Alesi looks like the cool old uncle
he is the cool old uncle
lets go brooks
Senna didn’t drive through the chicane in ‘89, but he went accordingly around the bollards in the exit road?
Or should he have been wheeled to the chicane
I don’t get what he did wrong
He cut the chicane and continued the race
yeah but the disqualification was kind of a bad call considering the next year they said they wouldnt disqualify those who went through the escape road instead of the chicane
🤷♂️

6 drivers have scored a pole position for their first race. of those, 3 went on to become world champions: Giuseppe Farina (first race ever), Mario Andretti and Jacques Villeneuve
I like Hamilton at McLaren
@neon vigil not classic! you should post this in #formula-1 instead
I’ve never seen this car before
But on the other hand it’s too similar to the lambo modena 291
I think it originated from it
Makes sense
Yeah it did
i thought it is though
because it had the old mclaren
mp4
i thought it would but mb
classic cars in f1 2020 were so fun
I wish they'll bring back f1 classics in the f1 games
Merc sidepods
Nope
Turbos were banned after the 1988 season
same
No it was banned from the 1989 season leaving only 3.5L
Ah
Thanks
When was the ‘any cylinder only 3.5L’ rule stop
What are some of you guys favourite old f1 footage.
In 1995 it was 3.0L
Thanks
2006 was 2.4L
Then 1.6L
Lol
Lol
When did the any cylinder rule start
Something like
1968-1995?
Um
Idk
The first engine rule was 1947
4.5 L atmospheric and 1.5 L supercharged engines
According to Wikipedia but I’m not totally sure
Yeah it would be 68
Cos that’s when DFV came
Also
What the f is atmospheric?
What does that mean
Naturally Aspirated probably
yes
atmospheric means the air going into the engine is at the normal atmospheric pressure
Naturally Aspirated
no
they were banned after 1988
and teams started using V12s and V10s for most of the 90s
with the exception of the Ford V8 engines

what a day for france
the day Prost started becoming disliked by his own peoplr
and figured out he’d rather leave for switzerland
….and then he pissed off some renault employees which burned his road cars in his swiss residence
Wait what the hell…
Going up to Paris the same evening, Prost stops at a gas station and meets a firefighter who mistakes him for his teammate. "You did really well, Mr. Arnoux," comments the man. I'm really glad you beat this little bi*** of Prost. The French public has chosen their side. As in the past during the rivalry between cyclists Jacques Anquetil and Raymond Poulidor, it prefers the charismatic and twirling, but often losing, "lil’ guy of the countryside" to the victorious, cold and calculating gifted. Prost will never be a prophet in his country.
Poor Prost
Imagine being hated by the country you race for
and then you win 4 wdcs
ig we changed our mind when Senna came in the picture
And having a race win record that would remain unbeaten until 2001
win records went like 1973 - 1987 - 2001 - 2019(?)
arnoux never won a championship either
He just dipped when he went to Ligier
He also drew the ire of both Murray Walker and James Hunt.
When you anger both, you know you messed up badly
A real good example of a driver past their prime
Ywah 1973 was when Jackie passed Jim Clark right?
hmmm Clark had 25 wins iirc, so yes it should be in 73 that Jackie beat him

It’s beautiful
The Indy 500 used to be part of the world championship back in the 50’s
the Indy was part of the world championship before in the 50s and the early 60s
also a bit of a frequent occurence in the 50s
like in the 1957 British Grand Prix iirc
or the 1956 Argentinian Grand Prix
LOTUS = Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious
Huh. So I guess Toyota and Racing Point/Aston Martin weren't the only ones to copy a front runner's car design
Benetton was owned by Flavio Briatore
it’s not copying, it was the same car (except the Benetton in 95 and 96 had a Mugen Honda engine, and not a Renault)
like Toro Rosso was for Red Bull at some point
am i the only one who doesn't know the car below
ligier?
Yes
i meant to say Ligier. he basically was in charge of both, although Ligier was ran by Tom Walkinshaw for the day to day operation
Not copying, directly the same car with different engines
just found out my grandma did the prayer before the race at the 2001 us gp
ligier didnt do that bad that year
What a wonky looking car from that angle

