 72, moss is known as the best driver to never win a wdc and died in 2020, bruce died in 70 and graham, the only wdc died in 75
damn
Mika turns 53 today
It’s kinda hard to believe that Brooks is the only driver from the 50’s that is still alive
winner*
last winner
Also, isn’t Jackie Stewart the last surviving WDC from the 1960’s?
happy birthday 🐐

1992
Day 3 of cars that won the WCC:
1960: Cooper
Correct
Day 2 of the Formula 1 WDC runner-ups:
1952 - Giuseppi Farina, Ferrari
ohhh
why does sonics look feel like hes gonna devour prost
we all know that was senna in a costume trying to snatch a peek of the car
this proves my point
so thats why he went to williams for 1994
the Coloni C3, when Subaru entering as a factory engine supplier couldn't save Coloni from constant DNPQ's
ironically when Coloni ditched the Subaru engines for Ford DFR V8's, their results would improve to just DNQ's
may i ask what is dnpq?
Did not pre qualify
oof
zakspeed
Speaking of a string of DNPQ’s, the 1989 Zakspeed had DNPQ’d for nearly all of the rounds of the ‘89 season
It only managed to qualify for Brazil and Japan
the Yamaha engine was very bad
f3000 engine
Yamaha never had the best success in F1
2 pods
and a near-win at Hungary in 1997
if u want engine but cant get the good bois just get ford
What about Ilmor or Judd?
idk
Ilmor = Mercedes
Judd was crap
no need to expand further
and yeah
mercedes = unreliable v10s
I mean, it even got Coloni out of pre-qualifying in 1990 so
yea
The Yamaha of Hill in 97 was basically a Judd
Judd and Yamaha had an alliance with each other at the time iirc
ye, after 92, Yamaha is Yamaha x Judd
wonder how that 97 Yamaha would've fared in that year's Williams
not very well i reckon
put the 1991 benetton spec ford v8 into the 97 williams
was asking that because I was wondering how good the 97 Arrows really was
||Put an old Tag Porsche V6 in the 1988 FW12||
ah, so the Supertec way
it got aerodynamically good for Hungary, when Barnard fixed some issues
then the car was okay, but still held back by its weak engine
probably a bit better than a Jordan
people dont know that judd was formed by jack brabham
||put an old qualifying spec bmw v6 into the current merc||
Bmw never made V6’s in F1
Don’t you mean I4’s?
yeeaa
they never made inline-6s in F1 neither 😦
keep forgetting it wasnt just v6s in the turbo era
mercedes turbo hybrid i4 when
maybe 2025
What if F1 used 2 stroke inline 3’s?
isnt the 2025 engine regs just increasing rpm limiter and maybe some other stuff
hmm
it's too far ahead in the future, we don't know
its quite ironic how some of the best teams in the v6 turbo era didnt use v6 turbos
The best teams being....
the v6 turbo era is right now
since the fact it's a V6 is forced in the regs now, it wasn't then
Alfa Romeo even had a V8T
V6 turbo hybrid is now
yes
the 80s is just the turbo era, if we must put a label on it
the only top team of the time not to use a V6 for their turbo engine is Brabham which used a BMW inline-4
Renault, Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, Lotus all used a V6
which is why i specified for their turbo engine
everyone (except Renault) transitionned from an NA engine to a Turbo engine
Yes they did? What?
Oh wait BMW
Sorry
All the other teams during the turbo era used either zakspeed or hart inline 4’s and the Cossie V8’s
ye if you had no money, you'd use Hart's inline-4
nobody bar Zakspeed used the Zakspeed
Just ask Toleman and the first Haas team
they should've been able to afford a BMW at least
although Lola had the Ford turbo in 86
Yeah. The GBA V6 wasn’t as good as the other V6’s, sadly.
nope
oh?
it was so good they already dropped it in 88 when the turbos were still allowed
maybe, but then even Benetton, the works Ford team dropped it in favour of the DFR
The DFR was a good engine
they did good to start it 1 year early
they even had a solid 88 campaign without a turbo engine
3rd in WCC
Good thinking by them

Rare cursed picture of Jackie Stewart with normal hair on his wedding day, 1962.
The work of Mauro Forghieri himself
I love those too...
I believe Red Bull used them
I’m assuming they were made very low, so that more air would pass over the car

2005 doesn't count as classic
someone has a picture of a mclaren of 1996 in monaco ?
oh thanks
Better with 8

That marlboro looks weird not in the MP4/6
Yea
Day 7 of the Formula 1 WDC runner-ups:
1957 - Stirling Moss (3), Vanwall
fun fact about Vanwall, all 3 designers of their cars have their creations win the WCC (Owen Maddock at Cooper, Colin Chapman at Lotus, he also drove a Vanwall for the 1956 French GP btw, and obviously Frank Costin who designed the car above, with Vanwall)
Day 7 of cars that won the WCC:
1965: Lotus 33

