While experimentation is fine. completely redesigning core components of a game that have been there since inception, without much reason bar experimenting, is not the best plan. Luckily, they have the Portal, so they are fine to a degree, as they have provided a mode to enjoy what people have come to expect. For any game, the end goal is to make the most liked and successful product, as these go hand in hand. So if something does work, and work EXTREMELY well, seeing it replaced is jarring and quite baffling to most, from both perspectives. Experimentation seems to work best by being introduced slowly. Having it within a secondary, but fore fronted, mode should be the best bet, as this allows the expected and successful methods to be present and the default, but, still allowing the newer things a place to show their wings and be given a chance.

They do need to be balanced a lot more, and a lot finer, than classes however. If something is broken on a class, you can just nerf it. If you over do it, it has far more tools to use instead of it for the class. But specialists ARE their gadgets, so if it's broken, you may nerf a whole specialist into the floor, because the other will be more useful, which effectively invalidates the purpose of specialists in first place, variety.
