@timber hatch i also, have played need for speed : most wanted
mine was a 92 cabrio, way different than a GTR but what a great ride
I'm gonna take a wild guess and say Riverside?
that's def riverside. I've been there.
Ah yes the amazing Superbird
@timber hatch i also, have played need for speed : most wanted
@rustic helm I have seen that car in real life
I think this car is genuinely my favourite Williams
that's still #formula-1 territory and not #pitstop ;)
nice model tho, i love the airbox shape of these 2002-2003 cars
150
I have a little senna model
It’s quite nice, i got it on discount before the senna shop closed down
@buoyant nebula usd
@worthy flicker The red car looks like a Porsche 917/30
so what defines classic... 25 years?
“Anything motorsport before 2000”
sounds like radwood
Ye we've decided classic = 20y or more. Like the collectible status for a car (at least here in France)

@timber hatch pretty cool but is that a classic car? [pre-2000]
yes
mitsubishi lancer
the rally one
The Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact car produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi since 1973. The Lancer has been marketed as the Colt Lancer, Dodge Colt, Plymouth Colt, Chrysler Valiant Lancer, Chrysler Lancer, Eagle Summit, Hindustan Lancer, Soueast Lioncel, and Mitsubishi Mirage in various countries at different times, and has been sold as the Mitsubishi Galant Fortis in Japan since 2007. It has also been sold as Mitsubishi Lancer Fortis in Taiwan with a different facelift than the Galant Fortis. In Japan, it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.
i think its the 2000 model
tommi

i cant watch 5 hours of tv
i cant be on screen for 10 hours lmao
yesterday i think i did 5 hours 3d
Secks
@spring finch Very
Lookin like a picture from the 50s
not really
it's way too sharp for the 50s
^^
film grain is a real thing
also it's so weird to think that a year from that picture, Senna had left McLaren, Williams started to have Rothmans as their title sponsor (defining their race suits as well) and Benetton likewise started to have Mild Seven as their title sponsor (who also defined their race suits)
meanwhile McLaren stayed with Marlboro (Philip Morris) for 3 more years until they went behind their backs and signed up a deal with Ferrari for the long term future
Marlboro livery wasn’t unique
it was iconic
Some Indycars looked the same and I think Alfa had it too at some point
i prefer the 06/07-13 liveries of McLaren over the dull west mclaren mercedes silver arrows thing they had going on
literally all they needed to do was allow daimler to take over operations like they wanted
2014 livery was sexy
i always think of the marlboro livery as when mclaren was at its best
the new orange look they are going for might grow on me if they start to rack up wins and then championships
Marlboro liveries were in almost every open wheel racing series
Penske had marlboro indy cars even late into the 00s I think
now I check it was up to 2010
yes

nice - we were still in Riverside in '70 so odds are my dad went to that race when it made it's way down south. i wonder if i have any pics...
guys the 1987 car had a stick shifter on the left ,right ?
Idk if it was on the right for every car, as in the 60s some cars had it on the left, some on the right
but generally I guess it'd be on the right
k
A car being driven at Brooklands Circuit in the mid 1920s
lmao
If that track still exists we need to get modern Indy car to take some laps
Damn
this is a photo from a race in 1928
Brooklands is the birthplace of modern motorsport
It was the first purpose built track in the world
Hosted the first ever 24h race
it seems to be a plane museum nowadays
it is
it became the biggest warplane manufacturer in england
that was what it was used for in wwi
there is only a small bit left
fun to race it on GPL
and rfactor/automobilista in 30s cars
I slipped over trying to climb the banking there as a kid
also they had a sim rig there in like a mclaren west frankencar
U could do laps of the track in a napier railton or a modern f1
Think that's the car airborne in the earlier pic
What a beauty
are you sure about brooklands being the start?
here's another bit of history from my birth town
you can see the street on that map
its the first purpose built circuit that was literally just that - a circuit
as opposed to a road race
absolutely wasnt the start of racing itself but i guess riley is saying that as it was purely built for racing, eventually leading to permanent circuits
yep i get that
That brabham doesn’t look like a race winning car to me
yet it won the title
which one is the Brabham?
random discovery i found regarding Toleman being taken over by Benetton
in 85 Benetton had major stake in Toleman and they had some solid ish races but nothing too spectacular. But when Fabi got a pole in Nurbergring this sealed the deal for Benetton to take over the team for 86 and after a few changes it is now today's Reno
still no clue how he managed to get this pole out of nowhere

