With two races remaining in the 2032 season, and following the announcement after the Mexico City Grand Prix that the now 7-time World Driver’s Champion DP will be departing the sport at the end of the season, Sunburst's Driver Affairs team, which deals with contract negotiations as well as internal relations between the drivers, and by extension relations between the drivers and their engineers, have conferred regarding their options for replacement.

The task to replace a 101-time race winner who has won the last seven consecutive World Championships is certainly no easy one, as even team principal Fred Sommer has admitted on multiple occasions, however the decision has been reached, perhaps surprisingly soon.

A statement released by the team outlines the decision process, citing "incredible results during substitutional appearances in the 2031 season, along with exemplary contributions to the team as lead reserve driver in the last two seasons" as the primary reasons for selecting the 23-year-old over other drivers in their academy, and over other talents within the driver market outside of their own academy to fill the seat.

The statement continues, "We are thrilled to provide Veikko with a driving seat at the Sunburst team for 2033 and onwards, and from what we have seen, we know he has the talent to attain similar achievements that DP has done for us, if not even exceed. We know the season is not over yet, however this is also the perfect time to thank DP for his own achievements and contributions in the nine years he has driven for us.