OTD in 1970.. Jochen Rindt was crowned World Champion, alongside Team Lotus...
He is the first, and hopefully last, driver to be posthumously crowned champion
That 1970 season really showed how good he was
Despite getting killed wih a few races left to go nobody was able to catch up to him
he was killed in that race
hey you should make an OTD chain
You should make an social media accounts for these chains, you will surely gain a lot of fans
probably
It's legit vintage photos, do you want to see new photos without the original drivers?
no like
Pretty these vintage photos didn't have visible pixels back in the days :p
Fun Fact: The Tyrell 002 used in 1971-72 was essentially the Tyrell 001 but with design changes to fit Francois Cevert as he was taller than Jackie Stewart
yeah, these weren't really models, but more chassis
nobody drove the 002 but Cevert, nobody drove the 003 but Stewart..
the first real "series" produced Tyrrell would be the 006
yeah the 002 was Cevert the 003 was for Stewart in '71 and the 004 in '72 but these were just different designs of the 001 and the 005 wasn't that good and was replaced by the 006 used by both Cevert and Stewart
ye
has there been any pushrod engine in f1......ever?

The Minardi M194 was a Formula One car designed by Aldo Costa and Gustav Brunner and built by Minardi for the 1994 season. It was introduced at that year's Canadian Grand Prix to replace the Minardi M193B. The car was again powered by the Ford HBD V8 engine.
Minardi team drivers during 1994 were Pierluigi Martini and former Grand Prix winner Mic...

where do you guys find the photos?
ive never done a deep dive but im curious if you just use google or a specific search engine
A bittersweet season for the team
just search for the car and find a high resolution image from like motorsport.com or something
^^ or go to the F1Porn subreddit
i just use google, personally

It'd be out of context F1 if the champagne bottle was non existent

You can't zoom or is it just still annoying?
didn't think about zooming 😛
Oh oof
I love the 1974 cars aesthetic

Alboreto
man I love these old watch ads
especially the last few lines:
We suspect though that Senna doesn’t just wear his Tag-Heuer watch because it’s water resistant to 200 metres, but more likely for its precision timing, screw-in crown, double safety bracelet, uni-directional turning bezel and mineral glass.
And just in case Mr. Senna doesn’t win the next Grand Prix, our watches are also shock resistant
lmfao, that’s some good advertising there
Hehe
when was this
1994
Lola were testing a car back then weighing a potential F1 entry in 1995, but they couldn't do it since their car was illegal
ohh okay thanks

I'll join in with this
Day 1 of posting World Champions for both titles

1972: Lotus 72D (bottom)
Mate why are u doing two days at once
Lmaooo everyone out here tryna copy u @slow grail
It ain't copying if it isn't the same exact thing
He did WDC, i'm doing WCC and apparently dwang is doing both
ball and land o lakes are both doing this but separately so this is a little repetitive but its still cool to see both at once
i wanted to time it
I have an idea after WCC but I won't tell
Thank you for that?
what happened to the guy that was doing f1 winners for each season
no im talking about race winners
same idea though
Ideas are free
The person that made the cellular phone
Other people made cellular phones like theirs
Do you think they complained?
😂
it looks more bumpy than smooth lol
that's because it's old onboard
the cars were bumpy back then
regardless of that, look at how comparatively little countersteer he has to do
he's not fighting the car
ye Prost was that kind of smooth driver like Stewart
while Senna wrestled the car a lot
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auXfAHHNSFo you know the classic
Go onboard with Ayrton Senna as he demonstrates exactly why he became known as the King of Monaco

there's a thing that confuses me: how Schumacher managed to beat Senna to P3 WDC in 1992, but not in 1993
Senna had more retirements than Schumi in 1992
hmm indeed
Day 2 of posting World Champions for both titles
1959 WDC: Jack Brabham (Cooper)
1959 WCC: Cooper
Would Micheal Schumacher be considered classic
depends on the year
His prime
"anything formula one before 2001"
@late crag you forgot today
I live in US so timezone mixup
By the end of this it won't be f1 classic anymore
2014-2020 be like

