Capcom tried to prevent modding in Monster Hunter World and Rise with some really disgusting read checks that happened a thousand times a second, artificially slowing the game by over 30%

modders completely broke their "anti-tamper" within a month

then Crapcom did it again for MH World's Iceborne expansion, modders again broke it within a few days

The way Paradox Interactive does mod support is pretty fuckin good. Stellaris for example; mods that modify gameplay files will change the game's checksum, preventing you from playing mutliplayer unless others had the same checksum. This meant you could have intensely modded singleplayer games but then make a different mod profile that had only UI and graphics mods and play with vanilla players in multiplayer

This is mod support done right

I know in Team Fortress 2, you can mod your game pretty extensively but still play in Valve's official casual servers, but there were more restrictions if you went to play official competitive matchmaking, and those modded files would just not load instead of telling you you can't play at all. This is also a decent implementation, I just wish they had a functional anti-cheat in any of their games, especially TF2 and CSGO
