There are a lot of examples of "dead" games that have a sizable playerbase that the developers/publishers monetize enough to continue milking. Fallout 76 is a great example of this and I am a sucker who pre-ordered that game because Im a boomer who is a sucker for fallout.

In my research I've found the industry monetized the shortcut of dopamine and thus created a system where players get mad faster at games for not being rewarding.
