So now there's two IndyCars
The IRL, and CART
IRL became very oval focused, it had a deal with NASCAR where it would race on NASCAR ovals and people who bought a NASCAR ticket would also get a ticket for the IRL race, and vice verse
Meanwhile, CART, who lost the Indy 500 to the IRL, became far more focused on street circuits and road courses, kinda becoming "American F1" in a way

Over time IRL got the upper hand, and the series merged together in 2007 to form IndyCar