Y? Politics with Balestre/Renault?
I know he was pissed with Renault french management, but idk how that has to do with french fans.
Fricking hell
Didn’t Clark beat Fangio record in 67?
Alain 21?
I’m guessing this is wins with Ferrari, Renault and ‘87 McLaren only?
Or does wins when his teammate won the title count?
I guess Lewis is now tied with Michael at 32.
Or is it WCC title?
Just the cars
No why
2021 was a championship winning car

well Kimi won once in 2003 and in 2004, 7 wins in '05, and then he won a race in 2009, 2012, and 2013 and in 2018
which accounts to 13
if my knowledge serves me right
yeah
but this
i think Fangio had 24 wins and Clark 25. so the record being beaten would be for Clarks last GP in 68
yeah at Kyalami
such a tragedy that we lost Jim Clark
the worst part was that it could have been avoided since he wanted to drive at a 1000 KM Sportscar race at Brands Hatch
but he was obligated to join that F2 race iirc

It’s also Benetton’s only win under an Italian license
gonna assume its a BRM
Schumacher better than Senna?
When did Fiffipaldi start his team and who was it sold to
Yeah Ford wanted him to race but they didn’t get their way for some reason or another
Meh, depends what you mean as better? Better as in what? Racing? Fast Laps? Consistency? Qualifying?

I’m assuming you’re talking about the car company and not the engine supplier. Cuz they were crap as an engine manufacturer
yeah the entire factory
What year
Who won the title in 66?
Brabham?
Did Hill ever beat Jimmy when they were teammates
In a season
As an overall driver
yes
no
they were only teammates in 67
and since Clark died after the first gp of 68, which he won, the answer is no 🙂

jim rathmann - 1960 indy 500
True that!
Are the TAG McLaren turbo engines of the 80s basically just Porsche engines?
Yes
Apparently the V8s used to rev >20000rpm but there was regs to lower it?
seeing as they were only teammates for 1 full season (technically 2) he did not
Jim won 4 races that year in 1967 but was out of the title fight due to reliability problems
Graham Hill only managed 3 finishes
he got 2 podiums to my knowledge
but the 1967 Lotus was pretty fast as Jimmy and Graham got 9 poles combined
the 1968 Lotus had the new aerodynamic wings and had really improved reliability
Why was the B194 the only car with that straight nose whilst others still had the classic early 90s nose curve
simply because they were the first ones to figure out that raised noses were superior in aerodynamics
Tyrrell had first created the innovation at the start of the 90s
while most F1 teams were still using the philosophy of bending the air to their aerodynamic advantage using the sloped noses
but presumably after Benetton won the title in 94 most if not all teams switched to the raised straight nose
the teams that didnt adopt the raised nose in 1995 were Ferrari, Simtek, Jordan, Footwork, Pacific, and Footwork
tyrrell 019?
this nose?
yes
no they weren’t, but they were the first to improve on that tyrrell above by having one plane fixed with 2 pylons to the nose
yeah sorry thats what I meant
the Tyrrell was a semi-decent car
Alesi got 2 2nd places iirc

Irvine just looks unnatural
Crazy Story: In the 1993 Japanese GP, Ayrton Senna who had won the race was furious at Eddie Irvine for recklessly trying to unlap himself in a heated battle with Damon Hill, Senna had been invited by Berger to drink some schnapps post-race, and Senna who was probably drunk on those schnapps entered the Jordan motorhome confronting Irvine, and just as Senna was leaving the confrontation and the motorhome, Senna turned around and launched at Irvine throwing left and right haymakers everywhere, Irvine fell down to the ground as the argument finally stopped.
The best part about all this was that there is a tape recording of this fight that only surfaced a few years ago
Listen to this episode from F1 On The Edge on Spotify. F1 icon Ayrton Senna is livid. The three-time World Champion has been enraged by a rookie, Eddie Irvine. The 1993 Japanese Grand Prix is won, but Senna hasn’t finished fighting. He’s determined to teach Irvine a lesson. The Brazilian’s furious behind-the-scenes outburst has never been heard…...