Its crazy seeing these old photos
The complete disregard for safety
Then again, this was normal for the time
This is the face of a guy ready to kick ass
Hell they didnt even have seatbelts then
"remember when tires were skinny and drivers were fat"
lmao
i can't take credit for that
but it's so true
the pics of hotrods from my dad's era (!)
I remember someone saying that they didnt use seatbelts because it was better to “fly into a tree as opposed to be trapped by the belts and burn to death”
chilling stuff
yeah, and that was also a reality. fire.
driver's sat inside hollowed out fuel tanks!
oh yeah
haha no those are Boranni alloy laced wheels and they're ultra valuable
they were practically the sole racing wheel supplier in italy for years
i love mid 60s thru late 80s
that looks like jim clark

It joke
Hey DC @therealdcf1 . You put me under pressure. You were a very fine driver. If you had stayed with Williams 1996, it could have been you. I have to admit I'm glad you didn't! C'est la F1. I do love this lap though. And the V10 Yeah baby! #f1 #Adelaide https://t.co/WjijLRdKr...

@spring finch I love how they "didn't advertise tobacco" on the sidepods
@calm field you mean the playlife logo?
pretty sure Playlife was the name of the Mecachrome engines used by them
yes
and nothing to do with Mild Seven
Playlife is a clothing line Benetton was pushing forwards iirc
hm?
a subbrand?
anyway playlife was displayed upside down on the side of the car
yep, and horizontally flipped
with mild seven on the engine cover
Playlife is their leisure brand apparently
oh, i thought that was a cig brand
Playlife is a fashion company based in Treviso, Italy. The company is owned by the Benetton family and is the sporting label of the clothes manufacturer.

The March 711. One of the weirdest looking cars in f1 history due to it's high front wing. It was quite quick though.
i wouldn't say the height of it is the most weird aspect of it
Yeah the shape too I guess
Looks a bit like a surfboard
That’s my by ronnie in the march
He was runner up in that ugly duckling in his second season in f1
Hate to be that jackass but those pics are from after 2000

Senna but it's a documentary more than a movie
what f1 film (apart from rush, already watched it) is worth checking out?
@opaque socket Grand Prix is a good one. It moves away from F1 using fake drivers as main characters but 1960s drivers are in the film. It does use real footage from f1 races, which for its time was a huge achievement and won 3 academy awards
grand prix 1966 the only good f1 film i can think of other than rush
watch the 1971 Le Mans film with steve mcqueen
Life on the Limit (sometimes called ‘1’) is a pretty cool documentary it has rare old footage

Prost > Senna
not your fault you can't handle it
Ragunathan > Prost > Senna
senna>schumacher
Senna v Schumi could've been a thing but 94 happened
Senna probably would have won 94 and 96 wcs before retiring
Don’t see anyone stopping him in a williams
It is the truth
You're just not open minded enough to accept it
I am open minded enough to be capable of accepting but I don't think this is the truth
Everybody can have their opinion can't they?

i remember that day
i have this hanging in my home in memory
Woahhh that looks amazing
I love the look of the 90s F1 cars
it's a legit ticket advert for the actual race. i bought it at a local auction that had all sorts of mobilia
it's a super nice frame. i got it for a deal because not many people understand the significance
i had to have it
My dad’s got a nice MS autograph
He met him somewhere (trackside I’d assume) and wanted him to sign the picture of MS that he brought with him, but he forgot to bring the marker with him and brought only a pen and a diary. Since he cannot pass up MS’s autograph he tore a page out from his diary and asked MS to sign it

