IMSA and Michelin wants teams to operate within a certain set of tire pressures and cambers and if you violate that or try to manipulate that data you get penalized.

If I recall correctly, stage racing was implemented as artificial cautions to artificially bunch up the field.

It has the added benefit of being able to air commercials at a dedicated point like it's the halftime in a soccer game.

First implemented around 2015-2016 ish because passing in Nascar was super awful then

On the Almirola penalty, NASCAR says it looked at several angles of video replay and saw the lug nut come off the car, then the wheel and tire. In NASCaR’s determination, that is an improperly installed wheel and a penalty.
