Herta could’ve just gone to Cadillac’s WEC program instead

He’d have a much stronger chance at getting those SL points given he has experience in sports cars and that Cadillac are a strong outfit

There are many, many ways Herta could've gotten the SL points which would make way more sense

WEC, winter series, free practice sessions, even another indycar season wouldn't be totally useless (he and andretti really should be good enough to at least finish high enough to pick up an extra 4 SL points)

Towriss said they considered going the free practice route which would have allowed him to do another Indycar season at the same time

But Herta said no because the Indycar schedule is already busy enough so trying to fit in like 6 FPs into that as well would have been a struggle

And staying out of Indycar for a year to do basically no driving other than 6 FPs is not a great idea either tbh because it is not a whole lot of driving

So he needed a full-season programme

Alternatively how about a single race playoff tournament? The top 32 drivers enter the race (Regardless of charter, although chartered drivers that didn't make the cut can enter as alternates). The race runs for 500 miles/200 laps, divided into four heats, with the bottom half of the grid eliminated after each heat. The final four race to decide the champion in the final heat.