The MP4/4, MP4/10, and MP4/11
shark fin
yes
the nose of the 95 car was so thick
thicc nose
There is something so hideous about that variation of the MP4/10
as thick as Nigel then
one of the early re-adopters of the shark fin
mp4-11 steering wheel was thicc too for some reason
looked like it had an airbag
yeah many cars did at the time
think the williams also had this bump
ok no they didn't
when u crash instead of breaking ur skull on the wheel u break ur skull on that bump
they had one somewhat in 97
mp4-16
had smol bump
i think all of the mclaren merc wheels had that small bump
after this
not the 2011 wheel
or the 2010 one
up until the mp4-23 they had a bump for the mercedes logo
after that it was just flat
wonder why they kept it and why it was there
https://twitter.com/Rebstew_/status/1448250990298341376 hopefully they answer
@McLarenF1 Hello! Noticed you had a bump / cushion on the steering wheels for a long time, until 2009 if i can see right, can you tell me what that was for?
yea
This is one of if not muh fave F1 steering wheels
the nose of that 95 Sauber is hot. also the RB colours were dope
Underrated livery
very
was that actually real what
that looks so unsafe
did they actually use it in races or was it only tested
i have no idea but i cant find any other pictures of the wheel for that car
so it was probably that for the whole season
for 1997 they changed it
Fave Sauber les go
and
it would obstruct the driver if got stuck in anyway
and if u have to evacuate in less than 6 seconds then it could be deadly (worst case senario)
you don’t even need airbags in f1
nobody’s head slams into the steering wheel anyways
yea harness
Not anymore, but Stirling Moss' racing career ended up in his steering wheel back in early 1962
don;'t know if they had safety belts then
they had
because that would just be insane
wouldn't be so sure
they were more frightened of being trapped in a fire
yea
than being thrown out of their car
this is 1960s f1, everyone was insane
idk if it was restored
no that looks like a regular car
probably the 68 Ferrari
i think you're right
yep no belts or anything like it
bathtub racing
yeah basically a bathtub with wheels and an engine
f1 back then was a gokart with a huge engine in the back
and drivers who just hoped it wouldn’t flip over or blow up
👍
https://twitter.com/sennatheking/status/1448341720673013766 this pic made me realise.. they probably had to design a special jack for the rear of this car?
I love those diffusers
Day 4 of posting World Champions for both titles

Inline 5 f1 car when?
That time passed a while back
could be in 2025 if VAG joins with Audi. Are we sure the next regs will keep the V6 formula?
Maybe not, but F1 teams are not fond of Inlines due to their inability to be fully stressed
Day 5 of posting World Champions for both titles
1962 WDC: Graham Hill (BRM)
1962 WCC: BRM
ah yes i remember this bit now.
Can anyone send me pics of senna having battles with other cars on track
Uh oh
love how they just stared at each other
Day 18 of cars that won the WCC:
1976: Ferrari 312T2
Rip Lauda, Villeneuve, and Reutemann…
Such a romantic story
I mean we can make it into a romantic story haha
many of you know the MP4/4 as the most dominant car in formula 1 ever, and a lot of you know that it doesn’t have an airbox (that was the MP4/5)
but there was a version of the MP4/4 built for testing purposes with (yes) an airbox, as you can see there. the MP4/4B was used for testing, and you can see that it kinda looks like MP4/4 and an MP4/5 that had a weird baby.
anyways… the MP4/4B

As featured in best motoring
also this absolute monstrosity, the MP4/5B high nose
Thats ugly but cool
They didn't understand what made the high nose efficient
The front wing must be low, and ideally separate from thr nose
Yes, the Benetton dudes are the first to do it. But as of 1990 only Tyrrell had a high nose
or even better from the same year (1990) the Tyrrell 019
ye, I think they did it first in 91?
Yep
with the B191
very cool
the Tyrrell did it kinda in 1990 and McLaren wanted to replicate that
obviously no success since they didn’t race with that horrible nose
Yiu can guess why: it changes the front aero completely
I think the last time we saw the high nose cone with the low hanging wing was 2013
yeah
Put the front wing back where it was near the ground, make it one piece, attach it to the nose with 2 pillars and you're good to go
it wasn’t something that was really explored
It was very much a thing in 2014 but tbe dong hid it somehow
Yeah. I suppose they weren't too sure what to do with that. It chnaged the aero philosophy a lot actually
You could make the floor work a lot more
Interesting did not know I wonder if this was one of the 6 chassis’s of the 4/4
it wasn’t
it was a test version with the airbox
they refined that idea to make the MP4/5
it never raced in a GP
@topaz cape yeah this isn't exactly #classic-motorsport material, as it's post-2001

I might be wrong, sorry if I am
technically the Lotus 79 was the car used at the end of the 78 season so
but yes they used both 78 and 79 in 1978
Yeah, both

I was listening a podcast from 2010 which featured Lauda for a bit
They asked him why he used to steal John Watson's qualifying tyres, he just said, "he wasn't looking. Win the race, go home."
Then they asked him if Jenson button was a worthy champion.
"Yes, he won the races, got the points, wins the championship, goes home."
I guess this can be a classic story... Lauda used to pocket Wattys tyres
😩😩😩
1986 for the Mclaren and and 2001 for the Toyota
Weird
It says 2000
Williams fw22 - 2000 testing
“Williams ditched the two red liveries of the previous seasons and went back to form with a navy and white look following the tie up with German engine supplier, BMW. Looking like one of the BMW art cars of the past, the FW22 test livery was sponsorless and started a lineage of cars that would follow the same tone for the next decade or so despite the loss of BMW in 2006.”
