REPORT: Virtanen fends off challenges from Vesti and Norris to seal victory in Mexico City

Starting from 7th, Virtanen immediately stormed forward, getting into 3rd in the eaely stages of the opening lap and launching attacks on Doohan and Vesti to lead by the end of lap 2.

Vesti managed to pass a compromised Doohan on lap 4 after a failed attempt for the lead, and launched multiple subsequent attempts of his own to dethrone the Finn in the remainder of the first stint.

The pit shuffle saw great gains for drivers like Leclerc, who had not originally jumped Vesti in the pit sequence, but had subsequently passed him on track in the later stages of the sequence on lap 10, and Enzo Fittipaldi, who after starting 11th, ended up in 6th by the time the McLarens came in.

Most of the grid started on soft tyres and so had pitted by lap 8, however the sequence extended to lap 12 for the five medium starters of Tsunoda and Zhou who pitted on lap 9 to conform to the expected alternative strategy, Boschung who pitted on lap 10 for the hard tyre as well, and the McLarens of Verstappen and Norris who extended so long that they could deviate from the expected alternative, and onto soft tyres in the late stages.

However, Lando Norris' challenge on the softs was thwarted on lap 16 after an audacious attempt to pass through the esses in the middle sector that ended in wing damage and an unscheduled pit stop for Norris, which left him in 17th, and out of the chance to challenge for victory.

This allowed Veikko Virtanen to coast to victory by 4.6 seconds from Charles Leclerc and Frederik Vesti.