Nah both good
I think Senna was more of a star during the Late 80's and Early 90's
Prost better
They were both good but prost was good for longer
To be fair Prost (technically) outscored Senna in 1988 and 1989, so his forte would probably be the early 90’s
He’s still shown his undeniable worth and talent during the late 80’s though

right, yes sure. he wins 1990
argh, i should scrape the data and make the model myself.
Senna?
no
he wouldn't have won 88 because he retired a lot while Prost almost never did
Ah
So how come he did win it then
Bcz of the Suzuka Chichane crash
Or was that 89

he won because only the 11 best results (out of 16 races) counted towards the end result

Senna is a better racer in the rain then in the dry
1989 Canadian Grand Prix for example
A dramatic finish to a dramatic race for Ayrton Senna in Montreal. One of Senna's best ever performances in the wet even despite the result.
Yes but not a lot of people were better then him in rainy conditions back in 1990s
But of course there were those times where Senna had some mishaps in the rain. Spinning out at Spain in 1992, as well as running into the back of Martin Brundle at Adelaide in 1989
Yes. 2 or 3 accidents out of the 22 wet races he started in

yes
Keke Rosberg setting an example not taking anyone’s BS and also teamwork
1,400+ as the dynos werent able to correctly guess the correct amount, so estimation was 1,400+.
Some geez who worked/works for... Yes, even laughed at that number and said the maximum has to be 1,100 as the pressure sustain even for quali laps was too much
‘BMW engineers figured the engine produced around 1,400 hp at maximum boost, however the BMW engine dynamometer could not go beyond 1,280 bhp.’
Imagine if some random guy built one of those and shoved it into an old bmw

You know I'm always so happy to record something you hardly find on Youtube and this is one of that.
It's a Ferrari 1512 F1 (also called 512 F1) and it was the car used by Ferrari during the 1965 Formula 1 championship together with the 1964 Ferrari 158.
Born with the intention of replacing this one, the 1512 was "rejected" by John Surtees wh...
funnily enough, despite being so small and complex, this engine only had 1 issue

when they had the flat 12 engines, they were really bulletproof

That’s the Cooper-Maserati right?
Did Senna bottom out or did the steering column fail?
I don't know
Steering column it looks like cos the bottoming out wasn’t that bad
But who knows
I heard Williams or the FIA or someone had to release a super long document on the cause of the crash.
If anyone has reference plz send
Steering column I personally believe
same, the steering column theory is the one i favour
Enhanced and reproduced with CINECA's permission. For the full story behind this video, see 'Tamburello' book by Martin Zustak - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJWQhFzxyQg
A good example to back up the steering column theory
neither would ever do that because the black box was removed from the car to make sure the authorities in Italy wouldnt get the data. they would never release this info.
Some people do tend to forget that the FW16 was made to have the electronic assists from the FW14B and FW15C. But was forced to remove them to comply with the 94 regulations, which is why the FW16 was quite a difficult car to drive until the upgrades came in. Although it is debatable that the upgrades came in too late to have potentially saved Ayrton
Piquet and De Cesaris's argument after crashing into each other
“In February 1995, a 500-page report by a team of judicial investigators was handed over to Italian prosecutors which attributed Senna's crash to steering column failure caused by a pre-race adjustment.”
Is this report public?
Does anyone have public primary sources of the Senna trial?
From Italian authorities
Oh u didn't get the joke
Did senna die on impact?
I was watching a video that said a tire came loose and hit his head
He crashed and then a wishbone went through his body
What's a wish bone
A suspension arm
physically no
No. He was pronounced dead in hospital
No
but he was probably brain dead on the instant though
I hope he wasn't feeling pain at that point
But RIP
But its a good thing to see f1 cars being so safe now
iirc a piece of the suspension column punctured Senna’s helmet and struck him above the right eye, which then led to his brain damage
one of the wishbones yes, as said above
I guessed I missed reading it

Alain Prost with an Acura Helmet Sponsor
“During the morning practice on Saturday, Prost spun backward into a wall and damaged the monocoque and gearbox. It was the first monocoque Prost had broken since joining the team in 1984. Prost then had to take Senna's spare car for the race.”
damn
it probably took de Cesaris 2 races at McLaren to crack a chassis
Unless Ayrton help him to race for not lose points in title fight
But the relationship between the two began to fail after the Imola and becomes worse in France (Where Alain announces he will exit for the McLaren for 1990)
he won the race btw
After Ayrton got DNF with the Honda engine
Hahahaha
he had an electronic failure there

