Competitive is look at the map to discern the flow of enemies based off of flag spawns, and predict where they will go, take an offensive off angle to cut their push off, or find a defensive position on the objective to hold it, or flank around and get behind the objective to begin capturing

If the decision to faction lock gear is because of specialist skins, it would make sense to me that weapons can be unlocked in tdm and ffa, because they are exclusive modes to portal. So on average only 1/4 matches would have specialists since there are 4 games included in portal

If the jet had sufficient air to ground capabilities, you can completely wipe out a defensive force on an objective, allowing your team to push in, and then there is the fact you can take out vehicles too

Give people the option of various different jets. Don't restrict it to one specific jet for everyone.
