Shutting down your pc dosent shut it down completely for some reason but instead puts your pc into a kind of sleep mode, this causes software and those types of things to shut down but leaves I think what was in the ram to your drive so it can have a faster boot by having the drive temporality keep ram memory on it then moving it to ram on boot