All I remember is that is was at riverside speedway
Can’t get more classic than this
definitely an indycar (or CART or AAA or whatever)

autodrome de linas-montlhéry 1995

monte carlo 1965
interlagos 1973
Old interlagos was an insane track
everytime i see this old layout i struggle to understand it
i would like to drive it
you know what it looks like
kinda like a kart track
like they were just trying to fit as much track as physically possible in as small a space as possible
well, they were trying to fit a track around lakes
inbetween them?
interlagos intestines
Precisely, one still remains nowadays so you can see it on google maps, while the other has been dried and is now a parking lot it seems. Both are/were artificial
it looks like a rally stage
well yes the historic track name is literally 'between lakes'
Classic
There are games where you can drive it
yea
Audi had not originally planned to participate in the African marathon events, but now found it necessary to enter the penultimate round, the Rallye Côte d’Ivoire, due to their title battles with Opel. Just before the start of the event, Mouton received news that her father had succumbed to cancer in his house in Nice. His last wish was that Mouton start the rally.
she was absolutely rapid in that rally but ended up with a dnf
ye
right it says she retired because of an accident but doesn't say when it happened
On the final day, she continued to suffer from mechanical problems and had the complete fuel injection system changed. For the next time control, Röhrl and Mouton arrived almost simultaneously. With only 600 km to go, Mouton went off the road and rolled her car. She drove the severely damaged quattro for five more kilometers before ultimately giving up. Röhrl inherited the win and became the first two-time world champion in the WRC. Having lost her father, Mouton did not dwell on losing the title

My man ronnie
I wonder how much longer he could have raced if monza 78 didn’t happen
not a lot more i reckon. he was to go to McLaren for 1979 and their car was crap. Maybe he joins Williams for 1980 though, instead of Reutemann
HYPE
ahhhhhhh
three wheelin' it! my car lifts the inside rear when hard cornering
i appreciate the simplicity of older vehicles
yes there is too much automation these days
oh yes. i personally would like to see greater safety, but simpler cars
manual transmissions, no assists
does manuals really make the cars simpler?
yes because paddle shifter transmissions are powered by solenoids etc
electronics
vs a clutch hydraulic line and a linkage
true. but the thing to make semi automatic didn't seem very complex to me, when listening to John Barnard who made the first of these in the 1989 Ferrari 640
you mean like a sequential manual?
no with paddle shifters
like in a shifter kart? no clutch?
no clutch ya
in a shifter kart, there's a butterfly behind the steering wheel and you just mash thru the gears without a clutch as if you were on a motorcycle
good luck if you spin tho
what happens if you spin
the engine stalls
even if you're a badass and can manage to find neutral during the spin, you can't get back into 1st without a push
yep
oh that is stunning
yummmmmmM1

