Then lemme tell you the tale of Shane van Gisbergen, a guy whoā€™s won in every single category there is that contains 4 wheels.

GT cars? No problem.
Sprint cars? Sure thing.
Rally cars? Yeah, that too.
Open wheelers, what do you think?
Drifting? Yuh huh.

As for his main discipline, heā€™s a 3x Supercar champion. 2 years ago he went to NASCAR to try out their first ever street race and won. On DEBUT. That speaks volumes in a series highly competitive. Now heā€™s in the Cup Series full time and is well on his way to becoming the best road course racer in the sportā€™s history. Could you really say that a guy like Kevin Magnussen is better than him?

I could go on and on about his skill, but the main reason I bring him up is to say that you donā€™t NEED to be in Formula One to be one of the best all-around racing drivers of all time. You just need to master the disciplines you have better than anyone else, and make sure those disciplines youā€™re tackling are some of the most skillful in the world.

You need to do Formula One. Sorry not sorry. Formula One is by far the most challenging motorsport to not only succeed at but to even break into. The driver standards are by a country mile the highest of any series. And every driver chases it. Not only for the global appeal but for the fact it pays significantly more than every motorsport on the planet. This guy probably wouldnā€™t even make the grid.

Then what about the drivers who have done Formula One and went to other disciplines, only to be beaten out by the already accustomed greats? Take guys like Marcus Ericsson, Juan Pablo Montoya and Antonio Giovinazzi for example. None of them are bad by any means, but if being in Formula One really means you can survive anything, the expectation should be constant P1s. (Iā€™m aware Giovinazzi is going well in WEC now, but even he needed a little bit of warming up in one of the best teams. And his Formula E tenure wasnā€™t so great.)

Also, Formula One, first and foremost, is a Motorsport. And Motorsport has become less talent-focused over the years when signing new drivers. Thereā€™s been a lot of drivers who HAVE been talented enough for Formula One, and didnā€™t get there because of other logistical reasons that werenā€™t directly related to how skilled they were

But seriously though, altho I think Malukas will get a few oval wins with Penske and probably be a safe bet for a season top-10 finish, I don't think he's an upgrade and penske are near enough the only team who doesn't really need a financially-beneficial driver besides maybe Andretti

Foyt aren't the best on strategy or pit lane tbf but with the penske partnership I get the impression he was practically running a penske setup most of 2025 which doesn't leave the best review for his race pace on roads + streets (not terrible but he tended to qualify well and then drop back somewhat)
