Because IndyCar drivers are given the choice to do just road circuits, just ovals, or just the Indy 500, depending on the deal they sign.

Most rookies choose not to do ovals at all in the first year. I think Grosjean chose not to do ovals in his first year in IndyCar.

Quite simply, ovals are a whole different discipline and quite dangerous in open wheel cars.

Most who come from F2 usually need some convincing, unless you’re Fernando Alonso, Juan Pablo Montoya, or Takuma Sato.

One only needs to look at Scott Dixon’s crash in 2017 to see why.

The most recent death at an oval was in 2015 at Pocono, a triangular oval.