and it’s why john didn’t drive it
RIP Jo Schlesser and John Surtees
ickx put his laurel crown where schlesser died
That’s very touching.
Doesn’t magnesium catch on fire easier?
Didn’t they know this though??
Yes.
Why would they use it then
Yeah
Triangle
First career win in Monaco must feel amazing
Did you know that during the Hungarian Grand Prix in 1991, Senna had two hard tyres on the left side and two softs on his right, which would be impossible to execute nowadays.
And won the race…
an underrated driver, the first out of two drivers who won the world championship without starting in pole position, the other being lauda in 1984
also a tragic day in f1 with the death of Lorenzo Bandini r.i.p
A lot of people think that the Williams FW14B was the car that introduced Active Suspension. But it was actually the Lotus Type 92 that first used Active Suspension, I believe
Although it wasn't as effective like with the Williams version because of, you know, early days of the tech
First the 92
Then the 99T at Monaco
Ayrton Senna was first driver who won a Grand Prix with an actively suspended car in 1987: Lotus 99T. How it worked?
Computer monitored 87 parameters and made 100 million calculations each 2.5-mile lap of Grand Prix in Detroit, USA. Pitot tubes measured the air pressure, ECU then stiffened the suspension as the pressure decreased with higher sp...

Pryce had podiums?
I didn't know tbh
He wasn’t that good. He only held two laps in 1st for the whole of his career
well i mean Shadow didn't had a good car
but he was a man he didn't wanted to be famous or something, and because of that he refused to sign with Lotus in 1975
to be fair Lotus was also pretty mediocre in 1975
they were still using the heavily outdated Lotus 72
76 brazil as well
Pryce was one place out of the points for most of his career
but when he wasnt he was always running really high
And he was the only Welsh man in f1 I believe
it was, but it apparently was a multi year contract, and Lotus in 1976-1978 were good

The passing of the Brazillian torch
It may had been a shortly lived backmarker but man did it looked decently good. It also sounded pretty good thanks to its, albeit heavy and unreliable, Lambo V12
When Ayrton had a BMW powered F1 car in his hands. Albeit it was during testing
Imagine what could have been if Senna moved to Brabham instead of Toleman
he would have been stuck in an unreliable team for long
Well that’s true, BMW engines are always powerful but unreliable
in 1984 Piquet scored 9 poles but didn’t score a point for the first 7 races or so
it was pole -> dnf
the most powerful engine at F1 ever is BMW’s
They had like 1350+hp
But I think they weren’t reliable at all
that was in qualifying trim ye
the engine would do 32,000 revs
and blow up.
soo one slow lap, one bonkers lap, and then it might blow up in the cooldown lap
Ol’ days
32?
i think i read 32 or 35k revolutions total before 💥
Ohhh not per minute
no 😄
We should wait a few decades to reach that limit
That's like... Electric Motor territory only
I doubt there's much point going up there
probably not, we’ve reached 20 odd k rpm at the end of the V10 NA era iirc, not a lot of margin to be gained with engines we don’t even want anymore

gunnar nilsson - 1977 belgian gp
gone too early..
1978 was a horrible year for Swedish motorsport
RIP Mark Donohue
Rip Ronnie Peterson
Why was it so bad? Detailed pls 🙂
The 2 best swedish drivers of the moment and the only 2 on F1 (Gunnar Nilsson and Ronnie Peterson) died that year
Ronnie had a crash on the Italian GP held at Monza
And Gunnar died a few months later due to cancer
dang
yup either pilots or war mechanics/engineers
more like a classic 70s/80s race
such a tragedy what happened to him
Damn
How good COULD they have been then
well Nilsson already had a win and 3 podiums in only 2 seasons but originally left Lotus for Ensign until his terminal cancer diagnosis
Ronnie Peterson was probably the fastest or 2nd fastest driver in his time always taking a lot of the pole positions
and he was the runner-up in the championship to Andretti in 1978 even when he died before the season ended
but he was the #2 driver so he had no chance to win the title that year anyway
Interesting, so very strong contenders
as he had to give way to Andretti in races
he and Fittipaldi also had a rivalry in 1973 that cost both the drivers and Lotus of the championship
This was Ronnie sewing up one of his tracksuits a few hours before his fatal accident
but keep in mind Ronnie was using a yellow racing suit in the race
heres a photo of Nilsson and Peterson just months before their deaths
Is there a clip of his crash?
theres a lot
