2042's animations aren't that special either by today's standards, especially Portal's weapons. Someone thought that it would be a good idea to make a hybrid of animations from the original game and modern tactical animations, creating a collection of inconsistent ones.

Don't think so. It's reused assets though so they got a huge boost in speeding the development process up. It's probably why they even went with El Alamein, it's a very easy map to make.

That maps layout is pretty much all natural terrain so height maps do a lot of the work for them.
