Veikko Virtanen will return to Formula 2 beginning with the next round at the Nürburgring, having taken two rounds away to fulfil stand-in duties for the 5 time World Champion DP at Sunburst's F1 team.

The 22 year old has now made three starts for the Sunburst team, and has seen great success. He currently still leads the Formula 2 championship with 247 points, despite all of the races he has contested for Formula 1 clashing with races in F2.

Further, as a result of his Formula 1 success, with a second place in Monaco and wins in the Netherlands and Italy, he is now in seventh place in the Formula 1 standings, allowing him to return to the championship he was likely expecting to spend all season contesting with his head held high.

[Q1 and Q2 analysis]

Q3 begun with all drivers taking to the track on the wet compound, as rain was bucketing down. The 5 time champion DP on his return to the team from injury ahead of the Netherlands was the last driver to set a time, but fastest on the timing page by 1.7 seconds in the quiet middle stage.

However, a turn of conditions saw the intermediate compound win out as the better set to be on, but strangely there was no sign of the provisional polesitter on track in the late stages.
