Cant give relevant info for 2042 honestly as designating was not working for beta. In bf4 which is closest analogy to 2042, designating had an extremely long range for certain gadgets, roughly 1000m. Lock on weapons are susceptible to pilots/drivers who are good at using terrain to their advantage. Laser designating provides a different trajectory to lock on weapons. They travel much higher before locking to target as they do top down damage, which is the most high dage angle of impact when facing vehicles. Tl;dr they greatly improve the lethality of lock on weapons, air and land

to comment on the “maps are too big” I’d say reserve your judgement for once the player base has a good feel for the layouts of each map, not to mention all the game modes,etc that can change that. I actually like points such as between C/D on Orbital which give me that caspian vibe they were going for, and I did have some combat in the hills above. “Lulls” in combat are somewhat required