Description says “anything motorsport before 2000”
oh sorry, didn't see it
It’s fine xd
strange view , but this is Senna testing a Indycar back in 1992, this was Emerson Fittipaldi's car , and what is said , is that Senna was faster than him on that day, not sure about it , but given Senna's talent i definitely think it is possible.
Interesting
that looks like laguna seca
that IndyCar sure looks ahead of its time
here's what a then Penske engineer had to say about that day
Penske engineer recalls the day Ayrton Senna drove an Indy Car on Auto123.com
reminder that in 92, Emerson was like 45 or so. He has won his first title in F1 in 1972
Mario Andretti was 54 when he did his last race in IndyCar 1994
ye Mario is from 1940 and Emerson from 1946
i often joke about when the ferrari seat is open they should call mario because of the amount of times he was considered for replacing injured drivers during the 80s when he was in his mid 40s
for tambay twice in 1984 and 1986 respectively
he subbed in '82 LBGP as well I was there
it was a huge deal
twice in 1982
Carlos Reutemann quitting because of politics
didn't help the team that employing him was british
and then mario replaced the severly injured pironi
stuck it on pole at the home of ferrari and came 3rd
iirc he was driving the TAG at lbgp
williams
yeah there's a full writeup on the why on wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982_United_States_Grand_Prix_West
more of a name tag mind the pun if anything
damnn i wish i was around at the time
such a bummer gilles losing his podium
he was my hero... he was dead just weeks later, too
one month and 4 days
i was devastated
a great shame to f1
1982 sucked
which is a shame because it is one of the closest seasons ever
i have a pic of me next to his car RIGHT after the race when it was being towed back to the garage
no it was still on race slicks
your first pic indicates otherwise
oh it's another set of wheels
yeah the bicycle wheels they use are super cool though!
i remember my sis saying her Golf handled better when it was fitted with thinner wheels. My uncle had put larger ones with nice rims
ye i guess. can't do it any longer
not without some major credentials
the 82 cars were wild
so delicate so handbuilt
pop riveted tubs and wings
aluminum everywhere
simply beautiful compared to composites
front suspensions at the middle of your legs
the MP4/1B must have looked super elegant as well
i have some closeups of a williams from that era with the bodywork off
despite having a cfc monocoque
oui
shame we have lost ron someone who had built up mclaren to the point it was at before it started to go downhill
well, the fact it went downhill proved change was needed
yeah likely
he should have led this change instead of going back to leading the team
his mistake was going off to make a car brand
i think there is also no doubt that there was some poor leadership within mclaren byt whitmarsh
why is the McLaren automotive division a mistake
as succesful as that is what followed was a complete loss of focus onto its f1 project
yes, Whitmarsh is my point
well, look at where it led them
and look at where it led another team that didn't do this diversification and focused on F1 solely: Williams
who's the more successful outfit of the 2
i do also wonder how things changed with mercedes when daimler had sold its shares to focus on its own project
williams relied too much on the past and missed opps with bmw
it's a problem caused by Whitmarsh
it took them to a downward spiral of engine partners who also didn't last
cosworth
toyota
cosworth
renault
and then the short term fix with mercedes
they didn't rely too much on the past, they just couldn't change their direction structure, and when BMW left they had no money remaining. and figured th ey relied on the BMW strength too much and produced poor chassis in the meantime. That's why they haven't won any title in the 2000s while they should have
of course
but it was their pride about their history that prevented them being picked up by bmw
McLaren could afford the loss of Mercedes thanks to their car division, that's going stronger by the year
the stubborn attitude they had with bmw was what cost them
Williams could never make big benefits from the Advanced Tech division
you even had two drivers on two sides at the team
jpm the williams guy
ralf the bmw guy
no it's not their history, they couldn't change their organisation while Newey was with them, and he was a big part of their success in the 90s. Just two aging dudes who couldn't adapt, but not necessarily living in the past
i rather think their view on how they wanted to run the team was based off their past
it is a great shame
hopefully they can get back on track
hmm ye that's true
williams have a lot of moments of chaos between the years though i think about though
1981 with carlos and jones
and 1986 with piquet and mansell
i'm suprised they got so much success with the amount of things going wrong
mid 79-81 they had the best chassis and strongest pairings.
86-87 same
and in the latter they also had a more advanced engine compared to the Porsche and Ferrari
Yeah
Lauda be looking like Santa with those shoes
Classic cars are the absolute best. Not many rules or limitations they just went all out.

@ivory mason that’s what SENNA is my dude
and we all know how the story ends 😦
ill never forget that day
brasillians loved him not only for his racing but him as a human being
i worked in a TV shop the owner would record the race on VHS and the fire it up on ALL the TVs every sunday. It was like church
we just stopped. silent. pulled the tape out and put it on a shelf.
this is why i have an actual poster for the race on my wall

A rare onboard lap from Niki Lauda's Ferrari on Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (or populary known as Mosport Park) in 1976.
Excerpt taken from "The Mythmakers" documentary, narrated by William Shatner.
Really shows you how unsafe these cars were
Look at those thin tyres
And yet he finds a way to be smooth anyways
It’s only unsafe if you crash am i right?
hmmm
Hehehehohoho
i don't see why these tyres make the cars unsafe
Thin af
means slower speeds though
less grip = lower speeds so yes
but i would say the speeds that the cars were achieving would still be enough to cause a fatality
poor facilites at the track and the cars breaking up so easily contributing to that

The last of the V10 engines used in F1. They were only team using them in 2006 as part of a loophole regulations which allowed them to use them rather than the new high-revving V8 engines. The engine could only reach about 16,500 rpm, but still a great sound. Enjoy!
