That is not the core game, that is a mode which has content from past games, with the tools to make your own game modes within it. The original content made for 2042, the newest stuff, is what BF2042 is. And BF2042 is lacking a core component that is present in every other game within the series; it hasn't been altered, it is not present. That is what I am criticising BF2042, not the secondary mode they included so people could play older BF games.

But even ignoring that classes are a core part of BFs identity, there's also the issues that specialists bring themselves, a common one being teamplay. The teamplay problem is the fact that people will play whatever they want realistically. Thus, selfish people that don't care about the team will pick the most self-beneficial setup. However, the class system heavily negated this because each class has its set of weapons which are all effective in different scenarios than each other, and gadgets that are restricted to each of them, which are orientated around teamplay. With 2 options, most people picked one personal offensive tool and one team orientated tool, but in some cases (like most Assaults in BF4) people took 2 team items. Because the class system made it so the selection of kit was restricted to each class's role, the classes fulfilled that role, regardless of who played them. So, even if the most selfish, kill hungry mo'fucka played, he would still have some form of team orientated kit on because it'd also help himself. Thus the "I'm here so I might as well help" was born.
